Sarawak praised as fertile ground for outstanding workers
Gerawat delivers his speech at the event. – Photo by Ukas KUCHING (May 18): Sarawak continues to be a fertile ground for the growth of outstanding workers, supported by strong state government initiatives and strategic human capital investments, said Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), Datuk Gerawat Gala. He said this during the state-level Labour Day 2025 celebration at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre (HEEC) here today. In his speech, Gerawat, who is also the event's organising chairman, emphasised the critical role Sarawak's workforce plays in the state's economic and social progress. 'We are proud to say that Sarawak continues to be a fertile ground where outstanding workers grow. Whether in energy, agriculture, services, or digital industries, our people are making their mark both locally and globally. 'The government remains committed to creating an enabling environment—through infrastructure, education, training institutions, upskilling programmes, and strategic investments—that allows every worker to thrive,' he said. Labour Day was officially recognised as a national holiday in Malaysia in 1972, marking a commitment to upholding workers' rights. Gerawat, however, pointed out that in Sarawak, the celebration holds deeper meaning due to the vital role of workers in sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing, which power the state's economy. 'Our workers are innovators, builders, caregivers, educators, and entrepreneurs, with each playing a vital role in driving our economy and shaping Sarawak's future,' he added. This year's Labour Day celebration was historic as it was the first time the event was held at the state level and jointly organised by both state and federal government agencies, along with workers and employers' representatives. Themed 'Pekerja Cemerlang Sarawak Maju Makmur' or 'Outstanding Workers Foster a Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak,' the event highlighted the value and aspirations tied to human capital development in the state. Gerawat noted that the theme reflects the belief that Sarawak's development is rooted in the excellence of its people. 'The term 'Pekerja Cemerlang' or 'Outstanding Workers' is not limited to technical expertise or job performance alone. It refers to individuals across all sectors, whether private or public, who go beyond their duties, demonstrating professionalism, innovation, teamwork, discipline, and an unrelenting commitment to self-improvement. 'These are the individuals who inspire others, lead by example, and strive every day to do better,' he said. In line with this, Gerawat highlighted several amendments to the Sarawak Labour Ordinance (SLO), which came into effect on May 1 this year and marked a significant milestone in the state government's commitment to a fair and forward-looking labour ecosystem. 'These reforms are not just legal updates, as they reflect our values as a state that honours dignity in work, protects workers, and prioritises social justice. 'We believe that a balanced approach, where both employers and employees are supported, will lead to greater stability, motivation, and long-term productivity,' he said, while thanking Abang Johari for his strong support in making the amendments possible, describing it as the best Labour Day present for Sarawak workers. Malaysia Worker's Anthem 'Solidariti Perjuangan' Inspires Labour Day Spirit, But Why Does It Sound So Familiar?
Subscribe to our FREE A new anthem dedicated to all the workers in Malaysia became the focus of the national Labour Day 2025 celebrations at the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) on 1 May. Penned by human resources minister Steven Sim Chee Keong and performed by the KESUMA choir, Solidariti Perjuangan 's uplifting tempo and inspirational lyrics moved even Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar called for the song to be played not only at the minsitry, but also across all government ministries, 'This is more than just a song, it speaks to the soul. It stirs the spirit of workers and reminds us of the sincerity and dignity of labour. I want the song to resonate in every ministry,' he said in his speech. Meanwhile, communications minister Datuk Fahmid Fadzil announced that all local television and radio stations have been instructed to play Solidariti Perjuangan as a tribute to Malaysian workers. A new song that sounds all too familiar If you've just listened to the song, or have already heard it, you might think you have heard this song before. That's because you most likely already have, if you're a fan of football. Solidariti Perjuangan's melody sounds like the world's most recognisable football team's song 'Glory Glory Man United'. Note for note, the worker's anthem sounds exactly like the Manchester United football club song and chant. Interestingly, the football team borrowed the tune from another historic musical piece called ' This is a famous American patriotic song written by abolitionist Julia Ward Howe during the American Civil War. This hymn is filled with Christian imagery and references to divine justice as it equates the Civil War struggle with a holy mission, calling for sacrifice and persistence against slavery in America. In the early 20th century, the melody was used for 'Solidarity Forever', a popular American trade union anthem written by labour activist Ralph Chaplin in 1915. According to the fact sheet of KESUMA's Solidariti Perjuangan on the song, they acknowledged it was an adaptation of Chaplin's 'After 113 years, now the song 'Solidarity Forever' has a Bahasa Melayu version titled 'Solidariti Perjuangan' to express the commitment of Malaysia's workers' unions to fight for the wellbeing of all employees in this country,' Bernama reported. Not original, but not far from the core message Solidariti Perjuangan may have borrowed its tune from a song dating back to the American Civil War, but if you think about it, the anthem carries the same message of dignity, appreciation, and respect towards common workers. The song acknowledges the hard work of people who have, poured their blood, sweat and tears to the betterment of the nation in every possible way. Labour Day celebration: 10,000 expected at Axiata Arena
KUALA LUMPUR: Over 10,000 workers from both the public and private sectors are expected to attend Thursday's national-level Labour Day 2025 celebration at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil, which Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will officially launch. The event, which brings together representatives from trade unions, statutory bodies, as well as public and private sector organisations, serves as a platform to honour workers' contributions in driving national development in line with the Malaysia Madani agenda. Themed 'Pekerja Kesuma Bangsa', this year's celebration recognises the vital role of workers as the backbone of the country and key implementers of the aspirations of sustainability, justice and well-being. At the event, the Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver a special address and launch the Madani Worker Card initiative along with the MyFutureJobs mobile application. Anwar will also present the Labour Day Awards to celebrate the achievements of outstanding workers, employers, trade unions and media representatives, including two new categories introduced by the Human Resource Ministry, namely the National Public Service Worker Icon Award (Senior Management) and the Best Media Agency Award.
