Marcos gives 50% fare discounts to seniors, PWDs in MRT, LRT
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Wednesday led the launch of the 50% fare discount for senior citizens and persons with disability in LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3. The launch was held at the MRT-3 Santolan-Annapolis southbound station. This followed the launching of the 50% train fare discount for students last June, which aims to fulfill Marcos' directives to ease the financial burden of commuters. Raffy Tulfo urges dedicated booths for students at LRT, MRT stations
Senator Raffy Tulfo has called on the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to put up dedicated booths or lanes for students who will avail of their 50% fare discount at Light Rail Transit (LRT) and Metro Rail Transit (MRT) stations. Tulfo, chair of the Senate Committee on Public Services, said that based on the onsite inspections of his team at certain train stations, some students choose not to get the discount due to the "time-consuming and inconvenient process." The DOTr has increased the fare discount for all students, including those taking up postgraduate studies, from 20% to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3, beginning June 20. To get the discounted rates, students are required to present their valid ID within the current school year. Their tickets must be purchased at the ticket counter to avail of the discounted rates. These are valid for single journey tickets only and not applicable for beep cards and stored value tickets. Upon hearing the students' concerns, Tulfo said separate ticket booths or lanes should be set up exclusively for students, apart from those for senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and regular passengers. He also called on the DOTr to develop a more efficient student verification process that would no longer require manual form-filling, and to make the student discount applicable to beep cards. "The goal of the student fare discount is to make transportation more accessible to learners—not to create new obstacles for them or for other commuters," Tulfo said in a statement. Sought for comment on the matter, Transport Secretary Vince Dizon said he has already instructed the management teams of LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 to put up dedicated student lanes, as advised by the senator. As of Thursday, July 3, Dizon confirmed with GMA News Online that all stations at MRT-3 have already allocated a counter exclusively for students. "All [MRT-3] stations with dedicated student lane. Dizon: DOTr proceeding with gov't plan to privatize MRT3, LRT2 ops
Amid the recent technical glitches which limited the train trips of the Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon on Thursday said the government's is moving forward with its plan to hand over the operations of LRT-2 as well as Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) to the private sector. 'Alam ninyo, hindi ganoon kadaling ayusin itong mga sistemang ito. Ang pangmatagalang solusyon talaga dito ay dapat [privatized] na itong mga sistemang ito kagaya ng LRT-2 at MRT-3. Iyon talaga ang pangmatagalang solusyon dahil habang ang gobyerno ang nag-o-operate nito, limitado tayo ng budget, limitado rin tayo ng ating mga procurement rules. Ibig sabihin niyan, hindi ganoon kabilis ang ability natin na mag-ayos nitong mga sistemang ito kaya iyon talaga ang ultimate solution,' Dizon said at a Palace press briefing. (You should understand that it is not easy to fix these systems. The long term solution should be to privatize systems such as the LRT-2 and MRT-3. That is the long lasting solution because while government is operating these, we are limited by procurement rules. This means we are hampered in our ability to repair these systems so [privatization] is the ultimate solution.) The previous leadership of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) had been vocal about privatizing the operations and maintenance of LRT-2 and MRT-3. The DOTr tapped the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the MRT-3's PPP or public-private partnership plan, and the World Bank's International Finance Corporation for the LRT-2 PPP initiative. 'So, for LRT-2, mayroon tayong planong i-PPP na ito sa susunod na taon. Tinutulungan tayo ng International Finance Cooperation ng World Bank para mabilisan nang ma-PPP ito. Ang MRT-3 naman, tinutulungan tayo ng Asian Development Bank para ma-PPP na rin ito at tuluy-tuloy na rin ang maayos na pag-operate at maintain nitong dalawang luma nang linyang ito,' Dizon said. 'Ang pagkakaalam ko, within [this year] ay masisimulan na natin ang proseso dahil ito ay ibi-bid out natin as a PPP,' he said. ('So, for LRT-2, we have the PPP plan for next year. The International Finance Cooperation of the World Bank is helping us to expedite the PPP. For the MRT-3, the Asian Development Bank is assisting us for the PPP so the operation and maintenance of these two old lines could be improved. As I understand it, we could start bidding out the PPP within this year.) The Transportation chief assured the public that there will be no immediate increase in fares once the two railway systems' operations are taken over by the private sector. 'Hindi ibig sabihin na 'pag nag-PPP tayo ay ganoon-ganoon na lang ang pagtaas ng presyo, dahil ang gobyerno pa rin ang magre-regulate sa fares ng mga train natin, kasama na dito ang LRT-2 at MRT-3, kaya makakaasa parin ang mga kababayan natin na hindi naman ganoon magiging kataas ang magiging pamasahe kahit na maging private na ang operator nitong mga train system na ito,' Dizon said. Marcos okay with PPP scheme to improve LRT ops — Dizon
President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. has agreed to the planned Public-Private Partnership (PPP) scheme for LRT-2, according to the Department of Transportation (DOTr). Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday. LRT-2 back to full line operations after technical problem repaired
The Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2) resumed full operations before noon on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, after a technical problem was repaired. "Balik na sa full line operation ang LRT Line 2 matapos na matagumpay na naisaayos ang problema sa rectifier substation," the Light Rail Transit Authority (LRTA), operator of the LRT-2, said in a post on social media. "May biyahe na mula RECTO STATION hanggang ANTIPOLO STATION at pabalik," it added. LRTA said the free LRT-2 rides on June 25 and 26 previously announced will still be in effect. "Samantala, magpapatuloy ang LIBRENG SAKAY mula ngayong araw hanggang bukas, Hunyo 25, 2025," it said. "Maraming salamat po sa inyong pang-unawa," the LRTA said. The LRT-2 went on degraded operations on Wednesday morning after a technical problem in transformer no. 5 and no. 6 located in Santolan and Anonas areas was detected. During the degraded operations, trains ran only between the Cubao and Recto stations. Free rides via shuttle and buses were offered by LRTA, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, and Philippine Coast Guard to ferry affected passengers. —KG, GMA Integrated News
