Measures planned to prevent landslides

Measures planned to prevent landslides In 2023, Hong Kong saw its largest recorded rockfall in a century at Yiu Hing Road in Shau Kei Wan. File photo: AFP The Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) on Monday said it will launch a series of risk management and prevention measures to help make sure slopes across the city can withstand extreme weather. This includes expanding the office's slope catalogue to cover natural hillsides, to better analyse landslide risks and put prevention plans in place. Tests will be carried out on an automatic system for monitoring slopes with drones during periods of heavy rain, while environmental data will be collected to help the office and rescue teams come up with contingency plans for any incidents. 'After adopting the automatic system, we can allow the drones to arrive at different sites, including our LPM [Landslip Preventive Measures] construction sites, slope and landslide sites,' said Lawrence Shum, a GEO deputy head. 'By doing so, they can capture instantly the information of areas, and help us identify some progress of sites, and actual condition of landslide sites and whether we should deploy more resources to handle emergencies,' he added. The office said it received a total of 181 landslide reports last year. None of them caused any casualties. 'There were no fatalities last year not because the incidents were minor, but instead, the landslides did not hit any buildings or roads,' Shum said. In 2023, Hong Kong saw its largest recorded rockfall in a century at Yiu Hing Road in Shau Kei Wan during heavy rain, while a landslide also closed Shek O Road for two days.

La Petite Maison Unveils New Cocktail Menu Inspired By The French Riviera

A visit to any La Petite Maison restaurant immediately transports you to the South of France. Tables are decorated with lemons, tomatoes and olive oil, and the menu is filled with signature French favorites like escargot. The spot is known for its signature Tomatini cocktail, a sweeter rendition of the Blood Mary. However, LPM just unveiled a whole slew of French Riviera inspired cocktails through its innovative new menu, Déjà Vu. Déjà Vu is a love letter to the South of France, highlighting icons like Brigitte Bardot and Grace Kelly, who turned the Côte d'Azur into what it is today. It resembles a glossy vintage French editorial magazine, highlighting the nostalgia of the 50s to 90s within the South of France. To create the magazine, the LPM team gathered information on all that was happening in this era and used it as inspiration for the menu. Every cocktail on the menu reflects a memory or musing from the Riviera and has a link to what was happening back in the day in France. 'As a brand deeply rooted in the culture of the South of France, we wanted to create a menu that not only celebrated our heritage but felt like a product of that place and time,' explains Tibor Krascsenics, La Petite Maison's global beverage director in an interview with Forbes. 'The idea of presenting the menu as a vintage magazine allowed us to capture the charm of a beachside afternoon in Antibes or a café terrace in Saint-Tropez, thumbing through old editorials, horoscopes and crossword puzzles. It's a way of storytelling that mirrors the way people linger, connect and celebrate life in the Riviera.' From conception to now, the menu took the team nearly a year to create. 'Our new menu is a natural transition—moving from the dreamlike elegance of the Belle Époque into the sun-soaked glamour of the French Riviera's Golden Era,' he says. 'We're shifting the mood, dialing up the vibrancy and inviting guests to experience the spirit of the Riviera through bold, refreshing cocktails and a new rhythm of storytelling.' As the latest evolution of LPM's cocktail menu, you can expect to find drinks like the Birkin, a twist on the Americano with an orange hued color that plays ode to the original Hermes Birkin and is served with a custom French silk scarf of the stem and crocodile-patterned ice, or Soleil, a sunny twist on the Gin and Tonic taking inspiration from the iconic Soleil fragrance from Fragonard. The cocktail is made with a special 44°N Gin that was made in collaboration with LPM and is served in a bespoke soda bottle alongside a sample of the perfume. Other notable cocktails include Douliou Douliou, a take on the Pina Colada that is based on a famous St. Tropez song, or Mr. Monaco, a champagne cocktail in honor of Graham 'Mr. Monaco' Hill's world record for the most victories at the Monaco Formula 1. The new menu also brings mirroring non-alcoholic options to ensure that every guest feels welcome. 'We wanted to introduce a mirrored menu so that every guest could be a part of our mixology,' says Krascsenics. 'The approach to this new menu is unique - something that only belongs to us, and will hopefully inspire not only our guests, but our industry peers and team members as well.' For now, Déjà Vu will only be available at the Dubai LPM location. However, over the next few months, it will be rolled out at all LPM locations around the world.

