AFP in talks with US to use EDCA sites for PH relief efforts, says Teodoro

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is already coordinating with the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) to use the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) sites for relief efforts amid the heavy rainfall and floods across the country, Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro said Monday. 'Ako po'y kausap si General Brawner, sa ating Armed Forces of the Philippines, at iko-coordinate din po niya ang mga kinakailangan na tulong sa USINDOPACOM upang magamit ang EDCA facilities at iba't-iba pang mga kagamitan na kinakailangan na katulong ng ating Armed Forces of the Philippines upang makarsponde sa ating mga kababayan,' said Teodoro in a video statement. ('I am talking with General Romeo Brawner and the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and he is coordinating the assistance we need from USINDOPACOM so we could use the EDCA facilities and the equipment that the AFP needs to assist our countrymen.) Signed in 2014, EDCA grants US troops access to designated Philippine military facilities, the right to construct facilities, and pre-position equipment, aircraft and vessels, but rules out permanent basing. There are currently nine EDCA sites nationwide: Antonio Bautista Air Base (Palawan), Basa Air Base (Pampanga), Fort Magsaysay (Nueva Ecija), Mactan-Benito Ebuen Air Base (Cebu), Lumbia Air Base (Cagayan de Oro City), Naval Base Camilo Osias (Sta Ana, Cagayan), Lal-lo Airport (Lal-lo, Cagayan), Camp Melchor Dela Cruz (Gamu, Isabela), and in Balabac Island (Palawan). When the country was hit by Typhoon Kristine in October last year, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said EDCA sites should be maximized in the government's disaster response and relief efforts. The EDCA sites were eventually used in the government's disaster response efforts when a series of storms hit the country. Malacañang suspended classes and work in government offices in Metro Manila, Cavite, Rizal, Batangas, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, Bataan at 1 p.m. State weather bureau PAGASA said earlier in the day that the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat will continue to bring rains over the country. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News

Ireland's Next Top Model winner reveals the darker side of modelling competitions

'I've seen at first hand the cut throat world of a beauty some of it's not nice' Kristine was proud to represent Ireland in Egypt at the Top Model of the World pageant Having finished in the top five of the Top Model Of The World pageant, gorgeous Kristine Subrovska has not only made friends for life with fellow contestants but she's also seen up close what a cut-throat business it can be. Dubliner Kristine recently won Ireland's Next Top Model and she has graciously opened up her talents to give aspiring young women a shot at making it in the beauty world through her agency The Model Method. Kristine flew to Egypt to take part in the contest, which was won by Miss Colombia. 'I bonded quite well with the girls, who were super lovely,' she says. 'There was a white dress round, swimwear round and then a ballgown round. 'The girls were introduced beforehand, they give a bio on screen as you're on stage 'Of course, coming closer to the finals you could really feel the tension between the girls, it got more intense, because at the end of the day while we're all lovely and friendly we're all there for the same reason. 'There are other titles in it as well, you have Miss Social, Miss Reputable, Miss Photogenic.' Kristine was proud to represent Ireland in Egypt at the Top Model of the World pageant Today's News in 90 Seconds - July 19th But Kristine also got to see a darker side. 'On the day of the finals, we had a final rehearsal, there were dresses cut up, there were rumours going around of girls sleeping with judges to get a higher ranking, there was make-up all over bikinis. It just got really nasty closer to the time,' she reveals. Kristine, who was born in Latvia but grew up in Citywest, had the full support of her fiance in the competition. Ireland's Next Top Model is run by Michael Martin Byrne, who also owns the Merrion and Dawson Spas in Dublin, of which Kristine is co-owner. The Merrion branch sees a string of celebrities visiting, with Celebrity Big Brother winner Big Zhu and his fellow rapper cousin AJ Tracey popping in last weekend before they appeared at the Longitude festival. 'Michael has over a decade of experience in the field and has the right contacts to make this Ireland's leading pageant,' Kristine says. 'To take part you need to be confident, you need to have a certain aura around you. You don't necessarily need experience in modelling, but you do need to have confidence, that's one thing the judges need to look at. 'It's not just wearing the crown and saying, 'I'm the queen, I'm the winner' or whatever the case is, it's more than that', like you will be asked to go work with charities, you will be asked to work closely with your community.' Kristine Subrovska. 'Like my chosen one is children, and I'm meeting Ronald McDonald House again this week. We'd like to see the community also getting involved with it, if it's children, it's animals, it's homelessness — whatever the case you choose that and you work closely with them. You do something with the crown, it's not just getting free blowdries and free sponsorship deals and collaborations with brands. 'That's where we differ from other pageants or competitions, it's not just about who has the most lifestyle and Instagram posts, or who has the most followers, it's about what you can bring to the table as well.' Kristine was delighted to do so well. 'When they announced 'Ireland' and I made it into the top 20 I was stunned but delighted,' she smiles. She adds that mental health is very important to her, and she works with charities like Pieta House, having had experience of being manipulated during her career with other agencies. 'I was manipulated, gaslit, and pressured into legal bindings, and faced stalking, harassment, and exploitation disguised as opportunity,' she reveals. Kristine says she has also seen how false accusations, courtroom lies, and endless legal battles have robbed children of time with loving parents, causing irreparable damage during the most critical years of development. 'I've watched incredible parents lose precious milestones and moments with their children because the system isn't working. 'I've seen the heartbreak of children pulled back and forth while adults argue in courtrooms, and it's affecting who these children become,' she says. 'It's time we put children first and support parents who are doing everything they can to love and protect their kids. 'It's time we demand systems that work, so families aren't destroyed by lies and delays.'

