Sajid Ali On Casting Avinash Tiwary And Triptii Dimri In Laila Majnu: ‘We Needed Rawness, Not Stardom'

Director Sajid Ali reveals why he cast Triptii Dimri and Avinash Tiwary in Laila Majnu, praising their rawness and chemistry born from surrendering to chaos. When Laila Majnu first released in 2018, it quietly etched itself into the hearts of audiences who longed for stories of mad, unfiltered love. Over the years, the film has grown into a cult favourite — a cinematic poem about passion, rebellion, and heartbreak. Directed by Sajid Ali and starring Avinash Tiwary and Triptii Dimri, the film recently saw a triumphant re-release in 2024, reaffirming its emotional grip on viewers. Reflecting on the film's casting and what made it stand out, director Sajid Ali has now opened up about why he chose two relative newcomers to embody such iconic roles. 'We knew right from the start that we needed fresh faces — people who could completely disappear into the characters without the baggage of stardom," Sajid reveals. 'But even then, we didn't expect the process to take so long. We auditioned close to a thousand actors over a span of years. It was exhaustive, but we weren't willing to settle. We were looking for a certain rawness, a certain honesty." The exhaustive casting process eventually led them to Avinash Tiwary, whose performance as the tormented lover Qais (Majnu) left an indelible mark. 'Avinash had this quiet intensity," says Sajid. 'When he performed, you could feel something bubbling just beneath the surface — he had the emotional range and physicality we needed for someone who would eventually become 'Majnu'. His transformation felt real, not performed." Triptii Dimri, who played the fiercely independent Laila, brought a contrasting energy to the screen — one that complemented Avinash's restraint. 'Triptii, on the other hand, brought spontaneity, freshness, and a sharp emotional intelligence," Sajid recalls. 'She didn't over-rehearse, and that's what made her performance so alive. Often her first take would be the one we kept. She understood Laila's contradictions — her impulsiveness, her rebellion, her vulnerability — with incredible instinct." What stood out the most for the filmmaker was the chemistry that bloomed naturally between the two leads. 'Together, they created something beautiful and tragic," Sajid says. 'Their chemistry was born not from trying to be romantic, but from surrendering to the characters' inner chaos." Following its recent re-release, Laila Majnu has once again found a loyal audience — those drawn to stories that don't sugarcoat love, but rather portray it in all its messy, aching glory. With its powerful performances, raw direction, and haunting narrative, the film reminds us that love — especially the kind that consumes — may not be easy, but it's always worth it. Meet actress whose bold, intimate scenes in this film left her sister worried, movie became a hit, earned Rs..., actress is...

Sometimes, when actresses end up doing bold intimate scenes, they gain unprecedented fame and name. However, the dark side of this fame is that these stars often get stereotyped for a particular role. Interestingly, Bollywood has an actress who, though she did a bold role and some jaw-dropping intimate scenes, was never typecast. In fact, she broke all the norms and played diverse characters in her other projects. This Actress Did Bold Intimate Scenes The actress we are talking about is someone who started her career with a thriller, only to move on to classic sad-romance. She did horror movies, comedy, period psychological dramas, and what not. If you are wondering who this actress is, then let us tell you—we are talking about none other than Triptii Dimri. Triptii started her journey in 2017 with the film Mom, which featured the late iconic actress Sridevi. In the following years, she worked in movies like Laila Majnu, Bulbbul, Qala, and more. When Triptii Dimri's Sister Was Worried Due to Her Intimate Scenes Triptii Dimri also featured in Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal. Her chemistry with Ranbir Kapoor was loved by the audience. However, there were certain bold scenes that made Triptii even more famous than before. A drawback of those bold scenes was the shady comments that filled Triptii's social media accounts. Reading all those comments left her sister worried. In an interview with the YouTube channel Too Filmy, Triptii said, 'After a lot of bad comments, I stopped watching it. She (Triptii's sister) used to read every comment till late at night and then get stressed. She understood that it will eventually affect. She said—no matter what you do good, people will talk about it. Do what you believe in.' Triptii recalled her tough time and said, 'I got the support of good friends. My sister was always with me. When I could not clear the audition, I used to call her crying, and she would say—you have to keep doing this. Don't listen to the noise, don't listen to relatives or people around. Just keep doing it and see if it works for you or not. If you are not happy, then this is the time when you step back.' Coming to Triptii's work front, the actress will be seen in Dhadak 2.
