Sharp to sell symbolic LCD plant to parent company Foxconn

KYODO NEWS - 10 hours ago - 23:59 | All, Japan Japanese electronics firm Sharp Corp. said Monday it will sell a liquid crystal display panel plant in central Japan, once viewed as a symbol of the company's strong position in the TV market, to its Taiwanese parent company, Foxconn. The company will sell the second plant at its LCD production site in Kameyama, Mie Prefecture, where it currently makes LCD screens for smartphones and personal computers. The facility, along with the first plant at the site, once produced LCD TVs known as the "Kameyama Model," which helped boost Sharp's presence in the large-screen TV market. Sharp said that once the sale to its parent company, formally known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., is completed by August 2026, it will buy panels produced at the factory for use in its products. The first plant at the Kameyama site will focus on making LCD panels for automobiles. The electronics maker has scaled down output at the plants through 2024 amid intensified competition from overseas LCD panel manufacturers. Japan's Jera pledges stable power supply by using LNG-fired plant

NAGOYA (Kyodo) -- Japanese energy firm Jera Co. has pledged to contribute to stable power supply this summer by utilizing one of the world's largest power plants fueled by liquefied natural gas. The firm showed the Kawagoe thermal power station in Mie Prefecture with a maximum output of 4.80 million kilowatts to the media ahead of summer, when electricity consumption rises due to high air conditioning usage. "Stable (power) supply is the most important mission," said Motoki Katsutani, chief of the power station operated by a joint venture between Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings Inc. and Chubu Electric Power Co. The plant's capacity has been boosted since its first unit began commercial operation in June 1989. By utilizing the LNG-fired plant that can control output easily, Jera seeks to compensate for fluctuations in solar power generation, which has been rapidly expanding in the area. This summer, the region is projected to have an electricity reserve rate topping 8 percent, a proportion necessary for stable supply. With Japan planning to rely heavily on renewable and nuclear energy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, LNG is expected to play a key role in bridging its transition from fossil fuels to renewables. Burning natural gas emits less carbon than most other fossil fuels and switching from coal to gas reduces emissions by 50 percent when producing electricity, according to an estimate by the International Energy Agency.

Japan's Hokuriku Electric to build 600-MW gas-fired power plant in north

Tokyo: Hokuriku Electric Power said on Monday that it will build a new 600 megawatt LNG-fired power generation unit at its Toyama Shinko power station in northern Japan, with operations slated to begin in the 2033/34 fiscal year. The new unit will replace two aging thermal power units - a 250-MW coal-fired unit and an idled 240-MW oil-fired unit. The company expects the replacement to reduce its annual carbon dioxide emissions by around 2 million metric tons, it said.