Bodies recovered from Laurel cemetery bore gunshot wounds to the head

The bodies that were recovered in a public cemetery in Laurel, Batangas on Wednesday had gunshot wounds to the head, a manager of a funeral parlor in the town said as authorities continue to look for the bodies of the missing sabungeros. According to Ian Cruz's report in '24 Oras' on Thursday, the bodies exhumed from the cemetery originated from Dacolo Funeral Services. The manager of the funeral parlor said that the bodies were retrieved in different months from the boundary of the towns of Laurel, Calaca, and Lemery. This was after they were reported to the police, he added. ''Yun nga po, sir, mga tapon lang po tapos may mga tama ng baril [...] laging ulo,' said Jonel Dacolo, manager of Dacolo Funeral Services. (These bodies were just dumped out there and bore gunshot wounds [...] It's always to the head.) Dacolo also said some of the bodies had their hands tied up. However, the funeral parlor said they already forgot what year they received the bodies and that they don't have records. 'Ano pong ire-record ko? Walang ID, walang tattoo, ang mukha pagang-paga na, hindi na makilala, bulok na. Wala po talaga. Tapos lagi pong lahat ay naka-brief lang,' said Dacolo. (What will I record? There's no ID, no tattoos, their faces are beyond unrecognizable and the bodies were decomposed. There's no way to identify these. They were also found only in their underwear.) After no family members claimed the bodies, Dacolo said he sought the police's permission to already bury them. ''Pag halimbawa po na natagal na sa akin ng three days at wala po talagang pagkakakilanlan, tatawag ako sa PNP na kung pwedeng ipalibing na at kung may magke-claim po ay pwede po ipahukay. Ako po ay kanilang pinayagan na mailibing po,' said Dacolo. (For example, if the bodies are already with me for three days and no one has yet claimed them, I called the police and asked if I can already bury them and if someone shows up to claim them, I can just exhume them. The police gave me permission to bury them.) GMA Integrated News requested the police for a copy of the records of the buried bodies. However, the local police chief refused to be interviewed, claiming he does not have the authority to speak on the matter. The local Office of the Civil Registry was supposed to have the records of the retrieved bodies. Unfortunately, these were damaged during a flood brought by Typhoon Kristine last year, the report said. Based on the description given by the funeral parlor and with the help of the residents, GMA Integrated News visited one of the sites where one of the bodies was found. The tri-boundary of the towns of Calaca, Laurel, and Lemery is an area known to locals as a dumping ground for garbage as there is a cliff on the side of the road. The said stretch is also very dark at night due to the absence of street lights, the report said. One resident shared with GMA Integrated News that several bodies have been found beneath the cliff, adding that one body was recovered in the first quarter of the year. He also said that he saw three to four bodies in the area from 2021 to 2022. But the resident said that he's not certain if these bodies are connected with the case of the missing sabungeros. 'Ayan yung mga binabaril lang na parang pinagbibintangan na mga adik,' said 'Alias Lando'. (I think these were shot because they were mistaken for being drug addicts.) Links to e-sabong Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said on Thursday that the three bodies recovered from a public cemetery in Laurel, Batangas floated in Taal Lake in 2020. According to a report in '24 Oras,' the bodies exhumed could be linked to e-sabong but these are different from the case of the missing sabungeros. Remulla added that there were three reported missing persons in Lipa City in 2020 and one of them was female. And one of the retrieved bodies in the cemetery could possibly belong to a woman, he added. 'Mukhang e-sabong 'to, yung tatlo kasi sa Lipa nawala,' said Remulla. (This seems linked to e-sabong, because there were three missing persons in Lipa.) 'Kasama sa pahayag niya (Patidongan) 'yan na in Lipa, there was a pregnant woman. Parang 'yun ang nakikita naming possibility…. Mayroon pang telltale signs but I cannot reveal to you now. But there was a telltale sign where he said that maybe, that is probably the people who were picked up and killed in Lipa,' he also said. (He mentioned about Lipa and that there was a pregnant woman. That's the possibility we are looking at….There are other telltale signs but I cannot reveal that to you now. But there was a telltale sign where he said that maybe, that is probably the people who were picked up and killed in Lipa.) The Justice Dept. is hoping that more DNA samples could be extracted from the bodies for them to conduct tracking. — Vince Angelo Ferreras/RF, GMA Integrated News

