Las Vegas Sphere to screen 'The Wizard of Oz' in the immersive venue's first film experience

The Las Vegas Sphere will soon screen 1939's "The Wizard of Oz" in the immersive event venue's first film experience. The project places viewers inside the world of Oz using the Sphere's 160,000-square-foot wraparound screen. The film will play in 16k resolution with full spatial audio using 167,000 speakers and haptic seating, according to a June press release. In a partnership with Google Cloud, engineers used AI "outpainting" to expand the original film frames to fit the immersive space, according to an April press release. "Our standard on this was not to modify the film at all, but to try and bring you into as if you were in the studio when it was shot," James Dolan, Sphere Entertainment CEO, told CBS Sunday Morning. Glenn Derry, MSG Ventures executive vice president and visual effects artist, is in charge of the 4D effects, such as motion, wind, water and scent, to make audiences feel like they are in Oz, CBS reported. Derry told CBS Sunday Morning his team used technology to bring in fog and wind effects to mimic tornadoes that are seen in the movie. "The Wizard of Oz" experience opens to the public on Aug. 28. The Las Vegas Sphere opened in September 2023 and has a capacity of roughly 20,000. About 10,000 of the seats in the arena have haptic technology, according to Sphere Entertainment. The venue has garnered attention since its opening for impressive live concerts and unique visuals.

Metallica Might Be Planning A 2026 Las Vegas Sphere Residency

SANTA CLARA, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 20: (L-R) James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich of Metallica perform at ... More Levi's Stadium on June 20, 2025 in Santa Clara, California. (Photo by) A recent report by Vital Vegas suggests that Metallica might be eyeing a fall 2026 residency at the Las Vegas Sphere. According to the website, Metallica could be joining the ranks of U2, Dead & Company, Phish, Anyma, The Eagles, Kenny Chesney, Backstreet Boys and Zac Brown Band, who've all performed at the mystifying Las Vegas venue. While there's not much evidence the website provides to back up these rumors, Vital Vegas notes, 'our sources have been spot on with other Sphere news, and we even broke the story 'Wizard of Oz' would get a reboot there.' Metallica is slated to kick off their 2026 M72 World Tour in the late spring, which will conclude in the early summer on July 5th, 2026. In theory, a fall 2026 residency wouldn't conflict with the band's touring schedule for next year, or at least not any of Metallica's plans that have been made public. Drummer Lars Ulrich did recently suggest that Metallica does have 'one or two other things that may pop up' when discussing the band's plans for the rest of the year. Back in April, guitarist Kirk Hammett was also asked by The Hollywood Reporter if Metallica would ever be interested in performing at the Sphere, to which he replied 'Oh, heck, yeah! That's a great example of how venues are changing. That's using modern technology to the fullest, to really up the levels of production and entertainment, connected to A.I. and making it a crazy experience.' Metallica Playing The Sphere Is Inevitable While there's been no confirmation by Metallica and no official details released regarding a Metallica Las Vegas residency, fans can expect The Sphere to be on Metallica's bucket list. As the first and only band to perform on all seven continents (yes, including Antarctica), Metallica are no strangers to seeking out unique performance opportunities. In fact, knowing Metallica and their eagerness to be on the cutting edge of live concert experiences, it's more surprising the band hasn't already played the Las Vegas Sphere – Metallica jumped to the forefront of Apple's Immersive Video initiative this year with their first ever Apple Vision Pro concert. It'll be no surprise when Metallica announces they're hosting a residency at the iconic Las Vegas venue, and when it does eventually happen it'll likely be one of the most sought-after gigs of the band's career.

