Grand Prix bicycle race speeds through Northbrook

The Northbrook Grand Prix cycling racing series, also known as the Chicago Grit, brought excitement to Northbrook July 24 when it sent cyclists racing through its course in the suburb's downtown for the fourth year. Rain held off and temperatures cooled from an extended heat wave for the two last professional races of the day. Northbrook has held the Thursday slot in the 10-day competitive series that began this year on Friday, July 18 in West Dundee and concluded in Chicago's Fulton Market on July 27. Host suburban towns included Glen Ellyn, Winfield, Mundelein, Lombard, Brookfield, Elgin and Lake Bluff. A free community bike ride also attracted cyclists and riders of all ages to try the Northbrook course on closed streets around Village Green Park. Professional level races Thursday included the Garner Cyclery Women Pro Cat 1/2 and Garner Cyclery Men Pro Cat 1/2. Richard Holec of Durango, Colorado celebrated taking first place in the men's pro race and Kendall Ryan of Ventura, California, repeated her first place 2024 win in Northbrook, capturing the top spot in the women's pro race. Holec said shortly after the men's pro race that teammates were going 'fast' at the sprint. 'I guess we probably hit 40 (miles per hour) at the end,' Holec said. 'We just took over the last half block.' Kendall Ryan said after the women's race, 'Last year we won this race as well and I just kind of wanted to do something similar.' Taking part in the community ride were Northbrook residents Ryan Fields and niece Hallie Levi, 7, a rising second-grader. Fields said the course had some, 'great turns and some good straightaways and a nice view of the downtown Northbrook area.' Northbrook Police Officer Scott Plepel, also a bike officer, took part in the community ride and said the newer hometown ride tradition is wholesome. 'We look forward to this part every year,' he said. In partnership with Northbrook governmental entities, the Northbrook Grand Prix is organized with volunteers and the LOC, the event's local organizing committee. Volunteers included Social Media Coordinator Terry Kasdan of Northbrook, a 22-year resident, who grew up in Glenview and is of the Glenbrook South High School Class of 1991. Son Jonah Kasdan, a 2025 Glenbrook North High School graduate, served as social media intern. Racers included cyclists from the Philippines and New Zealand, Terry Kasdan said. Northbrook is home to a storied velodrome. 'It's a really cool event that attracts people from all over the world,' Terry Kasdan said. 'Northbrook is a great sports town.' Jonah Kasdan said Instagram is the race's popular social media platform. 'The things that are really good for social media, I would say, are the corners,' Jonah Kasdan said. 'You can see all of them (cyclists) really lean into the turns, it makes for really good action shots for both photos and videos. 'And towards the end of the race, seeing them all speed up and really sprint towards the end, it's always super exciting,' Jonah Kasdan added. 'So we always try to get a video of them finishing up and it makes for a lot of really good posts.' Matt Curin of Northbrook, sponsorship director and founder of the Northbrook Grand Prix, said fundraising dollars again fell short this year. Curin said the 2025 fee to the race series was about $12,000. Extra are expenses for police protection and public works input, as examples. A beer garden concept was also discussed this year but did not happen for 2025, with a goal for an event beer garden next year, pending village approval. On May 28, 2024, a Northbrook resident on the 1300 block of Church Street (along the race route) had asked the Northbrook Village Board of Trustees to move the Northbrook Grand Prix to Wood Oaks Green Park in west Northbrook. Curin said that specific relocation will never happen, 'because nobody's going to come and watch it. 'You want the race where people are going to be and this is where people are going to be,' Curin added on July 24. 'And also like, all these people are getting drinks and spending money at all the businesses. If you have it at Wood Oaks (Green) Park, it's not going to benefit the community.' The renowned 'Save Ferris' water tower from the 1986 John Hughes movie 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' is visible along the Northbrook Grand Prix flagship turn at Shermer Road and Meadow Road. 'It's Ferris Bueller's hometown,' Curin said. 'What else could you ask for?'

Mosengo-Omba is visiting Kenya and Tanzania to meet with Local Organizing Committee ('LOC') of the kick-off on 02 August at Benjamin Mkapa Stadium. Nairobi's Kasarani Stadium that has undergone major renovations thanks to investment from Kenya Government, will host the Final match of the competition on 30 August 2025. Mosengo-Omba said: 'There is so much work and progress that has been made by the three countries; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda over the last few months working closely with the CAF team that has been on ground for a while. I must commend the work of the three Governments and the Leaders of the three Member Associations from the three Nations. Today, I inspected the main stadium in Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium as well as some of the training facilities. We no longer have questions of the state of readiness, we are now just focusing on minor detail to ensure that we have everything in place by 02 August 2025. I will be visiting Tanzania tomorrow – the venue for the opening match.' Mosengo-Omba was joined by Nicholas Musonye, Chairman of the LOC; Harold Ndege, FKF General Secretary and Evans Achoki, Secretary of Administration in the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports. Kenya hands over Nyayo Stadium to CHAN LOC as tournament nears

