Hazy and cooler Sunday leads to a summer-like start to the work week!

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — We are keeping the cooler weather with us today, but don't be discouraged, as there is a warm-up in the forecast ahead! Overnight lows were a bit chilly, leading to a cooler start with temperatures into the upper 30s to low 40s area-wide. We had a beautiful sunrise thanks to some lingering wildfire smoke from the Canadian wildfires to our northwest. Today will be similar to Saturday, we still see the wildfire smoke in the sky, but it is higher in the atmosphere, which means we will see better air quality overall. Temperatures will remain on the cooler side as the sun can't warm us because of the smoky conditions aloft. Daytime highs get into the upper 60s to low 70s, which is still below average for this time of year. Don't be too upset about the cooler weather, because we will see a warm-up as we head into the upcoming work week. Daytime highs for Monday will reach the upper 70s to low 80s, with even warmer conditions into Tuesday with temps into the mid to upper 80s area-wide! Both days feature sunshine and a little bit of humidity, so as we kick off astronomical summer, we will surely feel like it as well. By Tuesday night into Wednesday, a cold front moves in and stalls, allowing for multiple chances of showers and storms. Heavier rain is possible through Wednesday and Thursday, and we could see anywhere between an inch to maybe two or more inches of rain, which could lead to some localized flooding. Keep an eye on the forecast as we iron out the details heading into the upcoming work week! Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. 19-year-old woman arrested after shooting leaves 2 injured at Michigan mall

A 19-year-old woman was arrested in connection with a shooting at a mall in Michigan that injured two people, according to police. The Meridian Township Police Department said the shooting occurred on Friday, May 30, at the Meridian Mall in Okemos, around 7 miles from Lansing. Officers responded to the area after receiving reports of gunfire in the parking lot near Dick's Sporting Goods. Those involved fled the area before the police arrived, according to the department. Two people suffered gunshot wounds as a result of the incident, the department said. Officers later identified and interviewed the involved individuals at a local hospital. Following the interviews, officers took the 19-year-old woman from Lansing into custody, police said. Police did not share what possible charges the unidentified woman could face. The conditions of the two injured individuals are unclear. USA TODAY contacted Meridian Township police on May 31 but has not received a response. Now the police are asking for the public's assistance in finding the vehicles believed to be involved in the shooting, including a burgundy sedan, possibly a Chrysler 300 or Toyota Camry with dark-tinted windows and dark colored rims, and a black sedan, possibly a Chevy Malibu with tinted windows. Once police secured the area, they said, "There is no threat to the public at this time." The mall has also since reopened for business, according to the department. Police said the investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information regarding this incident can call the Meridian Township Police Department at 517-853-4800. MSU hosts cybersecurity conference

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Be careful who you talk to online. That's one of the key takeaways from a cybersecurity conference held at Michigan State University Friday. 'Cybercrime is a huge problem that affects virtually everyone in society, whether you know it or not, there is data breaches that you might not even be aware of where your data is compromised, but there's computer hacks that compromise your computer,' Tom Holt, a professor in Criminal Justice at MSU. 'There's cyber stalking, there's harassment, there's all kinds of sexual offenses and interpersonal crimes. Really, anything that happens in physical space.' The goal of the event was to inform and educate business owners, city officials, and law enforcement about the potential dangers they could face online. The event comes after the Ingham County Sheriff's office recently reported an uptick in cyber crimes. 'To talk about different kinds of cybercrime, different strategies for cybersecurity, and to share some of the more cutting-edge research that's happening so people can take things back to their agencies or their organizations and do different work,' said Holt. Holt says criminals online will target anyone. 'As an example, you might see seniors being more susceptible to certain kinds of fraud because they may have a lack of understanding or knowledge, they may be a little more lonely or a little more willing to answer friend requests, but that's true,' said Holt. 'People on dating apps and any other place where you're interacting with people who you don't know.' Participants at today's conference told 6 News they wanted to learn how to protect themselves and the community. 'Cybercrime, the biggest concern is scale, right? Everybody can be accessed through their phone, through their computer, and so whether or not you're careful with your information can be really important, because even if they access your devices, if you have proper encryption or proper safety precautions, then it's a lot harder for them to get at your actual information,' said Dr. Fisher, an associate researcher with a focus on cybersecurity at MSU. To fight back against cybercrime, Dr. Fischer has some tips. 'People know to use strong passwords, they know not to click on links that come from people they don't know. But the important thing is, is not to give over any information, and even if you do find yourself in a conversation with someone that you think is a scam,' says Dr. Fischer. 'Hammer not giving up that personal information or giving any personal details, and it can really help kind of cut them off'. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