Las Vegas Sphere tickets: Performances, experiences, and prices

One of the hottest and most talked about entertainment spaces of 2025 in Las Vegas is the Sphere at the Venetian Resort, also known as the Las Vegas Sphere or just the Sphere. With its 580,000 square feet of LED displays, it would be hard to miss the gargantuan structure, easily visible from both the ground and sky when visiting the bustling Las Vegas downtown area. Since opening in 2023, the Las Vegas Sphere has been home to various events, ranging from unique experiences to live performances. The first attraction to grace the location was a U2 residency in September of 2023, which featured a 40-performance concert series at the Sphere lasting until March 2, 2024. The remainder of this year sees a variety of events scheduled at the Sphere, set to keep guests of all ages satisfied. Legendary bands like Eagles and the Backstreet Boys, and the combination visual-live performance event Insomniac x Tomorrowland: UNITY, will take the stage for live musical artists this year. In addition to music, guests can come and enjoy visual immersive experiences as well, with the 2025 schedule including Darren Aronofsky's Postcard from Earth, V-U2 An Immersive Concert Film, and The Wizard of Oz at Sphere. How to buy Las Vegas Sphere tickets Original tickets for events at the Las Vegas Sphere are available for purchase on Ticketmaster. Depending on the event, date, and seating location, ticket availability can vary. As the summer kicks off and people travel to Vegas for vacation, it is expected that certain dates, such as weekends or popular evening times, may have more limited remaining availability. Tickets are also available from verified resale vendors such as StubHub and Vivid Seats for both concerts at the Sphere and its visual experience-based events. Please check the above chart for event-specific links to both StubHub and Vivid Seats. How much are Las Vegas Sphere tickets? Ticket prices for events at the Las Vegas Sphere vary depending on the event itself, the date, as well as the demand for each show. There are two types of event categories at the Sphere: Sphere experiences and Sphere live performances. Experiences, in general, have multiple showings in a day, and thus have more ticket availability, which has some effect on pricing in terms of demand. Live performances are typically more exclusive, as there are limited showings and the events are usually held over a smaller range of dates. Currently, original tickets from Ticketmaster and resale vendor tickets from StubHub and Vivid Seats are very similar in price. However, there may be some fluctuation when looking for last-minute tickets, especially to Sphere experiences (V-U2, The Wizard of Oz, and Postcard From Earth). The least expensive Sphere tickets are for the Insomniac X Tomorrowland: UNITY live experience, which starts at $47 on StubHub and $45 on Vivid Seats. Tickets for the Eagles are priced the most expensive at the Sphere, with the most affordable options starting at $335 on StubHub and $349 on Vivid Seats. These prices are before additional taxes and fees. Who is performing at the Las Vegas Sphere? The Las Vegas Sphere boasts its versatility, able to host both cinematic experiences as well as live music. 2025 has seen a busy schedule so far, and the remainder of the year will be no different. Backstreet Boys currently have 21 shows scheduled at the Sphere from July 11 through August 24 as part of their Into the Millennium concert series. Word on the street is the supergroup will jam out to a setlist of their classic hits, perfect for those visiting Vegas who want to be sure they're going to enjoy a high-energy pop-filled evening. From August 29 to October 18, Insomniac x Tomorrowland: UNITY will take place, with nine shows scheduled as of writing. This event is a mix of both immersive visuals and artwork, all culminating with a performance to finish out the experience from a renowned artist. UNITY calls itself more than a concert, quoted as being a 'transformative journey through music, storytelling, and technology'. So far, the opening weekend performers have been announced, with Chase & Status scheduled for August 29, Kaskade on August 30, and Eli Brown hitting the stage on August 31. The performers for the remaining event dates are scheduled to be announced at a later time. Eagles will take the Sphere stage from September 5 to November 8, with 12 shows remaining for their concert series, Eagles: Live in Concert at Sphere, which originally began on September 20, 2024. At the time of completion, the series will have totalled 44 performances.

