Baseball: Ohtani's homer, 2 RBIs not enough for Dodgers against Mets
LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Shohei Ohtani had a home run and two RBIs, but it was not enough for the Los Angeles Dodgers to avoid a 4-3 loss to the New York Mets in 10 innings on Monday. The Japanese star tied for the Major League Baseball home run lead with his 23rd of the season, a solo moon shot into the opposing bullpen at Dodger Stadium that cut the home team's deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh. Ohtani made it 2-2 with two out in the ninth when he scored Tommy Edman with a sacrifice fly, sending the game to extra innings. The Mets were able to seal victory in the series opener after adding two more runs in the top of the 10th.

Kyle Tucker exits early with a finger injury as the Chicago Cubs take the series from the Cincinnati Reds
It may have been one of the most intriguing caught-stealing outs this season. In the first inning of the Cubs' 7-3 victory over Cincinnati on Sunday, right fielder Kyle Tucker was nicked in the foot by a Nick Martinez pitch but had to wait a few minutes before heading to first base as the replays confirmed the contact. He then tried to steal second and was gunned out for the first time in 17 tries this season by Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson. Tucker came out of the game after four innings with a jammed right ring finger, which he suffered on that headfirst slide into second base in the first inning. It also caused a cut above his nose. Manager Craig Counsell proclaimed Tucker 'day-to-day.' The right fielder, who has played in all 59 games for the Cubs, is hopeful he will answer the bell for No. 60 on Tuesday, when the Cubs visit Washington. 'It's just a little jam, there,' Tucker said. 'There is a little swelling. Obviously, we have an off day (Monday) and I hope it's better when we get to Washington.' The play was also noteworthy because it was the first time since Sept. 11, 2023, that Tucker was caught stealing. He had 29 straight swipes in that span. Even with the sore digit, Tucker belted a pitch to right field in the third inning with his eyes on a triple, but the ball got stuck in the ivy and was ruled a double. Still, it ignited a four-run rally, which helped the team finish a homestand with a 5-1 record. The Cubs (37-22) have gone 14-4 since May 11. 'I tried to grind through the at-bats after that,' Tucker said. 'It kind of felt weird. I came out and we got some X-rays and they are fine.' Tucker also was hit by a pitch in the elbow in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Reds. 'You get beat up playing sports, it's no big deal,' Tucker said. 'It's just a part of it and I hope I can get back in there.' Pete Crow-Armstrong had three hits, three runs and two stolen bases while Michael Busch had two hits, including a home run into the wind, and three RBIs as the Cubs took the series in front of a packed house of 40,178 at Wrigley Field. Tucker was a prized offseason acquisition in a December trade with the Houston Astros and is on a one-year deal signed in January. He's been an important cog in a Cubs offense that entered Sunday's game second in Major League Baseball with 334 runs. Winning pitcher Jameson Taillon (5-3) gave up two runs in 6 1/3 innings and admired that the Cubs were able to play strong even without knowing the severity of Tucker's injury. 'He's a great player and we need him out there,' Taillon said of Tucker. 'But we have a long lineup and guys who can fill in if needed. 'We have such a professional group, and we have guys who have been around so long that there was no panic. Just keep your head down and do your job. If we need to weather the storm, we can.' Taillon continues his mastery at Wrigley Field, where he has a 2.70 ERA at home as opposed to 4.96 on the road. 'There could be something weather-related,' Counsell said. '(Taillon's) biggest strength is that he is an elite strike thrower. He's always among the league leaders in walk rates. He is capable, more than most, of taking advantage of favorable weather conditions. 'All of these are small adds. But he's certainly capable of taking advantage of it.' After Monday's off day, the Cubs embark on a stretch of 26 games in 27 days playing Washington, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Seattle, St. Louis and Houston. Counsell said the depth of the team will be tested. 'Look, you're still going to see the regulars out there most days but there will be some days when (reserves Jon) Berti and (Vidal) Bruján will be in there.' A Shota Imanaga bobblehead was the giveaway on Sunday and the honoree had a few pregame throws before boarding a flight to Arizona to get some work in while he is mending from a left hamstring strain. Counsell said Imanaga will throw live in Arizona and will pitch in multiple rehab games before returning. 'We have to build up volume as days tick off the calendar,' Counsell said. 'We want to bring him back in a place where he is ready to be himself.' Imanaga was 1-1 in four starts with a 4.50 ERA before going on the injured list on May 5. Pitcher Tyson Miller, who is on the 60-day injured list with a left oblique strain, threw 35 pitches over 1 1/3 innings for Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, giving up two hits while walking two and striking out one.

