LASD serves search warrant as investigation into deadly explosion continues
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Monday said it served a search warrant in Marina del Rey as it searches for answers after three longtime deputies died in an explosion last week. The warrant was executed in the 13900 Block of Marquesas Way in Marina del Rey. The LASD said the warrant was served to follow "all leads and evidence" into the origins of devices that were found in Santa Monica on Thursday, the night before the fatal blast. The area where the search took place is located on the Marina del Rey Marina and contains apartment buildings and businesses, with hundreds of boats docked around the perimeter on the water. It's not yet clear what buildings were searched, and if anything crucial to the investigation was found. Authorities confirmed that on Thursday night, LASD investigators were called to assist the Santa Monica Police Department with a report of possible explosive materials in the 800 block of Bay Street in Santa Monica. There, detectives recovered items that appeared to be grenades, the department said. On Friday, after the explosion, senior law enforcement officials who were briefed on the investigation told CBS News that the grenades were transported to Biscailuz Training Facility. There, members of the highly skilled and trained Arson Explosives Detail were working to render the grenades safe when the explosion occurred, the officials said. The Sheriff's Department later identified the fallen deputies as detectives Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Victor Lemus and William Osborn. The LASD stopped short of fully connecting the grenades to the fatal explosion on Monday, saying investigators were continuing to "conduct their post-blast investigation and reconstruct the incident scene" before drawing a conclusion. "These investigations take time, and we are committed to conducting a thorough examination to accurately determine the cause," the LASD said in Monday's news release. Monday's search warrant was at least the second served since the explosion. In the hours following the blast, the Santa Monica garage where the grenades were found in was searched, the LASD said. No additional details were immediately made available.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) homicide detectives evacuated a Santa Monica complex and are in the process of obtaining a search warrant in relation to the devastating explosion Friday morning that left multiple deputies dead at the agency's Special Enforcement Bureau in East Los Angeles. The blast, which happened at the Biscailuz Training Facility just after 7:30 a.m., killed three deputies assigned to the arson explosives detail. Human Remains Discovered Days After Devastating California Fireworks Facility Explosion LASD officials told Fox News Digital that the same personnel involved in Friday's fatal blast responded to a call Thursday at a complex in Santa Monica where they assisted the local police department in seizing explosives. Read On The Fox News App It is unclear if the deputies killed on Friday were examining the explosives at the time of the blast. LASD said homicide detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the Santa Monica location and "out of the abundance of caution," the LAPD bomb squad, L.A. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Los Angeles will search the location for any potential explosive materials. "At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today's critical incident," officials wrote in a statement to Fox Digital. "Santa Monica PD is assisting the Sheriff's Department in this incident and have evacuated the residents in the complex. They are in the process of locating a shelter for displaced residents." The FBI and ATF are investigating the "post-blast portion" of the incident, according to Luna. The tragedy marked the largest loss of life within the department since 1857. "If you're familiar with our Special Enforcement Bureau, they're the best of the best. The individuals who work on our arson explosives detail have years of training," Luna said. "They average about 1,100 [calls] per year, so these aren't people who don't do this very often. They are fantastic experts, and unfortunately, I lost three of them today. … There are other law enforcement agencies who have bomb techs, not only around the country, around the world, that want to know what happened here. We want to make sure that we don't repeat this." Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed DHS is working with state and federal law enforcement in relation to the incident. California Gov. Gavin Newsom was briefed and offered full state assistance to the sheriff's office, according to a statement. Los Angeles Fire Department Capt. Erik Scott confirmed LAFD's arson and ATF members are assisting with the investigation. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass offered the city's support in an X post. Three killed in deadly blast at LA sheriff training center
Three people were killed Friday in an explosion at the arson and explosives unit at Biscailuz Center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's main training academy in East L.A., authorities said. One other person was injured. Few details have been released about what caused the blast, which occurred during a training-related operation. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it is cooperating with investigators, and no foul play is currently suspected. The explosion is the latest in a series of deadly incidents tied to LASD training sites across the county. At least 15 people have died during department training activities since 2016, according to records reviewed by the Los Angeles Times. The incidents include medical emergencies, tactical mishaps, and another explosion in 2020 at the department's mobile range facility in Castaic, which seriously injured a bomb technician. Some of the deaths occurred during physically demanding drills. In one case, a recruit suffered a heart attack after a long training run. In others, causes were not made public, and family members have said they received little information from the department. The sheriff's department operates more than two dozen specialized facilities for firearms, bomb squads, K-9 units, and emergency driving. Oversight and reporting standards vary, and many of the incidents have not been widely disclosed. In the wake of Friday's explosion, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has called for a full review of training site safety and transparency. Officials have not yet released the names of those killed. The post Three killed in deadly blast at LA sheriff training center appeared first on
