Published on: Thursday, July 31, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jul 31, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: William and Winceslaus in a group photo while showing the promotional posters for the run. TAWAU: The Tawau Chinese Chamber of Commerce (CCCT) welcomed the collaboration with Sri Pelancongan Sabah Sdn Bhd to support the upcoming Tropical Rainforest Run 2025, expected to take place this November at the District Hills Park. CCCT Vice President William Tan said the chamber is fully committed to supporting the event, which he believes will help boost the local economy and enhance Tawau's public image. He said CCCT has always been committed to working closely with the government and related agencies to develop the tourism sector and local economic growth. 'Tawau's rich natural landscape and cultural diversity provide a strong foundation for eco-tourism and sports tourism in the district. 'Tawau is not only home to one of the world's rare tropical rainforests, but also known for its warm, friendly and kind-hearted people,' he said. He encouraged the public to support the Tropical Rainforest Run 2025 as an opportunity for every Tawau resident to become an ambassador for the district. Tan said this during a courtesy visit from a delegation from Sri Pelancongan Sabah, led by Senior Manager for Event Operations Winceslaus Gerald Autine. The group also included Event Operations Executive Jacklos Masingkop and Sales & Marketing Manager Pius Lee. Also present were CCCT Treasurer Alex Chua and Committee Member Khor Chung Chung. Meanwhile, Chua urged local business owners to take part in the event by setting up stalls, sponsoring activities, or organising exhibitions during the programme. He believes such events offer an effective platform for branding and corporate visibility, while creating a win-win ecosystem for all stakeholders involved. Sri Pelancongan Sabah expects this year's Tropical Rainforest Run to be held on a larger scale, with higher participation from international runners, thanks to earlier preparations. They also emphasised that the event is not just a sports activity, but also a key platform to showcase Sabah's ecological treasures and cultural richness to a wider audience. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tawau has strong medical tourism potential: Nizam
Published on: Tuesday, July 22, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 22, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: Nizam (centre) witnessing the MoU signing ceremony TAWAU: Tawau has strong potential to emerge as a medical tourism hub in Borneo, thanks to its strategic location bordering Indonesia and its proximity to Kalimantan, the future administrative capital of the country. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan, said Tawau could serve not only as a gateway for trade and investment but also as a promising destination for medical tourism. 'We are in a position to offer high-quality medical treatment at competitive costs, which in turn can stimulate the local economy,' he told reporters after officiating the launch of the Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Services at KMI Tawau Medical Centre on Saturday. The event also saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between KMI Tawau Medical Centre and Rusleeya Healthcare Sdn. Bhd. The MoU was signed by KMI Tawau General Manager Zainulalim Samsudin and Rusleeya Healthcare Medical Director Dr Rusli Rolon. The services under the partnership will include comprehensive health screenings for workers and compliance with occupational safety and health regulations in Malaysia. Nizam said the strategic collaboration between the two companies is expected to strengthen the occupational health sector and pave the way for expanding medical tourism in the region. 'In addition to improving the quality of healthcare for local workers, we believe there is great potential to attract international patients, especially from Kalimantan and other parts of Southeast Asia,' he said. He said the partnership combines the expertise of both organisations and could serve as a high-impact model of private sector collaboration in providing inclusive, modern, and tourism-oriented healthcare services. Nizam expressed confidence that such initiatives could elevate Tawau into one of the leading health destinations in the Borneo region. He called for similar partnerships to be expanded across other areas in Sabah and the Borneo region to ensure the benefits of the private healthcare sector are more widely felt, while simultaneously positioning Tawau as a preferred centre for medical treatment in the region. For the record, KMI Tawau Medical Centre is part of the renowned KMI Healthcare network, known for its modern facilities and high-quality services. The centre will now collaborate with Rusleeya Healthcare, a specialist provider of mobile audiometry and spirometry testing, to deliver comprehensive and accessible OSH services. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Stop building traffic roundabouts: Justin
Published on: Friday, July 18, 2025 Published on: Fri, Jul 18, 2025 By: Lagatah Toyos Text Size: According to Wong, the project received objections from more than 7,000 Tawau residents who signed a petition launched in March. TAWAU: Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong again urged the Government to stop construction of traffic roundabouts along Jalan Sin Onn. He said the plan to build two roundabouts was shortsighted and dismissive of public opinion. Advertisement 'This project risks worsening traffic congestion and contradicts the principle of putting people first,' he said, adding it failed to consider the long-term interests of the community. Wong, instead, called for Jalan Sin Onn to be upgraded into a dual carriageway, which he said would bring genuine long-term development to the area and surrounding neighbourhoods. 'I appeal to the Ministry of Finance to reconsider and upgrade the road to a dual carriageway,' he said, questioning why that option was not chosen. He said the project appears one-sided and short-term in nature, potentially slowing down traffic flow in key areas such as Pasar Sin On, nearby residential zones, supermarkets and commercial lots. He also raised safety concerns, pointing out that one of the roundabouts is being built next to SJK (C) Hing Hwa, which could pose risks to schoolchildren and parents. According to Wong, the project received objections from more than 7,000 Tawau residents who signed a petition launched in March. The signatures were collected over three weeks and submitted to the State Government and Public Works Department (JKR), but the project still went ahead. 'I even held discussions with JKR, but they couldn't guarantee that traffic would improve after the roundabouts are built. Nor could they confirm whether the risk of accidents would increase,' he said. The roundabouts are part of the Whiterose City development project, approved by JKR on April 29, 2022. The plan included roundabout construction based on a Traffic Impact Assessment (TIA) report, which has yet to be made public. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
