I-League: Churchill Brothers triumph as AIFF appeals panel knocks Inter Kashi out for second time

Churchill Brothers will be allotted two additional points after Inter Kashi fielded 'ineligible' Mario Barco in their draw against the former champions at Raia Panaji: The I-League title race has taken another turn after the AIFF appeals committee adjudged that Inter Kashi fielded an ineligible player for multiple games in the second leg of the competition. The appeals committee heard an appeal from Churchill Brothers, Namdhari FC and Real Kashmir, and ruled that the re-registration of Mario Barco by Inter Kashi made him an ineligible player. 'The rules do not provide for re-registration for anyone who has been ousted from the season due to a season ending injury/illness,' chairperson of appeals committee Rajesh Tandon said in the order on Saturday. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The appeals committee had earlier rejected Kashi's plea against Namdhari fielding an ineligible player to announce Churchill as champions. Kashi have challenged the decision at the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) where the matter is expected to be decided later this month. In the provisional standings, Churchill had 40 points, a point more than Kashi, while Real Kashmir were third with 37 points. The appeals committee order means Kashi's games where Mario was fielded would result in forfeiture. Churchill will now get two additional points, taking their points tally to an unassailable 42, regardless of the pending appeal before CAS. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo IPL 2025 Winner Prediction: What Greenstone Lobo's Astrology says 'Churchill Brothers, with 42 points, are the undisputed champions,' Churchill said on Tuesday. 'After this order, Churchill's championship win has been affirmed. The I-League trophy will continue to be in Goa. Churchill Brothers are grateful to the judicial bodies as they have rightfully upheld our legitimate claims.' Kashi said they would appeal against the judgement at CAS, just like they have done with the previous order where three points allotted to them by the disciplinary committee were returned to Namdhari by the appeals committee. 'While it is unfortunate that Inter Kashi has to approach CAS yet again for a truly free and fair hearing of the matter, it seems to be the new reality of Indian football. The club is flabbergasted that such simple rules and regulations can be twisted and misinterpreted in such a manner through which the club is now suffering without any fault of its own,' Kashi said in a statement. Poll Should Inter Kashi continue their appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)? Yes, they deserve another hearing. No, the decision should stand. Records suggest that Mario was part of Kashi's initial squad – which included six foreigners -- for the I-League but was later replaced by Matija Babovic due to what was seen as a season-ending injury. The Spanish striker, however, continued to remain contracted with the club and made a return to the team on Feb 26, 2025 since Julen Perez's contract termination during the January transfer window left a vacant foreign spot. According to the order, the federation's competitions department disallowed Kashi from re-registering Mario on Feb 2, insisting that the request did not comply with clause 6.5.7 of the I-League regulations which states that a foreign player can only be replaced by another foreign player in case an injury or illness prevents the player from continuing to play for the rest of the competition or after mutual termination of the contract. Kashi appealed the decision with the AIFF League Committee which said on Feb 15 that a majority of its members were in favour of approving the club's request to add back player Mario Barco. Kashi fielded Mario for their games starting Feb 26 against Rajasthan United. In its order, the appeals committee said there is no power of review available with the League Committee in I-League regulations. 'A power not available in a statute cannot be exercised by a body which itself is a creature of the statute,' the order noted. 'The unlawful inclusion of a foreign player provided Inter Kashi with an unfair advantage over other clubs adhering to the prescribed regulations,' stated the order. 'Such a violation directly undermines the principles of fair play and the integrity of the I-League. Furthermore, not penalising such a violation would encourage resource-wealthy clubs to buy and rotate more foreign players in their squads. This would directly undermine the principles of equity and equal opportunities which has made the I-League one of the most renowned football leagues of this country till now. '

Why chess' inclusion in Esports World Cup could lead to friction with governing body FIDE

