Real Madrid dealt Federico Valverde injury blow ahead of Club World Cup

The domestic season may have finished for Real Madrid, but that has not brought an end to their injury problems as they have at least more to deal with in the aftermath of Saturday's 2-0 victory over Real Sociedad. Brahim Diaz is believed to have suffered an adductor issue during the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, but while Real Madrid await the diagnosis on that one, they have revealed another issue problem – and this one is for Federico Valverde. Real Madrid confirm Federico Valverde injury problem As per an official statement (via Marca), Real Madrid have confirmed that Valverde suffered a back injury against La Real. Advertisement 'After the tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid medical services, he has been diagnosed with lumbosciatalgia. Pending evolution.' Image via EFE / Borja Sanchez-Trillo Uruguay international will be fit for Club World Cup Valverde has been ever-present for Real Madrid since last August, aside from a three-week spell when he was struggling with discomfort. He has been expected to be a very important player for new head coach Xabi Alonso in this summer's Club World Cup, and fortunately, he should be fine to play in the opener against Al Hilal on the 18th of June. The report from Marca has stated that Valverde should only be suffering with the injury for about a week, which means that he will be recovered in time to face the Saudi Pro League side at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. It will be very interesting to see how Real Madrid line up against Al Hilal, especially as Alonso is expected to adopt the 3-4-3 system that he has used at Bayer Leverkusen over the last few years. Valverde will be an important part of this tactic, especially as his versatility will allow him to operate in multiple positions if needed.

Aguerd Pushes for West Ham Exit

Nayef Aguerd has dealt Graham Potter an early summer blow by making it clear he has no intention of returning to West Ham. The Moroccan international, currently on loan at Real Sociedad, had been earmarked for a return to the Hammers' squad as part of Potter's cost-conscious rebuild. But with financial constraints looming due to PSR regulations, the defender was seen as a ready-made solution to bolster the backline without dipping into the coffers. Instead, Aguerd has reportedly informed the club he wants out permanently, throwing a spanner in West Ham's transfer plans. The 28-year-old, who cost $40 million from Rennes in 2022, still has two years left on his deal but is eyeing a fresh start elsewhere where he can compete for silverware. West Ham now face the challenge of replacing him in an already thin squad, with exits expected across the board and doubts also surrounding Jean-Clair Todibo's future. Aguerd has been one of the best central defenders in La Liga this season, and because of this, there is bound to be plenty of speculation on his future. In recent weeks, he has been linked to Manchester United, and La Real would also dearly love to be able to retain his services on a permanent basis – and they should have the money to do so, given that Martin Zubimendi is expected to leave the club in the summer, with Arsenal favourites to sign him . However, it is not expected to be easy at all for La Real to retain Aguerd's services, with FootballFanCast stating that West Ham do not have any plans to let their defender leave during the summer transfer window, with new head coach Graham Potter keen to have him in his squad for the start of the 2025-26 Premier League season. Arsenal confident of signing Real Madrid midfield target that Xabi Alonso wants

The repercussions of a subpar season at Real Madrid are often serious, and the same appears set to go down in the Spanish capital after the ongoing campaign. The management is the first department that will be replaced, with Carlo Ancelotti almost certain to face the axe. Xabi Alonso, the Bayer Leverkusen manager, is the best placed candidate to replace him. Advertisement With the new coach, however, arrives a new system and a few new profiles to fit the scheme. Rodra, on that front, provides a big update on a Real Madrid target. Martin Zubimendi could be headed to Arsenal As relayed by the Spanish journalist, Alonso is asking and pushing for the incorporation of Martin Zubimendi, the Real Sociedad midfielder who Real Madrid have been linked with for a long time now. The Basque star has, after all, worked closely with Alonso during the manager's time at the La Real youth team and provides a profile that Real Madrid direly lack in midfield. (Photo by Juan Manuel) There is, however, a major obstacle in that Real Madrid are competing with several Premier League sides for his signing and the finances offered by the English clubs is out of Los Blancos' reach. Advertisement In fact, there are strong rumours that Zubimendi's move to Arsenal is all but done with sources in England and the Basque city confident that his next destination will be London. Alonso's move to Real Madrid gives the team an outside chance, but the player appears to have made his mind. The Gunners, for their part, are confident of landing the 26-year-old Spanish international, who has a €60 million release clause in his contract. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining where Zubimendi ends up, and it is safe to say that the interest from the Merengues will at least raise a doubt in his mind. After all, the train to the Valdebebas passes only once.

