Original STREET FIGHTER Directors Explain Why They Walked Away From It and How They Were Preparing — GeekTyrant

Before their next horror movie Bring Her Back hits screens, Talk to Me directors Danny and Michael Philippou are opening up about the project that they signed on for and then walked away from… Street Fighter . After blowing up in 2022 with their breakout horror hit Talk to Me , the Australian filmmaking duo jumped on board a live-action adaptation of Street Fighter , one of the most iconic fighting franchises in video game history. But now, they've revealed why they stepped away, and what kind of vision they were developing before the timing fell apart. Michael Philippou said: 'We were having so much fun developing it. I was traveling around Thailand, looking for the real Sagat, going to muay thai camps, training with people while writing. We had ideas. We had a solid outline. 'We were developing the fight sequences. We can't say too much as to what they were. It was just a scheduling thing. The timing just didn't line up, but we love Legendary, and they're still going ahead with it, so we're excited to watch it.' It's clear that the Philippous weren't just casually thinking about directing Street Fighter , they were diving in, training, researching, and crafting something that felt grounded and culturally connected. The kind of gritty, immersive energy that would make for a uniquely visceral Street Fighter movie. But with their horror follow-up Bring Her Back now in production, the timing simply didn't work. Legendary is still moving full ahead with Street Fighter , and some big names are reportedly circling the cast. According to recent reports, Jason Momoa, WWE's Roman Reigns, Noah Centineo, and Bullet Train 's Andrew Koji are in talks to join the film. Nothing official has dropped yet, but Reigns is rumored to be playing Akuma, Koji would be a sharp choice for Ryu, Centineo seems like a natural Ken, and Momoa he could play Blanka. With the Philippous out, the directing reins have passed to Kitao Sakurai, known for his chaotic comedy chops on The Eric Andre Show and his work on the video game-adjacent Twisted Metal series for Peacock. This will be Hollywood's third swing at the Capcom classic. The 1994 film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and Raul Julia was critically savaged but has earned cult status over the years. The 2009 film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li , on the other hand, I don't know anyone who liked it. Had the Philippou brothers stayed on, it sounds like we might've gotten a more grounded, fight-first approach rooted in authenticity and martial arts culture. Instead, the movie is headed in a new direction, and we'll have to wait and see how that turns out.

Street Fighter movie's cast may include Minecraft's Jason Mamoa, WWE's Roman Reigns and others

Jason Momoa , known for " A Minecraft Movie ," and WWE star Roman Reigns , from "Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw," are reportedly in talks to join the cast of Legendary's live-action Street Fighter movie . A Deadline report cited sources to claim that Andrew Koji (from "Bullet Train") and Noah Centineo ("Warfare") are also in discussions for roles in the film, which is based on the Capcom video games. However, representatives for the studio have declined to comment, and the plot details for the film remain undisclosed. In February, Kitao Sakurai ("Bad Trip") took over as director for the project. He inherited the role from Danny and Michael Philippou ("Talk To Me"), who were attached in April 2023 after Legendary acquired the exclusive film and TV rights to the "Street Fighter" intellectual property. The film adaptation is being co-developed and co-produced alongside Capcom, the developer and publisher of the video games. There has been no information released yet regarding who has written the script or who will specifically produce the action film. Bonkers Teaser Trailer For THE TOXIC AVENGER Sees Toxie Crash a "Killer Nutz" Concert in Gruesome Fashion — GeekTyrant

Here's another bonkers teaser trailer for the remake of Troma's The Toxic Avenger , and it introduces us to a monstercore rock band named 'Killer Nutz', which is managed by Elijah Wood's character. Then it sees Toxie crashing their concert in gruesome and brutal fashion! The film is directed by Macon Blair who previously teased, 'It's practical effects. You can see all the goopy little boils and stuff like that. And we definitely stayed true to some of the really iconic elements: the tutu that's melted onto his body, the janitor's mop as his super weapon.' The film follows Winston Gooze (Dinklage), a struggling janitor who falls into a vat of toxic waste and emerges as a monstrous yet powerful defender against corporate greed. This 'timely reimagining' leans heavily into environmental themes while still packing in the absurd, over-the-top violence fans expect. Blair describes the film's gore as ' Itchy & Scratchy -type violence,' referencing The Simpsons ' over-the-top cartoon brutality. He reveals, 'We've got a guy that gets his head stuffed in a car engine and it kind of grinds his head up. That was a gag I was fond of.' Blair admits he was surprised by how far the studio let him push the insanity: 'I kept expecting Legendary to say, 'This is not what we want,' but they kept agreeing to the things I pitched.' His goal is to 'Embrace the silliness and trashiness, while wanting it to be an enjoyable, crowd-pleasing, rock'n'roll fun time.' Despite earlier reports that the film was deemed 'unreleasable,' it was a hit at Fantastic Fest, and now fans will finally get to see it in all its unrated, gory glory. While Dinklage stars as the toxic hero, it's actor and movement artist Luisa Guerreiro who actually brings the mutated character to life under layers of practical effects. Dinklage himself is eager for audiences to experience it, saying, 'I do want it to get out there into the world because it was a really big hit at Fantastic Fest in Austin, and Macon Blair, the writer/director who is also in The Thicket ... He's incredible. He's one of my favorite people and favorite artists. So hopefully it will have its day in the toxic sun.' Alongside Dinklage, the film boasts an impressive cast, including Elijah Wood, Julia Davis, Taylour Paige, Kevin Bacon, and Jacob Tremblay. The movie is set to hit theaters on August 29.

