Former Masters champion delighted to sign up to new NI Legends event at Galgorm

The Welsh wizard, who was also World No.1 during a remarkable career, will headline a field of former Major champions and Ryder Cup players for the Legends Tour event held at Galgorm on August 29-31. It will be the 20th professional event hosted by Galgorm, which previously was the location for the ISPS HANDA World Invitational on the DP World Tour and LPGA Tour, as well as the NI Open which was held on various tours. And Woosnam, who captained Europe to Ryder Cup success in Ireland at The K Club in 2006, is thrilled to get the chance to come and play at the event in two month's time. 'I am delighted to be heading back to Ireland to compete in this new Legends Tour event. Golf in Northern Ireland is thriving, especially with Rory McIlroy completing golf's Grand Slam recently and The Open returning to Royal Portrush next month,' said the World Golf Hall of Famer. 'Galgorm enjoys a great reputation as one of the country's best tournament venues and I am looking forward to competing here in August. The Pro-Am format for the NI Legends lends itself to a great week where amateurs get the chance to compete alongside the professionals.' The Legends Tour, formerly known as the European Seniors Tour, is open to professionals aged 50 or over and its events regularly feature a wealth of talent including the likes of Miguel Angel Jimenez, Paul Lawrie, Paul McGinley, Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal. As well as the main tournament, the event will also feature a Pro-Am that will see several high-profile names compete alongside the professionals the day before the event begins. 'We are delighted to be bringing the Legends Tour to Northern Ireland and the wonderful Galgorm. It's a venue with a long history of hosting professional tournaments and I'm sure it will present a real challenge to all the players,' said Legends Tour chief executive Phil Harrison. "Northern Ireland is a superb destination for golf and we are looking forward to playing in front of such knowledgeable and supportive fans, who I'm sure will welcome the opportunity to watch legends of the game close-up.' Aine Kearney, interim chief executive at Tourism Northern Ireland, commented: 'We are excited to welcome the Black Desert NI Legends this August, in what is an incredibly exciting year for golf in Northern Ireland. The NI Legends Open, held at Galgorm's championship Castle Course, showcases that Northern Ireland is indeed Made for Golf. 'Tourism NI is proud to support this world-class tournament, which draws golf enthusiasts from across the globe. Events like this not only celebrate our rich heritage and breathtaking landscapes but also showcase the superb facilities we offer to golfers worldwide. We're looking forward to an unforgettable experience for players and spectators alike.' Gary Henry, group golf director at the Galgorm Collection, added: 'The Black Desert NI Legends is something of a tournament milestone as its the 20th professional event to be staged at Galgorm, dating back to 2010 and including the 2020 Irish Open. "We are delighted to be working with the Legends Tour and title sponsors Black Desert on this exciting new event where many household names and former Major champions will be on show at Galgorm in August. "With the Pro-am format we also look forward to welcoming a number of Northern Ireland soccer legends who will take on an All-Star legends team to compete for the Legends Cup.'