Real Sociedad announce Imanol Alguacil replacement

Real Sociedad have wasted no time in replacing Imanol Alguacil, after it was announced that their long-term manager would be departing this summer upon the expiry of his contract. The 53-year-old will leave a long-lasting legacy at the club, following 6.5 years of consistent success. Alguacil will be hoping he can continue his record of qualifying the Txuri-Urdin for European football in every full season in which he has been in charge. With five games to go, La Real sit in 10th spot, but just two points back from Osasuna in a Conference League spot, and four back from Celta Vigo in a Europa League position. Advertisement After a lengthy spell, and a particularly long season, which has proven more difficult than previous years, Alguacil decided against continuing in his post. Girona manager Michel Sanchez and former Spain and Real Madrid coach Julen Lopetegui, who came through the academy at Zubieta, were cited as favourites for the job. Image via Real Soceidad However Real Sociedad have opted for the continuity candidate, and announced on Friday that Sergio Francisco will be taking over. He will pen a contract for two seasons until 2027, after arriving at the club eight years ago. Following five years and a promotion at Real Sociedad C, he is now in his third year at Real Sociedad B, where Relevo say he has been credited with 'doing a brilliant job.' The 46-year-old comes into the job as something of an unknown prospect though, but will be familiar with the tools at his disposal. Francisco played as a forward for La Real briefly, coming through the academy and making his first-team debut in 2000. He would then have a career in the third and fourth tier before retirement. With Real Sociedad B, he has managed a 5th-place finish, a 9th-place finish and is on track to make the play-offs for a second time, with the team in fourth position.

‘Real Madrid don't need this type of help' – Real Sociedad's Imanol Alguacil furious with refereeing

'Real Madrid don't need this type of help' – Real Sociedad's Imanol Alguacil furious with refereeing Real Sociedad exited the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night a month on from being beaten by Manchester United in the Europa League. Manager Imanol Alguacil was similarly irritated by the officiating after both though, noting that Los Blancos have enough talent to win games without the referees helping them. Advertisement The controversy came back to Real Madrid's third goal before extra time, which would eventually end up levelling things up at 4-4 on aggregate courtesy of Mikel Oyarzabal's header in stoppage time. Kylian Mbappe appeared to move towards the ball from an offside position and take Real Sociedad defender Igor Zubeldia with him, before eventually allowing Vinicius Junior to run onto the ball. From the subsequent corner, Aurelien Tchouameni would head home. 'They eliminated us just like they eliminated us in the Europa League, with help in an area that we request is neutral. Real Madrid doesn't need this type of help because they're a big team and they don't need it,' he said defiantly to Relevo. 'It's one of those that they have been giving. I have no doubt that if it was the other way around, it would have been given.' Advertisement La Real captain Mikel Oyarzabal was equally clear about it moments after the match. 'I saw an Mbappe offside, who interferes with the centre-back. I think conditions the decision of Igor [Zubeldia], but the corner is beforehand and that's the way it is,' Oyarzabal added to Sport. Despite his frustration with the referees, Alguacil did dedicate much of his press conference to noting how proud he was of his side. 'I'm happy and proud because two powerful teams put us out,' he remarked on their performances.' Image via Diario AS 'Although no one gave us a chance yesterday, the team has shown that it doesn't lack play, character, or personality. We've done many things well, but we're not in the final. You can leave proud, not having reached a final. Both in the home game and today's, the team far exceeded expectations.' Advertisement There has been no shortage of speculation over Alguacil's future of late, with his contract expiring, and some wondering whether he may walk away after seven successful years. 'Imanol has always wanted to stay at this club. Winning, losing, or drawing won't change Imanol's mind. I'm very clear about what this club is all about, and I want to be here for many years.' La Real travel to Las Palmas next on Sunday, as they try to push for a European spot. With their elimination from the Copa, eighth spot looks as if it will be enough for the Conference League. Real Sociedad currently lie 10th, two points off Rayo Vallecano in seventh.