Chess is set to make its debut at the Esports World Cup that takes place in July and August this year in Riyadh and will feature some of the top players in the world including Magnus Carlsen, Hikaru Nakamura and Arjun Erigaisi. Here's why it could run into trouble with FIDE, the Lausanne-based governing body. read more FIDE has so far maintained a neutral stance towards the Esports World Cup, which features chess for the first time this year. Image credit: FIDE/Reuters The Esports World Cup is set to host its second edition in the months of July and August, with the event set to take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia once again. The inaugural event last year had featured several popular games such as Call of Duty: Warzone, Apex Legends, Fortnite, EA Sports FC, Counter-Strike 2, etc. with a majority of those getting included in this year's programme as well. What sets the 2025 Esports World Cup apart though is the inclusion of the inclusion of chess, a board game that has been in existence for more than a thousand years whose online version has grown in popularity with the advent of technology and will feature in the upcoming event. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Magnus Carlsen and Hikaru Nakamura, ranked first and second respectively in the world, will be in action at the World Cup, as will Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi – ranked fourth in the world. In other words, the eyes of the chess world will be on the Esports World Cup later this summer, especially with a prize money of $1.5 million for the event that will have a time control of 10 minutes with no increment. And given the fact that it caters primarily to a young audience, the event will be an opportunity for online chess to spread its popularity even further. Chess' inclusion in the Esports World Cup, however, could also lead to complications, including and especially a potential friction with global governing body FIDE Why FIDE might not be happy with chess' inclusion in the Esports World Cup? FIDE has had a long-running feud with Carlsen and Freestyle Chess – which is hosting its inaugural Grand Slam Tour this year – over the usage of the term 'World Championship' – the Lausanne-based world governing body insists it has exclusive rights to that term and has the sole authority of crowning world champions in the sport. The Esports World Cup, however, is a different entity where players compete as part of leading esports organisations such as Gen.G – which had signed Erigaisi in February – and not just as individuals or national teams. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD FIDE is yet to voice concerns regarding the upcoming tournament, but hasn't come out in its support either, thus maintaining neutrality for now. Given it's battles with Freestyle Chess in recent months and the Professional Chess Association in the 1990s though, FIDE's neutrality will remain a cautious one at best.

I-League drama reaches new height: Despite CAS order, AIFF hands over trophy to Churchill Brothers

The All India Football Federation handed the I-League trophy and winners' medals to Churchill Brothers FC Goa in a ceremony on Sunday, only to find out they were prohibited from doing so by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. read more Churchill Brothers FC Goa finished with 40 points from 22 games at the end of the 2024-25 I-League season, one more than the second-placed Inter Kashi. Image credit: Instagram/churchillbrothersfcgoa The All India Football Federation (AIFF) found itself in an embarrassing situation after handing over the I-League trophy and winners' medals to Churchill Brothers FC Goa on Sunday despite an order from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) prohibiting them from doing so. The governing body for Indian football stated that they were not made aware of the CAS order due to a holiday in the AIFF Secretariat, and got to know about it only after the ceremony had already taken place in Goa on Sunday. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'The AIFF would like to clarify that, with regard to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) order, due to a holiday in the AIFF Secretariat, the federation was only informed of the order at a time when the ceremony had already concluded in Goa,' read a statement from the AIFF. More from Football 'The AIFF remains committed to adhering to all regulatory and legal processes and will take appropriate action,' it added. The Lausanne-based CAS had barred the AIFF from declaring a winner in the 2024-25 season, which had concluded on 6 April, or conducting a medal ceremony until the ongoing arbitration involving Inter Kashi is resolved. 'The All India Football Federation is ordered not to declare the winner of the I-League 2024/2025 or organise a medal ceremony for the I-League 2024-25 until the present arbitration has been concluded,' Elizabeth Steiner, the Deputy President of CAS' Appeals Arbitration Division, said in a statement. Why Inter Kashi have filed an appeal before CAS Churchill Brothers had finished with 40 points from 22 games at the end of the season, one more than Inter Kashi, and were set to join the Indian Super League (ISL) – the top division of Indian football – by virtue of being the I-League champion. Inter Kashi, however, had played a game against Namdhari FC in which their opponents collected a 2-0 win while reportedly fielding an ineligible player. Kashi appealed against Namdhari fielding Brazilian forward Cledson Carvalho da Silva despite picking up four yellow cards prior to the game, which should have resulted in his suspension. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Namdhari thus were docked the three points they had collected following their victory, which were awarded to Kashi. Things, however, started getting complicated for all parties involved after Namdhari appealed against the decision before the Delhi-based governing body, claiming Cledson was fielded as the 'AIFF CMS portal did not show the player was banned for the game". Thus the 3-0 victory that was awarded to Inter Kashi due to Namdhari FC's 'forfeiture' as a result of fielding an ineligible player was put on hold until the AIFF arrived at a final decision. Kashi have since welcomed CAS' order putting a hold to Churchill Brothers' celebrations. Should the final verdict come out in their favour, Kashi will finish with 42 points to their name instead of 39 and will lift the trophy and book their ISL ticket as a result. 'Inter Kashi eagerly awaits a truly free and fair hearing of the matter at the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and maintains that the case involves a simple interpretation of rules and regulations based on some undisputed facts,' the club based in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi said in a statement. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The AIFF as well as Churchill Brothers and Namdhari FC have been granted time until Tuesday, 29 April to file a full reply to Inter Kashi's application for provisional measures, according to CAS.

