Rahul Gandhi hails Karnataka's gig workers' welfare ordinance

Bengaluru/New Delhi: Congress MP and opposition leader in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, Thursday lauded the state govt's decision to promulgate an ordinance establishing a social security board for platform-based gig workers, calling it a "historic step" that reflects the party's vision for workers' rights across the country. Referring to slogans he heard during his nationwide march, Rahul, in a post on X, said: "'Rating nahi, haq chaahiye'. 'Insaan hai hum, ghulaam nahi'. These powerful words from gig workers stayed with me during the Bharat Jodo Yatra." He went on to say: "Our Congress govt in Karnataka has taken a historic step by issuing an ordinance that guarantees rights, dignity, and protection to gig workers... These workers bring us food, deliver essentials, and drive us safely — in the heat, cold, and rain." Pointing to exploitative conditions gig workers face, he said: "Yet, they are too often blocked from their apps without explanation, denied sick leave, and paid according to opaque algorithms. We are changing that." Rahul said the new ordinance ensures social security, fair contracts, transparency in algorithmic pay, and an end to arbitrary blocking. "This is how technology should serve people — driving innovation and justice. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Rajasthan showed the way. Karnataka has acted. Telangana is next." In Bengaluru, Karnataka labour minister Santosh Lad expressed gratitude to governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot for swiftly approving the ordinance, and credited Rahul for bringing the issue to the forefront. After leading a delegation of gig workers to felicitate the governor, Lad said: "Today, the vision of our leader Rahul Gandhi has been realised. We thank the governor for passing the ordinance within a day of it being sent to Raj Bhavan. " He said platforms which use services of gig workers to "further their profits" must consider the welfare of these employees "who inhale carbon dioxide day in and day out". "I am not going to blame anyone, but it is important to consider the social security of these workers," he said. However, while praising Gehlot for his prompt action, Lad also criticised Raj Bhavan over delays in approving other bills. "It is only in non-BJP governed states that Raj Bhavans withhold assent for bills," Lad said. "In BJP-governed states such actions are unheard of. Our youngsters need to understand the consequences of such actions, why there is a debate on Article 142 in the country and why courts are intervening in such matters. " The ordinance paves the way for the establishment of a Gig Workers Welfare Board, expected to be a first-of-its-kind step towards regulating platform-based work and providing structured protection to lakhs of delivery partners, drivers, and other on-demand workers in the state.

Man duped by Insta friend with promise of cheaper iPhones from Dubai

A hmedabad: A 31-year-old man from Ghatlodia was cheated of Rs 1.66 lakh, allegedly by a woman he met on Instagram. She promised to provide him with iPhones from Dubai at low prices. The man, who runs an eyewear business from home, came into contact with a woman named Priyanka Lad from Dubai around three years ago. After meeting on Instagram, they started interacting on WhatsApp. Lad claimed that she would be visiting Ahmedabad soon and could bring mobile phones at cheaper rates from Dubai. The victim asked her to bring two iPhones. Later, Lad requested him to make a payment of Rs 6,000 for a grocery bill in Mumbai, stating she needed to carry the items to Dubai and would adjust the amount against the payment for the phones. He agreed and paid the bill. Following this, Lad demanded Rs 40,000 as an advance for the phones. She later claimed discounts would be available if the phones were purchased using a credit card in Mumbai and convinced the man to let her use his credit card. She made a purchase of Rs 35,000, followed by another transaction of Rs 82,000 for a laptop. In total, the man paid Rs 1.66 lakh for mobile accessories, a laptop, and groceries. When he asked about the phones, Lad sent a courier receipt and claimed the parcel was sent. However, upon visiting the courier firm's office in Naro, he was informed that while the name and address on the parcel were correct, the mobile number was wrong. The parcel was returned to the sender. Attempts to reach Lad failed as her Instagram account was deleted. On WhatsApp, she told the man not to contact her again. Sola police registered a case of breach of trust and cheating against Lad and began an investigation.

