Lansing police arrest 9 during drug investigation Tuesday night

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Lansing police are now confirming officers made nine arrests during what was called a 'drug investigation' Tuesday night on the 1500 block of South Pennsylvania. At this time, police are not releasing the names of those they arrested or what charges they might be facing other than 'drug-related charges.' Tuesday night, 6 News saw dozens of officers from both the Lansing Police Department and Michigan State Police at the home and saw them detain three people. Lansing police did arrest a man matching the description of a man wanted on a bench warrant for failure to appear in court for a previous misdemeanor, court documents show. According to a court document obtained by 6 News, officers were watching the home on the corner of Pennsylvania and Baker 'in an undercover capacity' when they recognized Paul Mollett. Mollett is identified as the man wanted on the outstanding warrant. Mollett was seen riding a bike near the intersection of Christiancy St & Linval St, which is about half a mile from the home on Pennsylvania, according to documents. Police made contact and arrested Mollett and took him to the Lansing jail on the warrant. During what police called a 'prisoner search,' officers say they found a white bag in a jacket pocket. In the court document, police say inside the bag was .08 grams of meth. It was identified through a TruNarc test, according to police. Mollett was scheduled to be arraigned in district court Wednesday afternoon. The house in question on Pennsylvania has two apartments inside, one on the first floor and one on the second floor. 6 News observed that all the windows on the first-floor apartment had blackout curtains, and by Wednesday afternoon, both of the apartments were red-tagged by code compliance officials. City records reveal that the rental certification for the address expired on March 15, 2025. After police left the scene, at least half a dozen people entered the second-floor apartment of the building. A spokesperson with the Lansing Police Department tells 6 News that this was not part of an investigation into human trafficking or any specific missing person. Neighbors told 6 News the house saw a lot of traffic at all hours of the day, foot and vehicle, and that many loud noises have come from the property. One neighbor said they witnessed two men fighting with 'machetes.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Lansing Police issued no citations related to dragway rally

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Despite a large police presence during Friday's rally to support Sloan's Onondaga Dragway, no tickets for reckless driving or street racing were issued. Lansing Police Department spokeswoman Jordan Gulkis tells 6 News, 'There were no tickets given Friday night related to street racing or reckless driving.' An estimated 75 cars and 100 people gathered at Everett Plaza to protest a Thursday decision by Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie Aquafina. The decision shutters the raceway, located about 20 minutes south of Lansing, indefinitely. 6 News was on scene when Lansing Police ordered the gathering to break up. Multiple, at least three, police vehicles swept north through the lot to push vehicles and people out through the north drive of the plaza. Overhead, a drone announced that people needed to leave the area. Sloan's had invited street racers to come to Onondaga, where they could race legally the day before his track was shut down by court order. His offer was in response to a deadly crash on April 24. That crash left a 15-year-old male dead and sent 12 others to a local hospital. As officers were clearing the Plaza, officers initiated a traffic stop 'in the same block,' Gulkis tells 6 News. That traffic stop was completed a few blocks south on Mason St. Police tell 6 News a male was taken into custody during that traffic stop, and a firearm was recovered from the vehicle. Gulkis says the department cannot confirm if the car driver was 'officially a part' of the protest in Everett Plaza. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Rally for the reopening of the Onondaga Dragway broken up by police

UPDATE: This story has been updated with the correct cross streets of Everett Plaza, and details on the traffic stop conducted during the clearing of the plaza. LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — The day after 6 News reported that the was to race legally in the wake of a in Lansing, a judge ordered it to . Friday night, drivers rallied on the south side of the city, calling for the track to reopen—and police later broke it up. Participants were allowed to gather at Everett Plaza, just south of Holmes Rd. on Cedar St. for over an hour and half. But when the noise from some vehicles became too loud police moved in from the south directing people to leave and pushing the rally participant's vehicles to an exit on the north end of the parking lot. Overhead, a drone directed participants to leave the area, while occasionally shining a light down on the parking lot. At its peak, 6 News observed an estimated 75 vehicles and 100 people gathered at Everett Plaza. A flyer made the rounds on social media earlier this week, calling the gathering the 'Cedar St. Street Race,' an event to 'raise awareness about the dangers of street racing and promote safer alternatives,' calling for the reopening of the Onondaga Dragway. The tagline? 'Let's bring racing back to the track!' In late April, police say two each other down S Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. near Pierce Rd. caused a five-vehicle crash that sent 13 people to the hospital, eventually resulting in the death of a 15-year-old passenger who was inside one of the racing vehicles. The crash caused around the city of Lansing from residents and city officials alike, who are currently trying to find a way to crack down on illegal street racing in the area. Willie Sloan, owner of the Sloan Onondaga Dragway, offered his own solution, down to the track Wednesday, offering up a space for them to race legally. Thursday, the day after 6 News spoke to Sloan, Ingham County Circuit Court Judge Rosemarie E. Aquilina track to close immediately—and indefinitely. That order was the result of a by Onondaga Township resident Rebecca Lindsey, who claims the track is a nuisance because of the amount of noise and vibrations it causes. The judge agreed. The Lansing Police Department told 6 News earlier Friday they were aware of the event and planned to later that night to crack down on potential reckless driving. 6 News on the scene saw City Council President Ryan Kost at the event, as well as Farhan Shiekh-Omar, one of the city's police commissioners. As LPD officers were working to clear the rally goers from the lot, those police vehicles suddenly sped out of the lot. 6 News watched as the police units at Everett Plaza sped out of the parking lot with lights and sirens on, joining other units that appeared to be pursuing someone south on Cedar Rd. Around 8 police cars were seen. Additional units arrived to continue clearing the parking lot. Within a block of Everett Plaza, 6 News saw police had pulled over one car just north of the intersection of Holmes Rd. and Cedar St. Another car was also stopped by police at the intersection of Mason St. and Cedar St. shortly after midnight. Police tell 6 News the stop on Mason St. near Cedar St. resulted in one male being taken into custody and a firearm being recovered from the vehicle. Police have not confirmed why these cars were pulled over, or if they were involved in Friday night's rally. This is a developing story. ‘There will be serious consequences': Lansing mayor says about street racing crash

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Lansing Mayor Andy Schor is speaking out about Thursday night's that left 13 people injured, including a child. According to police, the drivers of two vehicles were speeding while racing each other southbound on MLK Jr. Blvd. when another driver made a lawful turn from Pierce Rd. onto MLK Jr. Blvd. This led to the speeding drivers hitting the turning vehicle, followed by those three vehicles colliding with two other vehicles. During the crash, two people from one of the speeding vehicles were ejected. These are the two unnamed people who are in critical condition, police say. Street racing crash injured 13 people, including child, Lansing police say Less than a day later, the mayor says those involved will be held accountable. I am angry that these selfish, reckless drivers created an unsafe situation that led to such a horrible accident on S MLK, inflicting so much harm to innocent bystanders. Chief Backus and I have talked several times today about last evening. The parties involved have been identified and there will be serious consequences for the harm they caused. The Lansing Police Department will recommend all charges possible, as found by the evidence, to the Prosecutor to hold those responsible accountable. The Chief and I have also talked about having extra patrols on the road, especially in hot spot areas. LPD has several recruits in the academy now, so we will have more officers on the streets soon. And in my budget recommendation to Council, I have called for adding more officers using funding from the state Public Safety Trust Fund once it is signed into have 100,000 calls per year and our police cannot be on all of our 400 miles of streets to catch speeders, so I am supportive of using red light cameras to catch excessive speeders. But cities are prevented from doing this by state law. I know legislation has been proposed, and I hope the Legislature will review those bills for consideration. Many cities across the country use them very successfully to hold careless drivers accountable for their actions and allow officers to respond to calls at the same time. LPD officers are the best in the state, but they are a very busy department and we need every tool and resource from the state to help. Andy Schor, Lansing Mayor Police closed all roads in the area of the crash overnight for the investigation and reopened them around 4 a.m. Friday. Police are not releasing any names of those involved at this time, or who or how many people were in each vehicle, including the child. Police are also not confirming the condition of the other 11 people involved in this crash. As of 9:30 a.m., no one has been arrested, according to police, and it is unknown if anyone has been ticketed.
