Proteas women fall to India to miss out on Tri-Series final
The Proteas women were knocked out of the ODI Tri-Series following a 23-run loss against India in Colombo on Wednesday. Chasing a commanding 338 runs to win, the Proteas struggled without star opening batter and captain Laura Wolvaardt, who missed out due to illness. After the early loss of Lara Goodall (4) before a much-needed 63-run stand between Tazmin Brits (26) and debutant Miane Smit (39). All-rounder Annerie Dercksen brought up her maiden ODI half-century as she made a solid 81 off 80 balls before she was bowled by Amanjot Kaur (3/59). The Proteas' middle-order put on a courageous display with the bat as Nondumiso Shangase (36), Sinalo Jafta (21) and Nadine de Klerk (22*) made some handy contributions. However, the task seemed too tall for South Africa despite stand-in skipper Chloe Tryon finding form. Tryon smashed five sixes and four boundaries to score 67 off 43 balls but fell in the final over and put an abrupt end to South Africa's chances. 🚨 MATCH RESULT 🚨 An outstanding fight from the Proteas Women in this thrilling run chase! 🏏🔥 A phenomenal display of skill and determination to stay in contention in the Tri-Nations Series 🏆. Unfortunately, the result didn't go our way — but it was a performance to be… — Proteas Women (@ProteasWomenCSA) May 7, 2025 Half-centuries by Annerie Dercksen and stand-in captain Chloe Tryon gave the Proteas some glimmer of hope in an otherwise one-sided ODI affair. Earlier on, a century by Jemimah Rodrigues took the game away from the Proteas after South Africa won the toss and sent them in to bat first. Jemimah Rodrigues was in sublime form, sharing a 88-run stand with opener Smriti Mandhana (51) and Deepti Sharma (93). Rodrigues brought up her maiden ODI century as she scored 123 off 101 balls (hitting 15 fours and a six) before she was caught off Masabata Klaas (2/51). The Proteas clawed their way back in the final 10 overs of the game but India had advantage as they captalised on a good Colombo track. Despite the loss, the Proteas will play their final ODI against hosts Sri Lanka on Friday in Colombo (06:30 SA time). This means, Sri Lanka will now host India in Sunday's final. India 337-9 in 50 (Rodrigues 123, Deepti 93, Klaas 2/51, De Klerk 2/54) South Africa 314-7 in 50 (Dercksen 81, Tryon 67, Amanjot 3/59, Deepti 2/57)

Proteas Women aim to adapt better to heat for India clash in Colombo

Photo: Cricket South Africa Image: Cricket South Africa The scorching heat in Colombo has tested the Proteas Women's team at length, and there have been a few players who have found themselves ill as a result. The 17-year-old wicket-keeper batter Karabo Meso could not keep on Friday during the third match of the ongoing Tri-Series against hosts Sri Lanka. Proteas all-rounder Nadine de Klerk believes that the heat has played a factor in their two consecutive losses in the series. 'It's extremely hot. I think also batting first and then having to come out and field after lunch is never easy, especially in these conditions,' said De Klerk. 'We didn't have a lot of runs on the board, so we had to put in a really big shift, and unfortunately, we couldn't get over the line. 'We know it's going to be hot, it's not going to change, so I guess it's just about taking the learning from these last two games, and see how we can get better and try to adapt to the heat, because it's not going anywhere.' Apart from the two losses, there have been a number of milestones on tour, including De Klerk becoming only the ninth Proteas Women player to reach the 50-wicket mark in One-Day internationals. De Klerk claimed her 50th ODI career wicket against India Women during the second ODI of the series in tough conditions at the R. Premadasa Stadium. 'You always want to contribute to the side, and as a bowler, you love taking wickets, especially if it's not coming easily,' said De Klerk. 'I think in these conditions, wickets are really hard to come by. It's been a great journey so far, and hopefully it just keeps getting better from here on.

‘No excuses': Proteas women must adapt better to conditions, says Mashimbyi
The SA team were handed their second defeat of the ODI tri-series. Captain Laura Wolvaardt leads the Proteas off the field after their loss to Sri Lanka in Colombo. Picture: Isuru Sameera/Gallo Images The Proteas let themselves down, particularly with the bat, head coach Mandla Mashimbyi admitted after their loss to Sri Lanka in the women's ODI tri-series match in Colombo on Friday. After being sent in to bat, the SA team were restricted to 235/9, and Sri Lanka reached 237/5 with 21 balls to spare to secure a five-wicket victory. The conditions were hot, as they had been in the Proteas' 15-run defeat to India earlier in the week, but Mashimbyi felt they could have adapted better. 'It's obviously a disappointing result for us. I think we let ourselves down with the bat,' Mashimbyi said. 'The conditions weren't that bad, to be honest, and I think we probably didn't play them as well as we should have. 'We always knew it was going to be tough coming here. The heat was on today and you could see the girls suffering, but that's no excuse. I think we could have maximised from a batting point of view. 'There were a couple of times where we actually had good partnerships and we were about to pull the plug, but we lost wickets at crucial times.' Their second defeat left the Proteas languishing at the bottom of the tri-series table with no points. India were top of the standings with four points and hosts Sri Lanka were lying second with two points. Mashimbyi said his side would need to step up next week, with two more games to play against India on Wednesday and Sri Lanka on Friday, as they targeted a spot in the final to be contested next weekend. 'We'll go back to the drawing board and make sure all these small things we've learned from the past two games, we will put them right in the next two games so we can make that final.'