Marshall stands tall to make US Seniors golf showdown

Dereham golfer Andrew Marshall has played his way into this month's US Senior Open (Image: Rushmer PR) Norfolk golfer Andrew Marshall is bound for the U.S Senior Open after battling through a qualifier in North Carolina, writes Tony Rushmer. Marshall fired a three-under-par round of 69 to finish runner-up in a field of more than 60 players at River Landing Golf Club. Advertisement His strong performance meant he became one of seven to make it through to the $4million seniors showdown, which will be staged from June 26-29 at The Broadmoor Golf Club in Colorado. Marshall completed the opening nine holes of the qualifier in level par, trading an early bogey for a birdie at the par-5 eighth hole. The Dereham Golf Club member surged through the gears in the second half of his round and from the 13th hole peeled off three straight birdies, which proved decisive. Then he stood tall through the closing three holes to earn his spot in the second seniors major of the season. Marshall, 51, said: 'I hit some solid shots under a bit of pressure. I didn't drop anything – I nearly did on 16 but holed a 10-footer for my par. Then I hit a good shot with a 3-rescue – like a hybrid – into about 15 feet at the 17th, a long par-3. Advertisement 'The 18th is their signature hole and you have to hit it at least 260 yards to get past the corner. Then I had 131 to a tight left flag into a stiff breeze and thought 'You haven't got to be a hero this week, just knock it on and two-putt'. 'So I punched a 9-iron just right of the hole to about 15 feet away and dollied it down to tap in. I was more than happy.' He can now look forward to rubbing shoulders with elite over-50s stars such as Ernie Els, Lee Westwood and Padraig Harrington. Not that the experience will unsettle Marshall, who came up through the Norfolk County Golf Union ranks before enjoying a successful European Tour career. Advertisement He said: 'I think I've proved I'm more than capable of playing against some of those guys.' Marshall competes mainly on the Legends Tour and before returning to the US at the end of the month is set to tee up in Greece next week. He also has events on home soil to look forward to, such as the Senior Open at Sunningdale at the end of July. He said: 'I feel very positive. It's nice to be playing well with some big events around the corner.'

From Speed to Swing: Trailblazing golfer-racer Bao drives Legends Tour back home

For Nguyễn Gia Bảo, golf has always been more than a game. It's a way to stay rooted in her heritage, dream beyond borders, and inspire change - especially for the next generation of players. This November, all those threads will come together in one powerful moment as Vietnam prepares to host one of the most prestigious senior golf events in the world: the Legends Championship Vietnam 2025. The European Senior Tour event for professionals aged 50 and over returns to Vietnam from 28–30 November, two years after its inaugural staging in Southeast Asia. Bao played a key role in helping bring the tournament back to her home country, working closely with the Legends Tour team from her base in Dubai to support its return. While Bao originally came to support the event in 2023, she unexpectedly found herself on the course, playing alongside the very legends she once admired from afar. 'I was just there to meet the legends,' she recalls. 'Then suddenly, I was offered a slot by the President of the Legends Tour himself... Honestly, I was afraid — my handicap was higher, and I felt pressure representing Vietnam on a live global stage. But their belief in me gave me the courage to say yes.' That moment, playing alongside major champions and Ryder Cup icons, was a turning point. But for Bao, who has spent over 17 years in the game, it was also a continuation of a lifelong journey. A Dubai-based entrepreneur and passionate sportswoman, Bao plays her golf at the Emirates Golf Club, where she continues to compete in regional amateur events. She is also the founder of The Golf House Vietnam, an academy focused on developing grassroots golf in her home country, which she plans to open in Dubai in the future. Bao the Trailblazer Beyond golf, Bao is a trailblazer. She became Vietnam's first female professional race car driver, representing the country at the FIA Motorsport Games in France in 2022 - a remarkable pivot from her early fear of speed to competing internationally in a male-dominated sport. Her journey began as a personal challenge, evolving into professional training across Europe and the U.S., and eventually reaching the global stage. 'If you want to be a warrior, then be a warrior,' she says. 'You just need the will inside you. Golf can teach you that kind of strength.' Her golfing resume includes standout victories at the Mercedes Championship Vietnam in 2013 and 2016, and a divisional win at the World Mercedes British Open in 2017. Most recently, she finished Top 3 in the Best Amateur category at the 2023 Legends event. Bao's vision for Vietnam's golfing future is shaped by her wide-ranging experiences - from her years on the fairways to breaking barriers on the racetrack. With success in business, including ventures in leather footwear and furniture export, she exemplifies the kind of multidimensional resilience she hopes to pass on. 'I want to help create golfers with the spirit of warriors - not just technique, but the perseverance and mindset to succeed. That's how we grow the game in Vietnam,' she concludes.

A Global Gateway In his welcome address, Nguyen Nam Nhan, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture and Sports and Head of the Organizing Committee, underscored the tournament's strategic impact saying: 'Vietnam Legends Tour 2025 is not just a sporting event, but a bridge for cultural, economic, and human exchange between Vietnam and international friends.