Cas upholds Algerian appeal in row over map of Morocco

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) has upheld an appeal by the Algerian Football Federation (Faf) against the decision to allow a Moroccan club to wear a shirt with an extended map of the country. The Confederation of African Football (Caf) had approved RS Berkane's kit to be worn in continental competition despite the fact the map included the disputed territory of Western Sahara. The design is seen as a political provocation in Algeria, and caused a row which saw both legs of last season's Caf Confederation Cup semi-final tie between Berkane and Algerian club USM Alger called off. A Caf disciplinary committee awarded Berkane two 3-0 victories, and Caf subsequently dismissed an appeal from USM Alger. The Algerian club and Faf took the case to Cas, which has ruled that the shirts are contrary to Caf regulations and the laws of world governing body Fifa and annulled the decision by the Caf appeals body to maintain the approval of the shirts. USM Alger hailed a "well-deserved victory" that "enhances the team's rights and supports the principles of sports justice" in a post on social media. Caf has been contacted for comment. Match off after row over map of Morocco on shirt Second football game called off in Morocco map row Cas determined that the extended map on Berkane's shirt depicts "a message, a demonstration or propaganda of a political nature" as it represents "the assertion of a territorial dispute that is contested and still unresolved". The Lausanne-based body also stated that, under Caf's regulations and Fifa laws, it is prohibited to convey any content of a political nature on all equipment. The Cas decision included the assertion that Caf "is bound to respect and implement the duty of political neutrality". The decision will have no bearing on the outcome of the 2023-24 Confederation Cup, which was won by Egyptian club Zamalek after Berkane received their walkover to the final. USM Alger and Berkane could meet again in the semi-finals of this season's competition. Algeria and Morocco share a nearly 2,000 km (1,242 miles) border, which has been a source of tension since independence from French colonial rule. Diplomatic relations between the two countries are also frosty and the long-running dispute about Western Sahara, a sparsely-populated territory annexed by Morocco in 1975, has also strained relations. Its indigenous Sahrawi people, led by the Polisario Front and with a government in exile in Algeria, mounted a 16-year-long insurgency that ended with a United Nations-brokered truce in 1991. The extended map of Morocco including the territory of Western Sahara does not correspond to official cartography of the country as published by the UN. Berkane had their shirts confiscated by customs officials on arrival in Algeria for the first leg of their Confederation Cup clash last April and refused to wear an alternative shirt. USM Alger declined to take to the pitch in the second leg in Morocco. The extended map has also caused issues in other sports, as Algeria withdrew from the Arab Youth Handball Championship last year because the Moroccan side were "wearing shirts with political connotations".
