Rod Stewart facing eye-watering cost of Glastonbury set as his children make sacrifice for show

Sir Rod Stewart is set to play the coveted Legends Slot at Glastonbury in just a few weeks time and is planning on pulling out all the stops for what is likely to be his final major festival performance. Glastonbury musical festival goers are set to witness a historic moment during its Sunday evening Legends Slot. In previous years, music icons including Lionel Richie, Kylie Minogue and Dolly Parton have all entertained audiences in the coveted closing spot but this summer, it will be Sir Rod Stewart who graces the Pyramid Stage. However, this is not the 80-years-old's first time at Glastonbury, having played the festival back in 2002 with Coldplay and Stereophonics. However, the singer's upcoming summer gig promises to be an extraordinary show. Sir Rod is also said to be planning a raucous weekend with his band and pals ahead of the landmark performance. ‌ Not all of his music buddies will be there though as the Maggie May star confessed that he doesn't see old pals like Ronnie Wood or Sir Elton John as often anymore because "they don't drink and I still do. They stay away from me... bad influence!" However, Rod, who has shifted some 200 million records over his six-decade long career, will need to start looking after his own health too, after he recently had to cancel a Las Vegas show due to a nasty throat infection, Glasgow Live reports. ‌ While he has no plans to officially retire, the rock icon announced that his 2025 European and North American shows would mark the end of his "large-scale world tours," with future performances set to take place at smaller venues. Rod will indeed be going out with a bang at Glastonbury as he revealed to BBC'S Sidetracked with Annie and Nick that he's splashing out almost £300,000 on his Sunday show. Despite being the festival's headliner, Sir Rod said he doesn't receive a guest list and that three of his eight kids will be buying their own tickets. The singer said he offered to cover the price of his family's tickets himself but his children opted to pay their own way to witness their father's final major festival performance. While Sir Rod's payment for the event remains unknown, Glastonbury headliners typically earn no more than £250,000, a figure confirmed by organiser Emily Eavis who noted that acts receive less than 10% of what they could command elsewhere. ‌ A significant amount of the costs will cover transporting his band and gear from California, with the ensemble set to reside in a Bath hotel for the duration of the festival. Sir Rod expressed his anticipation for an unforgettable weekend celebrating with his bandmates. ‌ In addition to his regular band, which includes guitarist Don Kirkpatrick, long-time bassist Conrad Kirsch and violinist J'anna Jacoby, Sir Rod has revealed plans to reunite with former Faces bandmate and current Rolling Stone, Ronnie Wood. He also plans to have a small orchestra on stage with him for his ballads, such as Tonight's the Night and I Don't Want to Talk About It. The singer has admitted it will be tough to fit in all of his classic hits during the 75-minute slow. ‌ To make the most of his time on stage, he plans to keep his between-song chatter to a minimum, although admits he will pause for the occasional sip of Bacardi and Coke. He said: "It's the only thing I drink and I only drink it when I do gigs. " The 80-year-old also has no plans to stop recording anytime soon with a new album featuring Rod and former Faces bandmates Ronnie Wood and Kenney Jones due to be released in 2026. Speaking about the new album with music Craig McLean, Sir Rod said that there are "15 tracks that are extremely worthy, some old, some new."

Glastonbury 2025 lineup revealed with headliners Olivia Rodrigo, The 1975 and Neil Young