There's a cool new Formula One-inspired mocktail in Abu Dhabi

Your love for sport and mixology, shaken and stirred… This race day-inspired mocktail is simply called Grand Prix , and it's part of La Petite Maison Abu Dhabi's cool new beverage menu, Déjà vu, that was unveiled last night on World Cocktail Day. With elderflower and pear taking pole position, the beverage, priced at Dhs52 (yes, LPM can be surprisingly affordable) celebrates one of the world's favourite races, the Monaco Grand Prix, known for taking place on a unique 'street-circuit' layout. Its cocktail counterpart is called, you guessed it, Monaco. Which should tell you how cleverly the new menu's been designed. It also packs in 9 other creatively conceptualised mocktails, including the Jane (Dhs118), with cantaloupe and tonic water (named after Jane Birkin). It's cocktail counterpart? The Birkin (also Dhs118) – served complete with a silk scarf. Talk about finesse. See a pattern? Déjà vu is cool, smart and clever – a mocktail list of 10 beverages, and a cocktail list serving 10 of its own – placed next to each other, the creations complement each other – all celebrating the Golden Age of the French Riviera. Media: Instagram, What's On archive Other interesting creations that grabbed our attention include the BB Sour/Tropezienne Sour , with lemon, honey and citrus olive oil, the Soleil/Solaris with pink grapefruit, cucumber and lemon, and of course, the Garden of Eden with salted pink apple and lavender soda. While we had to conclude things there since this was a Tuesday night, Déjà vu is an extensive, creative 'carte de boissons' of meticulous masterpieces designed and presented as a print magazine, rolling back the years to 1975. We'll go as far as to say this has the potential to follow in the footsteps of the Le Monde d'Hermès collectors' edition catalogues. French actress, singer, and model Brigitte Bardot makes the cover, before you flip through a whole new world of signature LPM hospitality. And if you're a traditionalist… …you can have a real déjà vu and order the evergreen Tomatini/Tomatino, or Lettre à Coco (inspired by Coco Chanel and Jean Cocteau's friendship). See more here. Influencer calls whole tomato at Las Vegas restaurant ‘iconic' — while others are deeply confused: ‘So dystopian'

Influencers need to ketchup with the times. A woman took great pleasure in being served a whole tomato and lemon in place of a bread basket at a restaurant, and now 'influencer culture' is being roasted on social media. 'OK, so we're at LPM in Vegas and they give out tomatoes and lemon as your little bread at the table,' Cassidy Miller said in a TikTok video. Advertisement 'Which is great for me because I'm gluten-free, so this is, like, iconic.' The New Jersey resident then filmed as she sliced a piece of the tomato, squeezed the lemon on it, then topped it with olive oil, salt and pepper. As she took a bite into the tomato served at the French Mediterranean restaurant, her eyes widened in euphoria. Advertisement 'Wow. So fresh, so good,' she said in the clip, which has amassed 5 million views. The video has received thousands of comments — mainly by people in disbelief that Miller would be that excited over being served a tomato. 'If someone brought me a tomato in place of bread, I would contact my lawyer immediately,' someone commented. Advertisement 'Do they let you wash the dishes for the full experience?' one person joked. 'Acting like tomato slices are a delicacy is frying me,' another wrote. 'They gave y'all a Great Depression snack,' a user quipped. 3 An influencer took great pleasure in being served a whole tomato and lemon instead of a bread basket at a restaurant, as seen in her enthusiastic viral video (above). Advertisement 'Wait, I'm actually so fascinated by this video. Is this a joke? Did they really give you a raw tomato and a lemon and make you cut it yourself? And why does it sound like you're in a retail store?' one TikTokker asked. 'Not the eyes lighting up at the bite of a seasoned tomato,' someone laughed. 'Girl, I eat this over the sink while my kids scream and throw their lunchables be so fr,' joked another. 'Honestly, the influencer era is so dystopian,' one said. Some people responded in separate posts on TikTok, which also went viral. 'I just watched an influencer get served a tomato, salt and lemon as an appetizer, and she did that wide-eye chewing thing as if she was eating caviar,' user @sarbaaboobear wrote over a video of her looking into the camera. 'I'm so mad rn I can't even explain it.' That reaction video was an even bigger hit than the original, racking up 13.2 million views and 1.3 million likes. Advertisement 'I'm convinced that restaurants are trolling influencers because what is this?' another TikTokker said in a stitched video with 3.7 million views. He then read a five-star review in a so-called 'influencer voice' that said, 'First time cut my own tomato in a restaurant.' Miller has since posted follow-up videos of her eating a tomato and lemon at home 'for her haters' — but people aren't finding them funny. Advertisement 3 She sliced a piece of the tomato, squeezed the lemon on it, then topped it with olive oil, salt and pepper in one of her viral videos (above). @lpmlasvegas/Instagram 'Mama, they ain't making fun of you for eating this, they're making fun of you for paying for this at a fancy restaurant lmao,' someone said. 'She acted like it was a luxurious dish. making big eyes, acting like she never had a tomato. So out of touch with reality. With that influencer voice,' another wrote. 'I thought she was making fun of the original video, only to realize it's her,' one said. Advertisement 'How to destroy your chances of being a likeable influencer 101,' a user added. Meanwhile, a representative for LPM restaurants clarified to that tomato and lemon are served in addition to fresh bread, not in place of it. 3 A representative for LPM restaurants said tomato and lemon are offered alongside fresh bread. LPM Restaurant & Bar Advertisement 'Every guest is welcomed with a complimentary presentation of fresh tomatoes, lemons, our signature olive oil, and salt & pepper in addition to warm baked baguette — a gesture that reflects both generosity and authenticity,' Nicolas Budzynski, LPM's CEO, told the outlet. 'In the tradition of Mediterranean family meals, guests are invited to prepare their own simple tomato salad at the table, and we wanted to create a unique way to reflect that and welcome guests into LPM's home.'