Permanent solution for problems caused by Bennihalla soon: Minister

Navalgund (Dharwad): Bennihalla and Tupparihalla flowing in Dharwad district have the notorious sobriquet of 'streams of sorrow' as they wreak havoc during heavy rains. Successive governments have talked about chalking out plans to ensure that the streams cease to cause damage but nothing concrete has been done to relieve the people from suffering due to flooding. During monsoon, around 56 villages surrounding the streams live on the edge. Now Santosh Lad, minister in-charge of Dharwad district, has again assured of putting an end to the perennial problem in next two years. "An essential plan for flood control and effective water utilisation in the two major streams of Dharwad district — Bennihalla and Tupparihalla — has been prepared. The government has already released an initial amount of Rs 200 crore to implement permanent solutions," said Lad during his visit to Bennihalla stream near Yamanaur in Navalgund taluk on Wednesday. Bennihalla affects 56 villages across six taluks in Dharwad, Gadag, and Haveri districts. It flows for about 148km through these three districts and covers a watershed area of around 4,800sqkm, the minister said. In 2012, irrigation expert Dr GS Paramashivayya had submitted a study report on flood control and effective water usage of Tupparihalla and Bennihalla, which the government has reviewed. Based on that, the project is being implemented, he added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! IC Markets Start Now Undo The tender for the project is in its final stage, and work will commence after the monsoon ends, the minister said. He said developmental works for the benefit of the public and tourists will also be taken up near the Yamanur bridge. As Bennihalla and Tupparihalla streams converge in Navalgund taluk and flow into Gadag district, flood risk is significant. To manage flood situations, the minister directed the formation of 10 dedicated teams for emergency readiness. MLA NH Konaraddi said the chief minister has promised to provide necessary funds for a permanent solution to the problems caused by flooding in Bennihalla. Due to the seriousness of the monsoon, the work will start soon. An estimated Rs 1,600 crore is required for the flood control and efficient water usage projects of Bennihalla and Tupparihalla. A request will be made through Union Minister Pralhad Joshi to secure funding from the union government, Konaraddi added. Mock Drill A mock drill was conducted at Neelammana Kere in Navalgund town to demonstrate how to rescue people during flood situations and drowning incidents as part of public safety preparedness.

Accordingly, visits were made to Benne Halla and Tuppari Halla areas today. The desilting work, announced in the budget at a cost of Rs 200 crore, will begin after the tender process is completed. Property survey not done properly, says Minister Lad

Pointing out the huge difference in the number of houses having power supply collection and the number of properties in the twin cities of Hubballi-Dharwad, Labour Minister Santosh Lad has directed the authorities to synchronise the data and stop revenue pilferage. Chairing review meetings of the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation (HDMC) and the Hubballi-Dharwad Urban Development Authority (HDUDA) in Dharwad on Tuesday, Mr. Lad said that it was evident that all the properties had not been brought under the tax net in the twin cities and said that a survey on the properties had not been done in a comprehensive manner. Emphasising the need for proper tax collection, he said that over 45,000 illegal, unauthorised sites have been developed and sold. Providing basic amenities to such residential layouts had become a problematic issue, which should be sorted out at the earliest. There should also be an extensive awareness campaign on tax collection, he said. 'The municipal corporation has given a total of 2,474 assets on long-term lease several years ago. It has come to light that several of them have been leased out to others and a few even sold to third parties. It should be thoroughly investigated and suitable action taken,' he said. Taking strong exception to the sale of five-gunta farmland around the twin cities, he said that as it was unauthorised it should be immediately stopped. 'It is illegal to convert fertile farmland into residential five gunta plots and sell them. This is going to create problems in the coming days and should be addressed immediately through joint action of department of registration and survey and local bodies,' he said. Mentioning that demand for introducing OTS (One Time Settlement) for the pending water bills worth ₹149 crore was being considered, he asked the municipal authorities to send a requisite proposal. Pointing towards unauthorised paying guest facilities in the twin cities, the Minister directed the zonal assistant commissioners of the twelve zones of HDMC to conduct survey on PG facilities in the twin cities and collect information on the number of occupants, permissions taken, the facilities provided, taxes paid and to check whether they were paying commercial rates for water and drinking water usage. Those violating the norms should be issued notices immediately, he said. Intervening in the discussion, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J. said that there was provision for cancellation of registration of sale deeds if the agricultural land was being used for non-agricultural activities and action could be taken. She also assured of constituting a joint committee to prevent unauthorised layouts in the district.