The Glastonbury 2025 lineup has been announced, revealing that British rock band The 1975 and US pop star Olivia Rodrigo will join Neil Young as the festival's three headliners. Other acts on the lineup include Brit Award and Grammy-winning star Charli XCX, singer RAYE, Grammy-winning rapper Doechii, British hip-hop artist Loyle Carner, Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro and rapper Busta Rhymes. It was announced last year that Rod Stewart will take on the Sunday teatime Legends Slot on the Pyramid Stage. Organisers seem intent on offering festival-goers a mix of both established and new talent, from Nineties-formed electronic pioneers The Prodigy, Canadian artist Alanis Morissette and rock band The Libertines to 'Messy' star Lola Young, US pop singer Gracie Abrams, and viral star Shaboozey, whose single 'A Bar Song (Tipsy)' has been a near-permanent fixture on TikTok since its release. Among the returning festival favourites include Mercury Prize-winning rock band Wolf Alice, indie duo Wet Leg, Fatboy Slim and Scissor Sisters. The 1975, led by frontman Matty Healy, will top the Friday billing on the Pyramid Stage, marking their debut as headliners. They are Glastonbury veterans, having performed at the Worthy Farm bonanza three times, including in 2014 and 2016. Veteran artist Young's headline slot on the Saturday was accidentally announced on 1 January, when he abruptly announced that he was withdrawing from this year's festival due to his belief that it was under the 'corporate control' of the BBC. Just two days later, he said that he had received an 'error in information' and that the festival was 'back on our itinerary'. He previously headlined Glastonbury in 2009. Rodrigo proved herself to be a favourite among Glastonbury-goers back in 2022, when she appeared on the Other Stage and brought out British singer Lily Allen to sing her song 'F*** You' in response to the US Supreme Court ruling over Roe v Wade. The 22-year-old will headline Sunday night on the Pyramid Stage and become the second-youngest headliner in Glastonbury history, after fellow pop star Billie Eilish who topped the bill in 2022, aged 20. Rodrigo is also headlining British Summer Time festival in London's Hyde Park, two days before she heads to Worthy Farm. Pop-soul artist RAYE looks set to enjoy another huge year as she returns from performing at the 2025 Academy Awards, and will now play on the Pyramid Stage before Young's set. The 27-year-old swept the Brit Awards last year thanks to her debut album, My 21st Century Blues, which she delivered as an independent artist after walking away from her record label, following a battle over their apparent refusal to let her release her own music. Meanwhile, trend-setting artist Charli XCX looks set to enjoy another Brat summer, as she will headline the Other Stage on Saturday, one year after her DJ set managed to rival Dua Lipa's headline slot. Further acts are due to be announced in the coming months, with 2024 breakout stars Chappell Roan and Sabrina Carpenter among the rumoured additions. The 1975 frontman Healy is known as one of UK music's most divisive figures, and appeared to be called out at Glastonbury in 2023 by his label mate Rina Sawayama over a number of controversial comments he made during a podcast episode. The band are currently being sued by the organisers of a festival in Malaysia, which was shut down after Healy kissed one of his bandmates, bassist Ross MacDonald, onstage at the Good Vibes Festival in Kuala Lumpur in 2023. Healy said he was protesting the country's anti-LGBT laws. The festival's annual resale, which gives music fans one final chance to get their hands on tickets ahead of June, is also expected to take place in spring, having been held last year in April. Glastonbury 2025 takes place from 25 to 29 June, and will mark the last festival before its traditional fallow year, which gives the farmland and its workers a chance to rest.

Leo Sayer reflects on infamous Celebrity Big Brother meltdown: ‘It was pretty horrible'

Singer-songwriter Leo Sayer has reflected on his infamous Celebrity Big Brother UK appearance, comparing his time on the reality show to being in 'a Maga cult'. The Grammy-winning English-Australian artist, who rose to fame in the Seventies with hits including 'You Make Me Feel Like Dancing' and 'When I Need You', appeared in the celebrity version programme in 2007. In one of Big Brother's most memorable scenes, Sayer ended up escaping from the house after being told he could not have fresh underwear, only washing powder to wash the clothes he already had. Speaking to the i Paper, Sayer said he didn't realise what he was letting himself in for as he had never seen the show before: 'My manager promised me that I would get [a] huge reaction from it, and therefore I could go in the studio and make a record.' After 12 days in the house, he was 'climbing the walls', he said: 'I learned that I was very claustrophobic.' Asked how he looks back on that time, Sayer said he told himself it 'never happened, it's a better way to deal with it'. 'But it was an incredible learning experience, about humanity,' he remarked. 'It was pretty horrible, though. Like being in a Maga cult – 'switch off all intelligence'.' 'I don't wash my own clothes,' Sayer, who starred in the series alongside Jade Goody, Indian actor Shilpa Shetty and Steps singer Ian 'H' Watkins, said in the notorious scene. 'Not in this house, it's not safe and sanitary.' Upon being told he needed to wash his clothes, Sayer announced that he would quit. 'You are spreading diseases, Big Brother, by making people live like this in this house… it's so f***ing simple to give a man some more underwear. So if you won't give me any more underwear I have no recourse then to walk through the fire safety doors and leave the house. It might make me look stupid, but I think it will make you look even more stupid.' Sayer then proceeded to escape through the emergency doors, upon which he was involved in a tussle with security, who attempted to prevent him from leaving. He was ultimately permitted to quit the show. In the same interview, Sayer revealed his dreams to perform in the Legends Slot at Glastonbury Festival: 'I'd love to do it, but you just need someone to come forward and say, 'You're on,'' he said. This year's Legends Slot is being headlined by British rocker Sir Rod Stewart.