‘Sunrise on the Reaping' Adds Even More Stars to the Hunger Games

Plus, Legendary's 'Street Fighter' movie isn't down for the count just yet. Practical Magic 2 is beginning to cast its next generation. The Backrooms movie adaptation may have found some serious stars. Fear Street: Prom Queen's director talks killer inspirations. Plus, what's coming on Lazarus. Spoilers now! Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Oscar winner Kieran Culkin is the latest star to join the Hunger Games prequel's expansive cast. The Hollywood Reporter has word that Culkin will play a younger version of Caesar, the eccentric host of the titular games played by Stanley Tucci in the original movie series. Street Fighter Deadline reports Andrew Koji, Jason Momoa, Noah Centineo and Roman Reigns are currently in talks to play undisclosed characters in Legendary's live-action Street Fighter movie, after the film was removed from next year's release slate. The Backrooms Deadline also has word Chiwetel Ejiofor and Cristin Milioti are in talks to join A24's feature adaptation of The Backrooms, the viral series of found-footage videos from Kane Parsons about an unpeopled, seemingly endless office building. Practical Magic 2 Variety also reports Joey King has joined the cast of Practical Magic 2 as the daughter of Sandra Bullock's character, Sally Owens. Shaun of the Dead 2 During a recent Reddit AMA, Simon Pegg once again confirmed he has no plans for a Shaun of the Dead sequel. I think it's best left alone. I don't think there's any point in rebooting it. Some stories just have a beginning, middle and end. And the trouble with sequels sometimes, is that you have to undo the resolution of the original film in order to start another story. With films like Mission: Impossible, or the kind of superhero genre, or Star Trek, it works because it's a continuing adventure. But with Shaun of the Dead, Shaun has an arc that he starts somewhere and ends somewhere. And we're happy with the way that ends. And I that think sometimes, when you sequelize a film like that, you can end up spoiling the original, because when you watch the original again, you're thinking, 'Well they're gonna go through this other thing.' The resolution stops having any meaning. So, no, is the answer to that question! Fear Street: Prom Queen In conversation with Bloody-Disgusting, director Matt Palmer confirmed the slasher's look in Fear Street: Prom Queen is heavily inspired by Mrs. Tredoni, the raincoat-wearing killer in Alfred Sole's Alice, Sweet Alice. Alice, Sweet Alice was definite influence. There's a chase scene in that with the killer in the raincoat. And I'm big giallo fan too, so I think there was a giallo element that I always wanted from the start. We were like, 'What color of jacket we put against the red lockers?' We looked at yellow, but that felt a bit too on the nose, because Alice, Sweet Alice already done that. We tried blue. And then one of our concept artists came back with red on red, which we hadn't thought of because we were looking for something that wasn't red, and it was like, 'Oh, my God! That looks awesome!' Ironically, I read that the guy who directed Alice, Sweet Alice said that he always wanted a red raincoat but couldn't do that because it already been done in Don't Look Now, so we ended up back where Alice, Sweet Alice wanted to be. The mask took a long time. There's been so many iconic horror masks. It felt like everything had been done, and it was a bit of a panic. Then the production designer came back with that one, and it scared the shit out of all of us when we looked at it, so we were like, 'That's that's the one.' And then the Wellington boots, which is just more practical, really, in terms of wading around in everyone's blood. Talk to Me 2 Meanwhile, Danny and Michael Philippou provided an update on Talk to Me 2 during their recent appearance on The Boo Crew podcast (via Bloody-Disgusting). We have two versions of the script for Talk to Me 2 that are focusing on two different sets of characters that are in two different places. I'm equally excited about both. There's one scene in one of them that I think will be one of the best things I ever shoot. I think it's so horrific. I'm like this is insane and I've already started talking to people. I'm like, how can we pull this off practically? So those conversations are happening, but it's about stepping away from the world and then coming back into it super reinvigorated. So that's why we didn't do that next. I'm writing another horror movie at the moment, which I adore so much. And it feels like it's huge. So there's that. And then I think would be Talk to Me 2. Jurassic World Rebirth Bloody-Disgusting additionally has seven new posters for Jurassic World Rebirth, in which, unsurprisingly, people are imperiled by dinosaurs. The Protector Marguerite Moreau plays a 'dirt-jouster' in the post-apocalypse who agrees to heist the last freshwater aquifer from a Native American reservation in order to escape a manslaughter charge in the trailer for The Protector. Escape from the 21st Century We also have another trailer for Escape from the 21st Century, the upcoming film in which three kids from 1999 discover they can travel back and forth 20 years through time by sneezing, and that 2019 absolutely sucks. Lazarus Finally, Adult Swim has released a clip from this week's episode of Lazarus.

Jason Momoa, Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo, Roman Reigns in talks for new 'Street Fighter' film

Jason Momoa, Andrew Koji, Noah Centineo and Roman Reigns are in early talks to star in the upcoming Street Fighter movie from Legendary Entertainment and Capcom. The project, based on the iconic video game franchise, will be directed by Kitao Sakurai, known for The Eric Andre Show. The cast has not yet been finalised, but these early negotiations suggest a high-profile lineup for the adaptation. Legendary is co-developing and co-producing the film with Capcom, ensuring the involvement of the game's original creators. Its latest instalment, Street Fighter 6, released in 2023, won best fighting game at the Game Awards. Previous film adaptations include the 1994 Street Fighter starring Jean-Claude Van Damme and 2009's Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.