Shohei Ohtani Begins Throwing Offspeed Pitches As Return Inches Closer
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers made history when they signed Shohei Ohtani to a 10-year, $700 million contract, yet the two-way superstar has yet to toe the rubber for the Dodgers. This will all change later this season, as according to Ohtani has begun to throw sliders and curveballs in his bullpen sessions during his pitching progression. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 17: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts before the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Stadium on May 17, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - MAY 17: Shohei Ohtani #17 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts before the game against the Los Angeles Angels at Dodger Stadium on May 17, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. Photo byOhtani began to throw breaking pitches in his bullpen session for the first time since he began his return from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2023. Ohtani has been throwing two bullpens a week, one lighter during the week before a heavier, more intense session on Saturdays, according to Sonja Chen. The Dodgers have expressed that the superstar needs to be throwing his entire pitch mix before he begins to face live hitters. There was no timeline as of Thursday for the star's return to action, but many expect it to come after the All-Star break. Ohtani faced a setback in his return to pitching when he suffered an injury to his left shoulder late last season and the Dodgers are being careful about ramping up Ohtani too fast to reduce the risk of another set back. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was asked about how Ohtani is progressing. "He was spinning it a little bit more in the touch-and-feel," Roberts said, according to Chen. "I'm not sure what's to come. Hopefully, he comes out of it well, which is what I would expect." Ohtani returning would help the Dodgers injury riddled pitching staff get back on track in the heart of the Major League Baseball season. Baseball-loving birds cause 'duck delay' in Minor League game
May 5 (UPI) -- A Minor League Baseball game in Missouri was delayed when a pair of ducks decided to land on the field and go for a walk during the bottom of the fourth inning. The Springfield Cardinals, a Double-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals in the Texas League's North Division, shared a video showing the "duck delay" during Saturday's game. Advertisement The video shows a pair of ducks wandering casually around the field during the team's game against the Northwest Arkansas Naturals, a Kansas City Royals affiliate team. One of the ducks flew away on its own, but the other insisted on remaining on the field, despite efforts by field crews to shoo it away. The duck eventually waddled off the field when crews opened a gate in the outfield, eliciting cheers from the crowd. The Cardinals ended up losing their third consecutive game with a score of 5-4.

Team Penske turmoil at Talladega brings out defense of Cindric from ex Braves slugger Chipper Jones
TALLADEGA, Ala. (AP) — If there's beef between teammates Austin Cindric and Joey Logano — and none other than Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Chipper Jones is convinced there is — then Team Penske has some work to do to smooth things over. At the end of the second stage of Sunday's race at Talladega Superspeedway, Cindric didn't help Logano enough to Logano's liking and it allowed rival Toyota driver Bubba Wallace to win the stage and valuable bonus points that come with it. Logano launched into an expletive-laden rant on his team radio in which he seethed at fellow Ford driver Cindric. Advertisement 'Way to go Austin,' said Logano in the part suitable for print. 'You just gave it to him. Gave a Toyota a stage win. Nice job. Way to go ... put that in the book.' Cindric and Team Penske management seemed to understand. Jones was not so forgiving in a series of social media posts. 'Good teammates are hard to come by, Boss! Remember that one of urs MFed u on national tv, when in all actuality, u did everything possible to keep from wrecking him,' Jones wrote. 'Hate to be #dueces in the 'team' meeting on Monday. Some people are 'hooray for our team as long as I'm the star' as every team has them. Hendrick, RCR, JGR, Penske, etc. Sometimes karma is glorious.' And, just in case 'anyone is confused, lemme be clear," Jones wrote as he tagged Logano as the target of his ire. Jones, who grew up not far from Daytona International Speedway and apparently is a NASCAR fan, continued his rant by calling Logano 'selfish' in another post, and celebrated in yet another when Logano was disqualified for failing post-race inspection. Advertisement At Team Penske, the reaction was more muted. 'I felt like I kind of just got pinched, was trying not to wreck the cars in front of me, including Joey. It was a messy end of the stage ... Joey could have probably done better, we let one slip there,' Cindric said. "I can understand his frustration without kind of seeing the whole picture. These are the types of things that when you're expecting someone to have your best interest, those are the challenges, right? We have a lot of meetings centered around that. I feel like it requires constant maintenance. It's not always pretty. The conversations aren't always easy. 'I do feel like as a team we do it better than most. I think that's something we'll definitely be talking about (Monday) as far as how to do it better, understand all sides, be better for it.' Michael Nelson, named president of Team Penske's NASCAR program earlier this year when Cindric's father, Tim, relinquished some of his roles at the organization, thought the situation would be cleared up internally. Advertisement 'It's just like a normal family,' he said. "We have to go in and close the door when we're not in front of everybody else and work through the issues that we have. There was obviously some frustration there. Heat-of-the-moment situation, for sure. I think we've done a better job than most. It just shows you that there's still more work to do, that it's something you have to continually work on race after race.' As Cindric wore Talladega's traditional winner's wreath all around the track, he didn't seem bothered by any potential beef with NASCAR's only active three-time Cup Series champion. It's been tough going for Cindric, who won the Daytona 500 in his 2022 rookie season, went winless in 2023, one once last year and on Sunday snapped a 30-race losing streak and became the first Team Penske driver to win a race through the first 10 this season. As Cindric tried to find his footing, teammates Logano and Ryan Blaney combined to win the last three Cup Series championships. As his teammates won races and title, Cindric was fighting to prove he wasn't a nepo-baby and deserved his seat at one of NASCAR's top teams. Cindric said the success of his teammates was motivation to him. At 14th in the Cup Series standings, he's now the only Penske driver locked into the playoffs as the series heads to Texas Motor Speedway this weekend. Advertisement 'Anytime you can have an example set you try at a bare minimum not to just meet that example — I want to be better. I want to be the best, right?' Cindric said. "Just being as good in my mind, as far-fetched as it might be as a two-, three-year Cup driver to say I want to be better than the champion, that's how you have to think. 'I commit way too much of my time. I ask a lot out of the people I work with. I try to reciprocate with that. The 'as good' is not good enough in my mind. I look at it as an example, as a competitive advantage for us to be able to have that type of example in-house.' ___ AP auto racing:
