SUPP Bawang Assan committed to supporting community through frequent mobile services
Lau (right) provides an explanation to an elderly man during the mobile service. SIBU (June 1): The Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch aims to enhance the frequency of its mobile services to better connect with and support the community. Its chairman Kevin Lau said that aside from addressing public concerns and feedback regarding council matters, road conditions or drainage issues, the mobile service also helps with applications for the Kenyalang Gold Card and Senior Citizen Health Benefits. 'I think every time when we offer mobile services, we always obtain quite good responses from those who seek out these services. So, we will try to do it as frequently as possible as part of our service to the people,' he told The Borneo Post when met during the mobile service at a coffee shop here yesterday. He added that as the Sarawak government has been implementing various forms of assistance, they will also explore ways to enhance support for this application. 'The key point we want to emphasise is that it is essential for everyone to register for Sarawak ID and S Pay Global, as it is very likely that all future assistance will be channelled through these applications.' Lau mentioned yesterday's mobile service was very meaningful, as it coincided with the Dragon Boat Festival. 'Today (May 31), we will be distributing about 100 dumplings to the public as a gesture of our well wishes to them. 'I think what is even more important is to commemorate the deep meaning of this celebration. The Dragon Boat Festival has always been about promoting unity,' he said, adding that the Gawai Dayak celebration was a similar occasion. 'We want to spread this message especially in our society. We are delighted to have a harmonious society in Sarawak, where people of all ethnicities interact and mingle well. 'We hold mutual respect and always practice tolerance, nurturing a closer-knit community with a more unified stance, which has become a part of our Sarawak culture,' he said. bawang assan Kevin Lau mobile services SUPP

Art Hong Kong Expo: Cultural leaders rally to promote HK's global hub vision
In this file photo dated Dec 19, 2024, artists from Guizhou province perform folk dances during the 'Night of Colorful Guizhou' session at the second Art Hong Kong Expo. - Provided to China Daily HONG KONG: Hong Kong enjoys ample strategic determination, as well as a global profile, together with enough policy and talent support to be a frontrunner of the future culture and creative industry, cultural pundits and government officials said on Friday (May 30). The remarks sparked ovations at a cross-boundary exchange session during a forum on Hong Kong's international cultural and creative industry, a highlight of the third edition of the Art Hong Kong Expo, which opened on Friday at AsiaWorld-Expo near the international airport. The four-day expo showcases the city's burgeoning culture and creative industries in a kaleidoscope of themes, ranging from cultural industry integration, digital cultural tourism, and low-altitude economy, to gaming and e-sports, digital creativity, international culture, Hong Kong-mainland culture exchange, intangible cultural heritage, and national trend cultural creativity. Addressing the forum, Raistlin Lau Chun, Hong Kong's undersecretary for culture, sports and tourism, underscored the city's resolve to elevate local characteristic brands such as 'Hong Kong Culture', 'Hong Kong Design' and 'Hong Kong Manufacturing', while strengthening ties with the Chinese mainland and international industry to help step up Hong Kong industrial players' influence in broader markets. 'My bureau will work hand-in-hand with the industry, leveraging government resources to better support creative projects that exhibit big industrial potential,' noted Lau. Recognising creative industries as the city's new economic booster, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government promulgated the Blueprint for Arts and Culture and Creative Industries Development in 2024, aiming to turbocharge the city's establishment of a conducive industry ecosystem and as a platform for international arts and cultural exchanges. Two dedicated government funding programmes — the Film Development Fund for moviemakers and the CreateSmart Initiative for other creative sectors — have respectively approved a cumulative total of over HK$1.3 billion ($165.7 million) and about $3.4 billion in funding that benefited more than 120 film projects and 30,000 enterprises since their establishment, according to the 2025-26 budget. Ding Wei, deputy general manager of the Bauhinia Culture Holdings Limited — the expo's advisor — highlighted Hong Kong's strategic strength as both a 'cultural reception room' for Chinese civilization to engage with the globe and a 'crucial pivot' where international creative resources converge. 'Hong Kong's highly open economic system, international financial platforms, and strong business networks, made it deeply integrated with the global creative ecosystem,' noted Ding. 'This is where Eastern and Western cultures interact and merge, where tradition and modernity shine in mutual glamour.' John Howkins, a leading mover in the global development of creative economies, who is also program leader and academic advisor at the University of Hong Kong's Institute for China Business, added an optimistic note. Hong Kong's greatest asset lies in its free flow of creative talents, said Howkins. He noted that true creativity thrives on free exchange of ideas, and being a regional transport hub with world-class universities offering high-quality programs in the field, Hong Kong is advantageously positioned to attract top faculty and students who can contribute to its creative landscape. - China Daily/ANN

Sibu Chinese leaders' association's 20th anniversary, 11th committee installation set for June 8
SIBU (May 31): The Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association will celebrate its 20th Anniversary and the installation of its 11th Committee with a banquet on June 8 at 7pm at Kingwood Hotel. Its president, Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau, at a press conference yesterday, announced that Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian will be the guest of honour for the evening. He said the association has extended invitations to all government departments it collaborates with in fulfilling its responsibilities to the community., as well as all Sibu elected representatives. 'We anticipate having approximately 90 tables. We are still waiting for confirmation from some of the guests invited to the celebration. 'We hope that this celebration, in a way, serves to honour those who founded the association and to acknowledge their contributions. 'Additionally, it should serve as motivation for current leaders to aim for improved, more effective performance or contributions to benefit our community,' Lau said. He said that one of the goals is to foster stronger ties between community leaders and the association with the public. To enhance accessibility, Lau noted that the association has launched both a Facebook page and a website, allowing the public to easily identify and reach out to their respective community leaders. 'In the past, we received feedback from individuals who were unaware of the local community leaders in their areas. Therefore, I believe it should now be quite easy to reach out to the community leaders in the area. 'This celebration also serves as a means to promote awareness on what the Chinese community leaders are doing,' he said. He added that a short video will be screened during the celebration to showcase the association's journey and achievements, alongside various stage performances. The event, originally scheduled for last year, was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Lau also addressed a minor issue encountered during the association's recent Annual General Meeting (AGM), where some individuals were inadvertently excluded from joining the new committee. 'It's unfortunate, and we are hopeful and optimistic that community leaders will continue to be as active and cooperative as they have been in the past. 'Our collective goal is to serve the community to the best of our abilities. We trust that any differences that may arise can be resolved. People shouldn't take it personally. 'And, you know, we need everyone, all community leaders, to collaborate, for the good of the community and the people in our society. 'As you know, community leaders act as a bridge between the government and the people. We'd like to see that we are able to perform this role effectively. So, it requires the cooperation of all the community leaders, to work together. 'Even though we have different political beliefs, different ideologies, we should not let that affect our unity and cooperation,' he said. Earlier, Lau mentioned that the association also works closely with both the District and Resident Offices on events requiring its support.
