Maratha quota demand: Jarange to start fresh agitation from Mumbai on Aug 29
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: Activist Manoj Jarange has said he will launch a fresh agitation on Aug 29 in Mumbai to press for his demand of reservation for the Maratha community. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Jarange said he along with other members of the Maratha community will leave from his Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, located around 400 km from Mumbai, on Aug 27. The activist has undertaken multiple hunger strikes demanding the recognition of all Marathas as Kunbis -- an agrarian caste listed under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category -- and reservation for the politically dominant community in government jobs and education. "We will leave for Mumbai at 10 am on August 27 from Antarwali Sarati. We will make our first halt near Shivneri Fort in Junnar area of Pune district. We will go to Shivneri from Antarwali via Shevgaon, Ahilyanagar and Alephata and avoid the Malshej Ghat due to the monsoon," Jarange said. The next day, he will go to Chakan. From there, the agitators will head to south Mumbai via Talegaon, Lonawala, Vashi and Chembur, the activist said. "The agitation will start on August 29 at the Azad Maidan in Mumbai," he added. Jarange has appealed to people from the Maratha community to join his agitation in Mumbai. He has also said leaders from the Maratha community who do not participate in the agitation should be defeated in elections. The Maharashtra legislature last year passed a bill providing 10 per cent reservation to the Maratha community under a separate category. But Jarange has been insisting on the quota for the community under the OBC category. The activist has claimed that more than 58 lakh documents have been collected to prove that Kunbis and Marathas are the same, and demanded the release of Kunbi certificates based on these records. Meet at Shivneri fort for march: Jarange
Kolhapur: Quota activist Manoj Jarange has urged members of the Maratha community to gather at Shivneri fort on the evening of Aug 27. From there, a large-scale march to Mumbai's Azad Maidan is set to begin on Aug 29. The primary goal of the march is to press for several demands, including legal recognition of Marathas as Kunbis, which would make them eligible for the 27% reservation quota under the Other Backward Class (OBC) category for government jobs and education. Speaking to the activists in Solapur on Wednesday, Jarange called on the Marathas to ask the elected representatives, from village heads to ministers, to join the march. He also warned that those who do not participate could face consequences in the upcoming local body elections. While Jarange did not issue a boycott call for the elections, he said the decision on how Maratha votes will be cast would be determined later. "After our march to Mumbai in Jan 2024 was stopped at Vashi, we were given several assurances which have not been fulfilled. We have been betrayed by the govt," Jarange said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The World's Most Beautiful Cities Where Life is Simply Better Undo "This time around we will not return without winning the reservation battle. I am leaving from Antarwali Sarati on Aug 27 at 10am and will reach Shivneri fort via Paithan, Shevgaon, Ahilyanagar and Alephata," he added. The quota activist said that a team was sent to check the feasibility of Malahej ghat route to reach Mumbai. "However, owing to several hurdles, this route is not feasible," he said. "Visibility there is very low and landslides may occur. There is no single tyre puncture repair shop, neither snacks or tea stall along the 50-60 km stretch. To avoid the inconvenience to our brothers who will come by vehicles, we may take the Chakan-Talegaon-Vashi-Chembur route to reach the venue," said Jarange. He said state govt should fulfil the demands by Aug 26 and if not by then the Marathas will begin the march and will not stop till we reach Azad Maidan.

Maratha reservation: Jarange warns of fresh hunger strike on August 29
Reservation activist Manoj Jarange on Tuesday (July 29, 2025) accused the Maharashtra government of failing to fulfil its promises to the Maratha community and warned of launching a fresh hunger strike in Mumbai on August 29. Speaking to media persons at Antarwali Sarthi village in Jalna district, Mr. Jarange alleged that the government has deceived the Maratha community. The activist has undertaken multiple hunger strikes demanding the recognition of all Marathas as Kunbis — an agrarian caste listed under the Other Backward Classes category and reservation for the politically dominant community in government jobs and education. He has consistently called for the implementation of historical records, including the Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad gazettes, which he claims document the classification of the Maratha community as Kunbis. "Four major demands of the Marathas, which the government assured would be implemented, have not been fulfilled. The government has once again deceived the community," Mr. Jarange said. He warned of undertaking a fresh hunger strike in Mumbai on August 29 and launching a march to the city. "We have been patient for the last two years. Now the time has come to rise. I appeal to all Marathas — don't sit silently. We must fight for our rights," he said, urging community members to wrap up their farming activities in two months and prepare to march to Mumbai. The activist slammed the administration for failing to issue the government gazette regarding the Sage Soyare notification and for not implementing the gazettes of Bombay, Satara, and Hyderabad. He claimed that more than 58 lakh documents have been collected to prove that Kunbis and Marathas are the same, and demanded the release of Kunbi certificates based on these records. While appreciating the efforts of the Shinde Committee in unearthing crucial documents, he criticised government officers for not issuing Kunbi certificates despite evidence. Mr. Jarange further lashed out at the State government for not withdrawing cases registered against Maratha reservation protesters, calling it a betrayal of trust. "I will not back down this time. The government must act or face the consequences," he said.
