(AP) — Denis Bouanga scored on a first-half penalty kick and Hugo Lloris made it stand up for his third straight clean sheet as Los Angeles FC edged Minnesota United 1-0 on Wednesday night. Bouanga scored his 11th goal when he sent a right-footed shot past Dayne St. Clair in the 42nd minute. The PK was awarded after Jeremy Ebobisse was fouled by defender Nicolás Romero, who received a yellow card. Lloris finished with three saves for his league-high-tying ninth clean sheet of the season for LAFC (10-5-5). St. Clair entered with nine shutouts and totaled five saves for Minnesota United (11-5-7), which falls to 6-3-3 at home. Minnesota United has just one home win over LAFC, which joined the league in 2018. That came in March of last season in the debut of Minnesota manager Eric Ramsay. LAFC posted a 1-0 victory over Minnesota United at home in the season opener. LAFC improves to 2-3-4 on the road. Sources: LAFC to sign Canada's Mathieu Choinière
Canadian national team midfielder Mathieu Choinière is finalizing a move to LAFC and is set to make a return to MLS after one year abroad, The Athletic has learned. Choinière, a CF Montréal homegrown product, signed with Grasshopper FC in Switzerland last August and played in 17 games in the Swiss Super League, but now will come back to compete for a job with LAFC. Sources said Choinière was signed on a $1 million fee last summer. The 26-year-old now looks set to join LAFC in the summer window, which opens July 24. Advertisement Interestingly, LAFC owns Grasshopper, buying a majority stake in January 2024. Choinière has 17 caps with Canada, including four appearances and three starts in this summer's Gold Cup. Choinière was born in Quebec and came up through CF Montréal's academy, signing a first-team deal in 2018. He made 120 appearances over six and a half seasons (89 starts), scoring 11 goals with three assists. He was an MLS All-Star in 2023 and 2024. Entering Wednesday night's match at Minnesota United, LAFC (9-5-5) sits in sixth place in the MLS Western Conference but has multiple games in hand on the rest of the teams in the table due it its participation in the FIFA Club World Cup.

LAFC defender Aaron Long out for the season, has surgery on ruptured left Achilles
Los Angeles FC defender Aaron Long will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a ruptured left Achilles. The team — which said the surgery was successful — made the announcement on Tuesday, three days after Long was injured in the 76th minute of a 2-0 win over FC Dallas. The 32-year-old Long is in his third season with LAFC and has started all 15 games this year, scoring one goal. He's started 60 games for the club over the past three seasons. Long has also made 35 career appearances with the U.S. men's national team, with three goals and two assists. He was part of the 2022 World Cup roster and last played for the national team in 2023 at the Gold Cup. LAFC is currently in sixth place in the MLS Western Conference standings with a 9-5-5 record.
