Leander Paes Conferred with the Prestigious P C Chandra Puraskaar 2025
One of the most prestigious honours, the P C Chandra Puraskaar, was awarded this year to tennis legend Shri Leander Paes. The award was conferred on 11 May 2025 at a grand ceremony hosted at Science City Auditorium, Kolkata. Instituted by the P C Chandra Group, the Puraskaar recognises outstanding achievement across various fields and celebrates the values of excellence and integrity espoused by the Group's visionary founder, Shri Purna Chandra Chandra. The award ceremony, is held annually on the founder's birthday, paying tribute to his legacy by honouring India's most distinguished personalities who have made significant contributions to society and the nation. Now in its 32nd year, the P C Chandra Puraskaar carries an honorarium of ₹20,00,000/- (Rupees Twenty Lakhs only), which is fully tax-exempt. It remains one of the most respected awards given by a private institution in India. Over the last three decades, the award has been presented to an illustrious array of national icons across disciplines — from music and medicine to sports, literature, social work, and science. Past recipients included ISRO Chairman Shri S. Somanath(2024), World Boxing Champion Smt. Mary Kom (2023), Sarod maestro Ustad Amjad Ali Khan (2022), cricket legend Kapil Dev (2020–21), Dr. Devi Prasad Shetty (2019), legendary singer Smt. Asha Bhosle (2018), and Nobel Peace Laureate Shri Kailash Satyarthi (2017), among many others. In 2025, the award was presented to Shri Leander Paes, one of India's greatest sporting icons and a global ambassador of Indian tennis. Known for his passion, perseverance, and extraordinary achievements on the international tennis circuit, Paes has won 18 Grand Slam titles and is the first Indian to have competed in seven consecutive Olympic Games, earning a bronze medal in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Leander Paes conferred prestigious P C Chandra Puraskaar 2025
Kolkata, May 12 (UNI) Grand Slam title holder and former professional Tennis player, Leander Paes, has been conferred with the prestigious 32nd P C Chandra Puraskaar at a glittering function here. Instituted by the P C Chandra Group, the award recognises exceptional achievements across diverse fields and honours the legacy of its visionary founder Purna Chandra Chandra. The Puraskaar, carrying a tax-free honorarium of Rs 20 lakh, is among the most respected honours and is awarded annually on the founder's birth anniversary on May 11 since its inception in 1993. The award was conferred upon the 51-year Tennis veteran Leander Paes as he has been recognised as global ambassador of Indian tennis with 18 Grand Slam titles and an Olympic bronze to his name. "His relentless pursuit of excellence perfectly embodies the spirit of the award," the P C Chandra Group official said. 'It is our privilege to honour Leander Paes for his unmatched contributions to sport. Leander Paes–Samanta Sports Academy to be established at KIIT and KISS, Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar, May 10 (UNI) The Leander Paes–Samanta Sports Academy is set to be established at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) and Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) in Bhubaneswar. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on Friday between KIIT-KISS and tennis legend Leander Paes to formalise the initiative. Dr. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and KISS, signed the MoU on behalf of the institutions, while Leander Paes signed on his own behalf. According to the agreement, the Academy will promote 16 different sports, including tennis. Leander Paes, an Olympian, recipient of the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, and Padma Bhushan awardee, is a former Indian tennis player and the first Asian man to be inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. He has won eight men's doubles and ten mixed doubles Grand Slam titles. This collaboration marks a major milestone in Indian sports development. KIIT and KISS will provide world-class infrastructure, while Paes will offer his technical expertise and extensive experience, attracting talent from across the globe. Following the signing of the MoU, Leander expressed his enthusiasm, noting that KIIT and KISS possess state-of-the-art sports facilities. He pledged to work diligently to elevate both institutions to global prominence in sports education and announced his vision to nurture 250,000 sporting talents over the next 15 years through this initiative. The Academy will emphasise the emotional, mental, and physical well-being of athletes by offering specialised training, rehabilitation services, and diverse development opportunities. Dr. Samanta highlighted that, although KIIT and KISS are academic institutions, they have remained deeply committed to the promotion and development of sports and athletes for over two decades. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to Leander Paes for partnering in this noble endeavor, describing it as a moment of immense pride for both institutions.