Featured pricing is subject to change. There's no place like home Sin City. Las Vegas Sphere just announced 'The Wizard of Oz at Sphere' is coming to the iconic venue for an extended run starting Aug. 28. The immersive experience will take audience members to dusty sepia-toned Kansas with Dorothy and Toto before heading to the vibrant technicolor Munchkinland, poppy fields and Emerald City at all screenings by employing wraparound 360° visuals, vibrating haptic seats, environmental effects and custom scents that bring the film's original 4:3 aspect ratio to Sphere's 160,000 sq. foot and 16K resolution screen. Advertisement 'Imagine what it would be like to be in a tornado in the Sphere where you've got wind coming at you, you've got scents coming at you, you've got leaves coming at you, your hair is flying all over, you feel as though you are in that tornado with Dorothy, and that's what it's all about,' Sphere President Jennifer Koester told The Hollywood Reporter. 'You're not going to watch a movie, you are going to live a movie. You're going to feel it, to see it, to touch it, to smell it.' This one-of-a-kind spectacle was constructed using the original 1939 film and source material like schematics, set plans and scores to create an approximately 75-minute cinematic experience that maintains the integrity of the classic motion picture while bringing it to life in a wholly new and groundbreaking way. As proof of the scale ahead of 'Oz's' Sphere premiere, the venue unveiled a larger-than-life installation where it appears the massive event space crash-landed on the Wicked Witch of the East. Her 50-foot-long legs and 22-foot-tall ruby slippers are paired with a display on the Exosphere featuring the iconic scene where Dorothy's farmhouse nosedives out of a twister and onto the Wicked Witch as seen in this gobsmacking Instagram Reel. Should you find yourself on the Strip, the legs are on display to the general public outside Sphere at the time of publication. If you can't wait to get somewhere over the rainbow, tickets are available for purchase for all upcoming 'Wizard of Oz at Sphere' screenings on sites like Vivid Seats. Advertisement Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand. They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event. 'The Wizard of Oz at Sphere' schedule Once 'The Wizard of Oz' begins its Sphere stint, you can catch Judy Garland and co. seven days a week for the foreseeable future — although Oz goes dark on select dates. Matinees start at 10 or 11 a.m. depending on the day of the week; afternoon screenings go down at 1, 2 and 5 p.m. Evening showings start at 8 p.m. Advertisement To find the show that makes the most sense for you, a complete 'Wizard of Oz at Sphere' calendar that goes all the way to March 2026 can be found here. Other Las Vegas Sphere shows When Dorothy, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion and Scarecrow aren't skipping down Sphere's Yellow Brick Road, you can catch Academy Award-nominated director Darren Aronofsky's ambitious immersive film 'Postcard From Earth' or U2's 'V-U2' concert film at the jaw-dropping venue on most nights. Both paved the way for 'Wizard of Oz' at Sphere. That's not all, though. These next few weeks, country superstar Kenny Chesney has a handful of shows lined up at Sphere. Advertisement Then, come July, Backstreet Boys kick off a 21-concert run that runs until Aug. 24. After that, UNITY, an exciting collaboration between EDM festival Tomorrowland and producer Insomniac will drop beats at nine shows from August through October. Finally, Rock Hall of Famers The Eagles wrap their long-running residency at Sphere with a dozen shows from September through November. If you're planning a Las Vegas trip and don't know what show makes the most sense for your schedule (or wallet), you can find a complete calendar of all events at Sphere here. 'Wicked' on Broadway East Coasters who want their 'Oz' fix can catch the long-running musical 'Wicked' at the Gershwin Theatre on Broadway. Wondering if a touring version of the show is headed to a theater near you? Check out 'Wicked's' complete schedule here. About the Wicked Witch's legs While the Wicked Witch's gams appear to have magically materialized under Sphere seemingly overnight, quite a bit of work went into them. According to a press release, designers spent 500 hours printing, building and assembling the 690-pound behemoth that has be held down by 8,000 pounds worth of sand bags to hold the installation in place. They were created using 1,000 yards of specialty fabric made of a polyester-Oxford cloth combination. Advertisement Ten people inflated and installed the legs, which took four hours (breakdown takes four hours as well). For scale, the 22-foot ruby red slippers are 29x the size of a woman's size six shoe. You won't find those at Steve Madden. Huge Las Vegas residencies Curious what other shows are going down in the Entertainment Capital of the World these next few months?
