Assembly Issues Notices To 4 AAP MLAs, Alleges Breach Of Privilege

New Delhi: Delhi Assembly issued notices to leader of opposition Atishi and three other AAP MLAs for allegedly "disclosing" deliberations of the recently held meeting of the general purposes committee, where the decision to install the portraits of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Dayanand Saraswati and Madan Mohan Malviya in the assembly gallery was taken. Officials said that besides Atishi, the notices were sent to AAP MLAs Kuldeep Kumar, Veer Singh Dhingan and Zubair Ahmed, directing them to submit written comments on the complaint on or before May 30. A complaint of "contempt and breach of privilege" was filed by BJP members in the committee. Reacting to the notices, former deputy speaker and senior AAP functionary Rakhi Bidlan charged BJP with "disrespecting Dalits and women", by treating the demand as a punishable offence. "This is not just political arrogance. It is a direct insult to the legacy of India's first Dalit woman educator," she said. A senior assembly official said the statements of AAP functionaries contained several "factually incorrect, misleading and politically motivated" allegations against the speaker and the committee. "AAP functionaries were deliberately twisting and misrepresenting the facts. Action, as deemed fit, shall be taken," the official said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo A row erupted after the general purpose meeting on Wednesday as AAP alleged that its MLAs, who were on the panel, proposed that Mata Savitribai Phule's portrait also be installed on the Delhi assembly premises, but the BJP legislators did not allow this to be passed. The assembly officials, however, claimed that no written proposal was submitted and the issue was raised verbally. In a complaint addressed to Delhi assembly speaker Vijender Gupta on May 22, deputy speaker Mohan Singh Bisht, BJP chief whip Abhay Verma, and party MLAs Raj Kumar Bhatia and Tilak Ram Gupta alleged that the AAP members, during the deliberations, made a passing suggestion that Phule's portrait could also be installed. "However, we were shocked to find out that the members of AAP twisted the facts and declared in a press conference that the ruling party members opposed their proposal and did not allow for the portrait of Mata Savitribai Phule to be installed," the complaint said. Bisht added that the very fact that the deliberations of the committee were disclosed was a "serious issue of breach of privilege" and added that their suggestion was noted in the minutes of the meeting. "Our rules provide that the deliberations cannot be disclosed unless the report is submitted to the House or the speaker allows it. Accordingly, we are hereby giving notice for initiating breach of privilege and contempt proceedings against Atishi, Kuldeep Kumar, Veer Singh Dhingan, and Zubair Ahmad for disclosing the details of proceedings of the GPC and also for disclosing it in a false and twisted manner," the BJP legislators said in the complaint. They accused AAP MLAs of "disclosing the deliberation" with a "political and mischievous agenda". "The conduct of these members... in disclosing the details of the deliberations and also misrepresenting it in a false manner for cheap political mileage needs to be severely dealt with," the BJP MLAs said. "Not only have they insulted us personally and our beloved party, but they have dragged the privileged institution of the assembly and its committees into the public domain with a view to besmirch the reputation of the ruling party members and cast aspersion on the working of the committees," they added. Where's free power promise: AAP to Delhi government

NEW DELHI: The Aam Aadmi Party on Monday accused the BJP-led Delhi government of preparing to hike electricity tariffs, contradicting its pre-election promise of providing 300 units of free electricity per month. AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar alleged that the government has delivered a 'double blow' to Delhiites—first by subjecting them to prolonged power cuts, and now by increasing electricity rates by 7%. He said the BJP is burdening citizens with rising costs, in contrast to the previous AAP government's record of delivering 24x7 power and 200 units free at the lowest rates in the country. 'Ever since the BJP formed governments at all levels impacting Delhi, citizens have only received the 'gift' of inflation. Now, BJP is preparing to give Delhiites the next blow—expensive electricity,' Kumar said at a press conference. He claimed that during the Delhi Assembly polls, the BJP promised 300 units of free power. 'It has been over three months since they came to power, yet the promise remains unfulfilled. Instead, during peak summer, people are facing 6–7 hours of daily power cuts. Under Arvind Kejriwal's leadership, residents had forgotten power cuts and even removed inverters. Now, they are being forced to reinstall them.' Kumar added that the BJP is planning a 7% electricity tariff hike in May and June, which will severely impact households. 'They came to power promising free electricity but are now helping power companies profit at the cost of the common man.'

‘Won't let the poor suffer': AAP hits out at BJP govt. over hike in power tariff

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday attacked the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the increase in power purchase adjustment cost (PPAC), which will lead to higher bills for lakhs of consumers in the city from next month. The Opposition party demanded that the tariff be rolled back. When reached for comment, the BJP did not respond. AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar accused the Delhi government of working in the interests of private players. 'A hike in PPAC will massively increase electricity bills. After coming to power by promising 300 units of free electricity, the BJP is now helping power companies profit by burdening the common man with the extra tariff,' Mr. Kumar said. He added, 'If the government proceeds with its plan to increase the tariff, AAP will strongly oppose it at every level. We will not allow Delhi's poor to suffer from unaffordable electricity bills. Delhiites have seen the BJP's true face — false promises and failed delivery. Before the Assembly poll, the BJP promised ₹2,500 for women and 300 units of free electricity. Till now, it hasn't delivered either.' What is PPAC? The PPAC is a surcharge that increases or decreases depending on the prevailing prices of fuel, such as coal and gas, used in power generation. It is calculated and charged on the fixed and variable parts of the bill, depending on monthly consumption. These two components, along with some minor charges, comprise the total bill. The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission had earlier this month permitted discoms to recover costs linked to fuel price fluctuations during the third quarter of 2024-25. From May 9 to June 30, the PPAC for consumers of the BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL), which provides electricity to south and west Delhi, and the BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), which covers east and central parts of the city, have more than doubled. The two discoms together provide power to nearly 51 lakh consumers in the Capital. However, the PPAC for electricity consumers of the New Delhi Municipal Council and the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited remain unchanged at 50.86% and 19.22% respectively.

AAP slams BJP govt alleging power cuts, likely tariff hike in Delhi

AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar on Monday accused the BJP government of Delhi of failing to deliver on its poll promise of continuing free electricity, alleging that residents are now facing frequent power cuts and a looming hike in electricity tariffs . There was no immediate response from the Delhi government or the BJP over the allegations. #Operation Sindoor The damage done at Pak bases as India strikes to avenge Pahalgam Why Pakistan pleaded to end hostilities Kashmir's Pahalgam sparks Karachi's nightmare Addressing a press conference, Kumar, who represents the Kondli assembly constituency , said, "The AAP government provided 24x7 electricity for the past 10 years. Not only did we ensure uninterrupted supply, but we also gave free electricity up to 200 units and subsidised rates up to 400 units. We offered the cheapest electricity in the country." He alleged that, contrary to its promise of free electricity up to 300 units made in the run-up to the recent elections, the BJP government has only delivered "power cuts". by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Co-Founder of Google Brain, Andrew Ng, Recommends: "These 5 Books Will Turn Your Life Around" Blinkist: Andrew Ng's Reading List Undo Kumar claimed that the BJP dispensation is planning to increase electricity tariffs by up to seven per cent during the summer months of May, June, and July. "Today, the people of Delhi are faced with two models of governance -- one where AAP ensured round-the-clock free and affordable electricity and the other where the BJP is preparing to hike rates while failing to ensure a reliable supply," he said. The AAP managed to retain 22 seats.
