All eyes on Sundowns and SA's three URC quarterfinalists

There is also plenty of interest in the Champions League final in Europe, where PSG take on Inter Milan. Pyramids FC players celebrate at the final whistle after beating Sundowns in the first leg of their Champions League final match at Loftus last weekend. Picture: Lefty Shivambu/Gallo Images Another exciting weekend of sport awaits us. There's plenty to keep football and rugby fans entertained, with these clashes our highlights. PSG v Inter PSG's trouble-filled efforts to win the Uefa Champions League could finally come to a happy ending on Saturday evening, as they take on Inter Milan at the Allianz Arena in Munich. Since they were injected with Qatari billions following their purchase by QSI in 2011, the Champions League has been the holy grail for the Paris side. Yet they have only reached one previous final, losing 1-0 to Bayern Munich in 2019. This time they will be favourites to beat Inter. But Simone Inzaghi's side have already sprung a couple of surprises in this year's tournament, taking down Bayern Munich in the quarterfinals and Barcelona in the semis. Prediction: PSG 2 Inter 1 Pyramids FC v Sundowns Mamelodi Sundowns have it all to do on Sunday when they take on Pyramids FC at the June 30 Stadium in Cairo in the second leg of their Caf Champions League final. A last-gasp equaliser from Pyramids in Tshwane gave the Egyptian side a precious away goal to take back home, and they now know they will win a first ever Champions League if they can stop Sundowns from scoring. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso must get another good performance out of his team away from home. Sundowns showed in the semifinals, when they won with a 1-1 draw in the second leg against Al Ahly in Cairo, that they are a force to be reckoned with on their travels. Cardoso's side will probably look to keep it tight and hit Pyramids with a sucker punch. Expect a tight affair, but Sundowns might just sneak it. Prediction: Pyramids 0 Sundowns 1 Rugby URC quarterfinals The Stormers take on Glasgow in Scotland on Friday night, while the Bulls host Edinburgh and the Sharks welcome Munster on Saturday. It will take something special for the Stormers to win on the road, but expect big home games by the Bulls and Sharks. Unfortunately, South Africa might have just one team in the semifinals next week. For my money the Sharks have not been strong enough, in all departments, to progress beyond this stage, while the Stormers face a tough time against the defending champions, who'll have a point to prove. Jake White's Bulls also have a tough encounter against a side who have found way to make life difficult for them, and they have Sean Everitt coaching them, but expect them to come out on top. Prediction: Bulls to win, Stormers and Sharks to lose

Arrows confirm second half restart for SuperSport clash

The PSL still have to confirm when the two sides will play. The SuperSport United-Golden Arrows clash on February 23 had to be abandoned due to a power faiure at the stadium. Arrows – 'Starting from the second half' 'Our previously postponed Betway Prem fixture against SuperSport United will be completed, starting from the second half,' said Arrows on Twitter on Thursday. 'The date and time for the remainder of the match is still to be decided. We will update you on this as soon as possible.' It is unclear quite why it has taken the Premier Soccer League almost three months to make a decision regarding the match. There was a possibility that a PSL Disciplinary Committee would award the game to Arrows, as SuperSport as the home side failed to supply a backup generator. But with both sides still in danger of relegation, it has now been decided that the game will be played. The first 45 minutes on February 23 ended at 1-1, so that is where the game will start from when it is played to a finish. With Royal AM kicked out of the league, only one team faces possible relegation via the play offs at the end of this season. Battle to avoid finishing 15th Cape Town City are currently in the relegation play-off spot in 15th in the table on 26 points. SuperSport are ahead of City only on goal difference, but have one game in hand. Arrows are a point clear of both, also with one game in hand. City will play Stellenbosch on Saturday at the Cape Town Stadium in their last game of the season. On the same day at the same time, SuperSport will host Richards Bay while Arrows are at home to Sekhukhune. OPINION: The Bulls, and Jake White, deserve to taste URC glory

The Pretoria-based team have featured in the playoffs in each of the last four seasons of the URC. The Bulls will play in the URC quarter-finals for the fourth straight season. Picture: Lefty Shivambu/Gallo Images It's now time for the Bulls to win the United Rugby Championship. While the Stormers won the title in the inaugural season in 2021/22, and should have gone back-to-back in 2022/23, and the Sharks won last season's Challenge Cup, the reality is the Bulls have been South Africa's best and most consistent performers in the URC. And while they face a tough knockout phase this season, starting with a quarter-final against Edinburgh, and a potential final away to Irish giants Leinster if they get that far, Jake White and his charges have a wonderful opportunity to finally go all the way. Playoffs in each of last four seasons The Bulls' consistency in the URC is remarkable. In 2021/22 they finished fourth with 11 wins from 18 matches and 58 points. The following season they finished sixth with 10 wins from 18 and 53 points. Last season (2023/24) they finished second with 13 wins from 18 and 66 points and this season they have again finished second, but with 14 wins from 18 and 68 points. If things go their way they will play at home in the quarters and semi-finals, and if they get lucky, also in the final, provided they progress that far and someone knocks Leinster out. Last season's final loss to the Glasgow Warriors (16-21) hurt badly. Playing at home at Loftus Versfeld the Bulls had everything they needed to win the title, but they didn't deliver on the field when it mattered. A year on and they look stronger, with greater depth, and will again believe they have what it takes to go all the way. Coach Jake White and company CEO Edgar Rathbone, and all their staff, have done wonders for the team and union and the Bulls are again right up there, among the best provincial/club sides in the game. Of course, the Sharks and Stormers will also have aspirations of winning the title this season, and they, too, have a good chance, but if any team deserve to win the URC title it is the Bulls. It would also be very nice to see White lifting the trophy after the heartache of previous seasons' disappointments.