Published: Friday, 18 July 2025 With just over two weeks to go before the start of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, Kenya's Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports has officially handed over the Nyayo National Stadium to the tournament's Local Organising Committee (LOC). The stadium, situated in the capital Nairobi, is one of the primary venues for the continental showpiece and will host six key fixtures—including selected Group A matches and the decisive Group C clash between Algeria and Nigeria. The handover marks a major milestone in Kenya's preparations as co-host, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, for the 2–30 August competition dedicated exclusively to home-based players. Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Mr Salim Mvurya, confirmed that the upgrades to the stadium have met all the requirements set out by CAF following a series of rigorous inspections. 'We have ensured that everything is in place and now the facility is ready to be handed over to the LOC,' Mvurya stated. 'This is done, and the next focus now is to get Kenyans to rally behind the Harambee Stars and demonstrate our passion, commitment and patriotism as a nation. "We expect to have lots of visitors as well coming in and this will be a good tourism boost for our country.' The extensive renovations at Nyayo and the nearby Kasarani Stadium were supervised by the Kenya Defense Forces to guarantee international standards. Speaking at the handover, Cabinet Secretary for Defense, Ms Soipan Tuya, lauded the effort. 'The Ministry of Defense is very proud that we have successfully overseen the world-class renovation of these two stadia. We have built facilities to the standards required,' she said. In addition to the match venues, the Ministry also officially handed over two training grounds—Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium—which will serve as vital preparation bases for participating teams. As Kenya inches closer to hosting its first-ever CHAN, the completed infrastructure is a clear signal of the country's readiness to deliver a successful and memorable tournament.

CHAN 2024: Uganda's volunteer force gears up to deliver memorable tournament

Published: Friday, 18 July 2025 Uganda is stepping up its preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 by finalising a dedicated team of volunteers set to play a pivotal role in the East African nation's co-hosting duties. With just weeks to go until the continental tournament kicks off on 2 August 2025, Uganda's Local Organising Committee (LOC) has completed the initial phase of its volunteer recruitment drive, drawing a remarkable 1,884 applicants during the application window held from 14 to 22 June. The overwhelming response reflects the growing public excitement ahead of the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. Following strict eligibility checks—particularly the age requirement of 18 and above—1,222 applicants have advanced to the next stage of the programme. These selected volunteers will undergo comprehensive training beginning 25 July, led by experts from the Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF). The training will cover venue-specific protocols, operational standards, and service excellence to ensure that volunteers are fully prepared to contribute to the success of Africa's premier home-based player competition. Mr. Justus Mugisha, Chairman of the Workforce and Volunteers Committee, expressed his delight at the level of enthusiasm shown by Ugandans during the application process. 'The ambiance around this exercise has created a lot of excitement from the public, and the enormous numbers received indicate what kind of memories will be created at the end of the tournament,' he said. The selected volunteers will be stationed across Uganda's designated venues and will assist with logistics, hospitality, protocol, media operations, and fan services. Organisers believe the volunteers' energy and commitment will be instrumental in delivering a world-class experience to players, officials, and visiting fans. As CHAN 2024 draws near, the spirit of unity and participation continues to grow across the host nations. Uganda's volunteer programme stands as a testament to the country's readiness to welcome Africa and deliver a tournament to remember.

Liquor scam: Look out circular issued against YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy

Vijayawada: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the alleged multi-crore liquor scam in Andhra Pradesh issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy after a local court rejected his anticipatory bail plea on Tuesday. The LOC was issued to prevent the Rajampet MP from leaving the country. The move came in the backdrop of what officials described as non-cooperation from the accused leader, who allegedly evaded summons on multiple occasions. According to SIT sources, Midhun Reddy is one of the key accused in the liquor syndicate case involving irregularities in procurement, distribution, and alleged kickbacks linked to liquor companies operating in the state. The investigation revealed a nexus between political leaders, officials, and private entities that resulted in major financial irregularities and policy manipulation. The court, while denying the anticipatory bail, had observed that custodial interrogation was necessary given the gravity of the allegations and the accused's influential position, which might impact the course of the investigation if he remained out of reach. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like [속보]'한 달만에 5cm 성장!?' 2개월치 무료증정 압도적 키성장 1위! 아이클타임 더 알아보기 Undo The SIT earlier served notices to Midhun Reddy under relevant provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code, asking him to appear for questioning. However, his failure to respond and the rejection of his legal protection prompted the investigators to escalate the matter by alerting immigration authorities through the LOC. Multiple raids conducted by the SIT in recent weeks across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana led to the seizure of documents, digital records, and unaccounted cash. Officials suspect the use of shell companies and benami transactions to channel bribes and divert funds. The case, being monitored at the highest level, led to the arrest and questioning of several individuals, including liquor traders, middlemen, and former bureaucrats. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also coordinating with the SIT on parallel probes concerning money laundering angles.