Clever dad devises sneaky hack to trick his toddlers into going to bed early: ‘It made us laugh so hard'

Time for bed. One of the many difficult daily tasks parents have is getting their little tots washed and ready for bed at a reasonable time. An Arizona dad, Sean Motsch, devised a clever game to get his young ones to bed early — without them even realizing it. Sean created a rainbow-shaped chart with three different options for his two kiddos. 'Go to the store and buy anything you want, early bedtime or win $100,' Sean's wife, Kristine, explained to What's The Jam. 'Then he stuck it [the chart] under the springy doorstop with an early bedtime in the middle. He told our daughter, Savannah, 'Flick the doorstop, and wherever it lands, you win.' Of course, the doorstop only lands in the middle,' she said. The excited six-year-old girl flicked the doorstop as instructed and eagerly waited for the result with her little sister, Jane. However, after seeing where the stopper landed, she was less than pleased, which resulted in her jumping up and down in tears, begging for another turn. 'Her face when she realised it landed on early bedtime was hilarious,' mom said. 'However, she did cry.' 'But really it made us laugh so hard.' Despite the tears, the results of her spin only meant one thing — she had to go to bed. 'Sean is a prankster by nature; he loves to tease and joke. I believe it's one of his love languages,' his adoring wife said about him. This jokester dad isn't the only one trying different methods to get his tots to bed. Parents on TikTok are feeding their children butter, claiming a spoonful before bed helps them sleep through the night. 'So we are going to try the butter trend where you give your baby a spoonful of butter and apparently it works magic and they sleep all night long,' user @.millieellis said in a video. While some swear it works — experts advise against it as it might cause more harm than good. Charlotte Stirling-Reed, a leading baby nutritionist, told the Independent that butter is high in salt and saturated fat, which isn't recommended for babies. 'Additionally, the texture and slipperiness of butter can pose a choking risk for babies who are still developing their eating skills,' she warned. 'Incorporating butter into cooking or spreading a thin layer on toast is perfectly fine. However, offering large chunks of butter directly from a spoon is not advisable.'
