Raiders produce second half blitz to down Dolphins

Canberra have again toppled the Dolphins, roaring home in the second half to secure a 40-28 win in their Sunday afternoon NRL clash. The past two battles between the teams had been decided in golden point - both in the Raiders' favour - but in their first meeting at GIO Stadium the green machine came up with the goods in emphatic style. Kristian Woolf's visitors looked in great shape at halftime with a 28-10 lead, appearing on track to set a new club benchmark of four successive wins. Instead it was the Raiders who snared their fourth straight, rolling past their rivals in scoring the last five tries unanswered to cement the victory. Canberrra's winger Savelio Tamale opened the scoring but the Dolphins hit back with two almost identical tries through Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow and Herbie Farnworth, picking holes in the Raiders' right edge. The Queensland side kept piling on the points with another three first half tries with Jake Averillo scoring his team's fifth in the 39th minute to leave the large crowd shell-shocked. But the second half told a different story, with the Raiders building their way back into the match while holding the Dolphins scoreless. A converted try scored by English second-rower Matty Nicholson locked up the scoreline at 28-28 and the signs looked ominous for the Dolphins as errors continued to take their toll. The home side hit the front in the 71st minute when Jamayne Isaako fumbled a grubber and Sebastian Kris pounced to score Halfback Jamal Fogarty, reportedly lured from Canberrra to Manly for the next season, iced the win after throwing a huge dummy and gliding through for the Raiders' last try.

Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf has given a glowing endorsement of controversial prop Frank Molo as the ex-Maroons enforcer prepares to put his messy Dragons divorce behind him. Molo will make his first appearance for the Dolphins in Sunday afternoon's clash with the Raiders in Canberra. It will be the former Broncos hit-man's first NRL game since last year following an off-season saga at St George Illawarra. Molo, 30, refused to report for pre-season training with the Dragons in the New Year, reportedly because he took offence to comments made by a Dragons staffer around his decision to abstain from alcohol. Molo says he has been sober for about two years after pleading guilty to a domestic violence offence relating to an incident in December, 2022, on the NSW South Coast. The father-of-three was handed an 18-month conditional release order in March, 2023, and two-match ban by the NRL. Late last year, Molo said giving up alcohol and embracing Catholicism saved his relationship and career. 'Two years ago I had a bit of a rough patch with my relationship,' he told the Against the Grain podcast. 'I was on the brink of losing my family and relationship because of the selfish things I was doing. 'I was drinking a fair bit and wasn't being a good partner. 'My partner was going to leave me with the kids. 'I hit rock bottom. I feel like I've hit rock bottom a few times, but this was pretty bad. 'I chose to give up the drink and have been sober ever since. It was the best thing for me.' Molo has had a turbulent career since making his NRL debut for Brisbane in 2014. He had six NRL games under his belt in 2015 before producing a banned shoulder charge in a reserve grade game that resulted in the death of Sunshine Coast player James Ackerman. The incident rocked the game, with Molo receiving an eight-match suspension and falling out of the NRL system until he returned with the North Queensland Cowboys in 2018. He made his Origin debut for Queensland in the 2021 series and became a mainstay of the Dragons' pack over the past three seasons before his bitter exit last month, with the Dolphins handing him a two-year contract. Woolf has held an association with Molo since his junior days and said the hard-hitting forward had turned his life around. 'He is a great story, Frank,' he said. 'He has been through so much in his life and has got every reason not to be sitting here as an NRL player or the man he is. 'He's made some really good choices in his life and changes. He's a great example and it's great to have him as part of our team. 'I've known him since he was 18. I was part of the Broncos when he debuted as a 19-year-old. 'He's always brought a real desire for the physical side of the game. He lets you know he's on the field because he wants to run hard and hit hard. 'He loves the physicality. That's what I like about him as a footballer. 'The changes he's made in his life, the man and father he's become and example he is … that's why I want him in the team.' After spending three weeks in the Hostplus Cup, Molo has been elevated following injuries to Dolphins forwards Felise Kaufusi (knee) and Max Plath (foot). The Raiders and Dolphins are both on three-game winning streaks and Woolf said his team faced a tough challenge in the nation's capital. 'The vibe is really good,' he said of Redcliffe's revival after four straight losses to start the season. 'We are training really well and have good confidence about us. They're nice and confident in their ability. 'This is another big challenge for us. We're going to play a top three team at their place. 'They're a tough side, playing well and coming off three wins in a row. They come at you for 80 minutes. 'We know we need to be prepared for them and it will be a real challenge.'

Dolphins secure first Woolf win against woeful Titans

The Dolphins have broken a four-game losing streak to give new coach Kristian Woolf a maiden win of the season in a 36-10 dismantling of a woeful Gold Coast. The Titans were favourites at home after two victories on the trot, but as so often the case they wilted at Robina where they were expected to win. Dolphins halves Kodi Nikorima and Isaiya Katoa turned in masterclass displays while fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow had his best game of the season. It's Hammer time! 🔨#NRLTitansDolphins — NRL (@NRL) April 5, 2025 Man-of-the-match Katoa's running game was phenomenal and he complemented that with astute passing and kicking. The NRL crackdown on high shots led to both teams losing key forwards in the first half. Titans captain Tino Fa'asuamaleaui was sin-binned in the second minute and put on report for a high shot on Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi. Dolphins hardman Ray Stone was also marched for a swinging arm that clocked centre Beau Fermor on the jaw in the 31st minute. It was the Dolphins who played with enterprise on the back of a powerhouse display by new recruit prop Daniel Saifiti. Winger Jamayne Isaako got the scoreboard ticking with a line break and slick pass to put fullback Tabuai-Fidow over for his first try of the year in the 10th minute. The Titans' attention to detail was abominable in the first half with Brian Kelly offside from a dropout, winger Tony Francis making a play-the-ball error and second-rower David Fifita giving away a silly penalty at marker. The visitors punished the errors. Marshall-King sent Saifiti crashing over for his first try to give the Dolphins a 16-0 lead at half-time. The Dolphins kept their foot on the throat after the break. Nikorima set tireless lock Max Plath up for a try with a pinpoint bomb and then handled twice for back-rower Connelly Lemuelu to score. The Titans only started to play with any flair when they trailed 28-0 and scored late consolation tries through Phil Sami and AJ Brimson. Des Hasler will be infuriated by his side's lack of discipline when the game was on the line, while Woolf seems to have found a successful formula for the Dolphins. The pack was dominant and they injected Tabuai-Fidow with impact. Winger Isaako had a fantastic night with 20 points from a try and eight from eight with the boot.
