Mussolini's great-grandson hopes skills on pitch outweigh family name
July 23 (Reuters) - Defender Romano Floriani Mussolini, the great-grandson of Italian fascist dictator Benito Mussolini, said he wants his footballing talent to mean more than his family name as he readies for a Serie A debut with promoted side Cremonese. The 22-year-old right back, on loan from Lazio, joined Cremonese earlier this month after the club earned promotion to the Italian top flight via the Serie B playoffs. "I'm here to play football. My surname? It has bothered others more than it's ever bothered me. It's a heavy name for others, but not for me," Floriani Mussolini told a press conference on Wednesday. "The less it's talked about, the better. I'm here to express myself on the pitch, nothing else... I want to gain valuable experience in Serie A, go up against more experienced players, and play as much as possible to showcase my abilities." Floriani Mussolini is the son of Mauro Floriani and Italian politician Alessandra Mussolini, a former member of the European Parliament for the Forza Italia party and the grand-daughter of Benito Mussolini, who was prime minister of Italy from 1922 to 1943 following a fascist coup. Floriani Mussolini, who can also play as a winger, made 37 appearances for Juve Stabia last season, who lost to Cremonese in the semi-finals of the playoffs. He joined the Lazio youth academy at the age of 13 from rivals AS Roma. "The match against Lazio will be special, it's the team I grew up with and support," he added. "But right now I'm focused on giving my all for Cremonese, and I want to win that one." Cremonese begin their Serie A campaign away to AC Milan on August 23.

Maduka Okoye handed two-month suspension for match-fixing
The Nigerian Udinese goalkeeper is punished for deliberately earning a yellow card during a match. Maduka Okoye Maduka Okoye has been handed a two-month suspension on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, for his involvement in a match-fixing betting scandal. The Nigerian goalkeeper for Udinese Calcio was found guilty of deliberately earning a yellow card during a match against Lazio as part of a rigged betting scheme. The 25-year-old player was suspended for two months by the Italian federal court following an investigation into cheating in a Serie A match. On March 11, 2024, during an away game at Lazio, Maduka Okoye received a yellow card in the 64th minute for time-wasting. While the incident appeared routine, it triggered an inquiry after an abnormal spike in bets specifically targeting that booking. Investigators discovered that a close friend of Okoye, who owns a pizzeria in Udine, wagered on the yellow card and pocketed over 120,000 euros. The case was prosecuted by the federal prosecutor's office, which established that Maduka Okoye and his associates had an arrangement to influence the course of the match. Initially facing a possible four-year ban, the goalkeeper ultimately received a two-month suspension, starting from the first official match of the 2025-2026 season. He will be eligible to return to action from October 19.

Create Account Gascoigne was rushed to hospital by his driver and assistant Steve Foster, who found the 58-year-old in a semi-conscious state in his Dorset house. 'Paul is in hospital, which is the best possible place for him to be right now,' Foster told The Sun newspaper. Gascoigne was reportedly admitted to an intensive care ward after being discovered on Friday, but later moved to an acute medical unit, where his condition is said to be stable. Foster said Gascoigne would 'like to thank everyone for the support he's received so far from so many old friends who wish him well and want to see him back to his best.' One of the most naturally gifted footballers of his generation, Gascoigne played for Newcastle, Tottenham, Lazio, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton. He was capped 57 times by England, becoming a global star after his brilliant form at the 1990 World Cup in Italy reached a tearful crescendo with his emotional reaction to a yellow card, which would have ruled him out of the final, in a last four loss against West Germany. Gascoigne also starred for England during their run to the Euro 96 semi-finals, where they again lost to Germany on penalties. The midfielder's issues with alcohol addiction and depression are well-documented and he has suffered a series of health problems in recent years. In 2020, Gascoigne said he had turned his life around after having anti-alcohol pellets sewn into his stomach. But last year, he admitted on the High Performance podcast that he was a 'sad drunk' living in a spare room at the home of his agent. Toronto & GTA Canada Football Toronto & GTA Editorial Cartoons
