Kristin Cavallari says ‘a weight has been lifted' after ‘cutting ties' with her father
Kristin Cavallari has opened up about her decision to no longer speak to her father. The former reality television star revealed in an interview with People published on Monday that choosing not to speak to her father, Dennis Cavallari, years ago turned out to be the 'best decision.' 'I mean, honestly, and this might sound messed up to some people, but it's the best decision I've ever made, cutting my dad out of my life. Such a weight has been lifted from me,' she told the publication. 'There's not one day where I miss him. I don't know if it was two or three years ago, but I mean, I was an adult, let's say I was 35 [when I decided]. It was 35 years of buildup to that point.' The Hills alum — who shares sons Camden, 12, Jaxon, 11, and daughter Saylor, 9, with her ex-husband, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler — said the rift between her and her father began when he 'crossed the boundary' with her children. Although she didn't provide any further information regarding what her father did to her children, she added that he 'couldn't even apologize' after. 'Like, you're just gaslighting me. I don't have time for that anymore,' she said, noting that she was 'happy' with her choice. 'If someone's not bringing you joy, if people are only bringing you hurt and sadness and anger, what is the point? Even if it's a parent, life's too short.' Cavallari has previously discussed growing up with a narcissistic father during an episode of her Let's Be Honest podcast in December 2023. At the time, she spoke with psychologist Dr. Sherrie Campbell about narcissism. Throughout their discussion, Cavallari admitted that because her father has had narcissistic tendencies, she has cut him out of her life and they are no longer on speaking terms. 'I cut my dad out of my life about two years ago, which has honestly been the best thing I've ever done,' she said. 'I actually didn't realize that my dad was a narcissist until I was an adult.' In the past, the Laguna Beach star has been candid about the strained relationship she shares with her father. She explained to Campbell that when she was younger, she didn't like being around him because he didn't make her feel like she was good enough. She continued: 'But then the flip of that is, sometimes he would put me on this pedestal and talk me up. Now as an adult looking back, it was when it benefited you and made you look good.'

Kristin Cavallari calls cutting father out of her life the 'best decision' ever made
Kristin Cavallari stands by her decision to distance herself from her father. In a recent interview with People, the 38-year-old reality TV star opened up about her decision to cut out her father from her life, calling it "the best decision I've ever made." "I mean, honestly, and this might sound messed up to some people, but it's the best decision I've ever made, cutting my dad out of my life. Such a weight has been lifted from me," she told the outlet. "There's not one day where I miss him. I don't know if it was two or three years ago, but I mean, I was an adult, let's say I was 35 [when I decided]. It was 35 years of buildup to that point." She went on to explain that it "was something that I had been wanting to do for a long time" and it wasn't until after he "crossed the boundary with my kids" and wouldn't apologize that she pulled the trigger. Cavallari shares three children with her ex-husband, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler, including sons Camden, 12, Jaxon, 11, and daughter Saylor, 9. "Like, you're just gaslighting me. I don't have time for that anymore," she continued. "If someone's not bringing you joy, if people are only bringing you hurt and sadness and anger, what is the point? Even if it's a parent, life's too short." The reality star first opened up about her decision to cut her dad out of her life in December 2023 during an appearance on her podcast, "Let's Be Honest," in which she spoke with psychologist Dr. Sherrie Campbell. "I mean, honestly, and this might sound messed up to some people, but it's the best decision I've ever made, cutting my dad out of my life. Such a weight has been lifted from me." During a discussion about narcissism, Cavallari shared that she never felt comfortable around her father, as he was constantly putting her down as a child and that she didn't realize he was a narcissist until she was an adult. "But then the flip side of that is, sometimes he would put me on this pedestal and talk me up," she said on her podcast. "Now, as an adult looking back, it was when it benefited you and made you look good." She further elaborated on what it was like growing up with her father on a December 2024 episode of Bunnie Xo's podcast, "Dumb Blonde," where she described the relationship as having "so many layers to it. It's so complicated…. It really is disgusting." Cavallari referred to her cutting contact with her father as "the last thing I needed to do in my healing journey," even comparing her marriage to Cutler to her relationship with her father, saying, "I was repeating a pattern with my dad." "I hadn't done the work on my relationship with my dad. That's what you do. I ended up marrying my dad," she said. "And so it really forced me to then to work through my s---, which is what I did. So when we got a divorce for the last five years, quite honestly, I've really taken the time to get my s--- together so that I don't then make the same mistake."

Kristin Cavallari Says She 'Hates' Seeing Headlines About Her Dating Life: 'I'm a Real Person' (Exclusive)
Kristin Cavallari is opening up about the constant media attention her dating life receives "The headlines love to just put me in this box that has to do with men and sex," she tells PEOPLE The reality star returns to TV on June 4 with the premiere of Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour on E! Kristin Cavallari isn't immune to the news cycle. The reality TV star, 38, first shot to fame when she was just 17 on MTV's Laguna Beach, and she's continued to receive media attention for the last two decades. Despite her experience in the spotlight, Cavallari — who is making her return to reality TV when Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour premieres on June 4 — tells PEOPLE that she actually "hates" reading stories about herself. "The headlines love to just put me in this box that has to do with men and sex. And I get it. I know it's a game. It's all about clickbait, but when it's about you? I'm a real person. It affects me. It does," she says in this week's issue. Cavallari is also the first to admit that she's been open about her dating life in the past, "probably too much so." Last year, Cavallari made headlines for her 13-year age gap relationship with Montana Boyz TikToker Mark Estes, and on Bunnie Xo's Dumb Blonde podcast in December, Cavallari said Morgan Wallen was "good in bed." Still, Cavallari wishes more people understood that she has "s— going on other than who I'm dating." "How about a headline about me running a really successful business or what a good mom I am? These are real things," she says. "But no, they would never write good headlines because they don't get as many clicks, I guess." Cavallari shares her three children — sons Camden, 12, Jaxon, 11, and daughter Saylor, 9 — with her ex-husband, former NFL quarterback Jay Cutler. She's also the founder of lifestyle and jewelry brand Uncommon James, which she launched in 2017, and hosts the popular podcast Let's Be Honest. "Those first couple of years, it was [my] passion and fire that made us successful in the beginning. And I always say to people, I didn't go to college, but I have drive. I'm hardworking. Those things can't be taught," she says. "And so, if you have those things, you're unstoppable. That's what they can't teach you in school, and I have those things." Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. When she's not busy working, Cavallari says she really is just focused on her kids. "I'm going to basketball practice and games like every other parent. I'm at school. I was on a field trip last Friday. I am doing all the normal mom things," she says. "And I think it's probably good for people to see because I think people's idea of me is very different than who I actually am." Honestly Cavallari: The Headline Tour will premiere Wednesday, June 4 at 10 p.m. ET with two back-to-back half-hour episodes on E!. Read the original article on People
