10 red carpet looks at Cannes that broke the rules in 2025

As well as being one of the biggest events in the world of film, the Cannes Film Festival is also a pretty important week in fashion. Over the years, we have seen some incredible looks hit the red carpet at the prestigious celebration of cinema, but the 2025 event was dealt a devastating blow when it came to mind-boggling outfits. Before the fest kicked off, new red carpet rules came into place that banned nudity and 'voluminous ensembles.' In a statement, organisers said: 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival.' They continued: 'Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted. 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' Sources told The Hollywood Reporter that the regulations were updated to reflect 'certain rules that have long been in effect.' Rules are made to be broken, however, and a few celebrities did exactly that, touching down on the Cannes carpet in ensembles that were definitely close to the line… Never one to shy away from a bold look, supermodel Leomie Anderson hit the Hights 2 Lowest red carpet in a rather revealing dress. With her hair piled in sleep curls on her head, she wore a silver metal beaded high-neck gown that would have undoubtedly raised organisers' eyebrows. The ensemble was almost entirely see-through, with the star wearing coordinating silver pants and nipple covers underneath in somewhat of an attempt to preserve some modesty. She accessorised with a small black clutch bag and sparkling silver jewellery that matched the eye-catching piece. Bella Hadid is no stranger to causing a stir on the Cannes red carpet, freeing the nipple on multiple occasions in statement looks. This year, she was arguably more low-key in a black gown, but she still toed the line of the new rules with a thigh-high split in the backless number. The custom Saint Laurent silk gown also had intricate detailing, as well as cut-outs on the side to show a little skin but in a more reserved fashion than is typical for the Hadid sister. Even away from her legendary Halloween looks, Heidi Klum never fails to disappoint in the fashion department. At the Cannes opening ceremony, she stunned in a unique pink floral dress with cascading ruffles emulating petals, including a very voluminous train. It also included a daring side slit showing off her legs, somewhat defying the festival's nudity rule. The Mission: Impossible cast broke the red carpet rules by stopping to take a selfie on the red carpet. But that wasn't the only rule break at the premiere, as Pom Klementieff stepped out in a lilac plunge dress from Loewe. She ditched her bra to show plenty of skin underneath, posing confidently despite unquestionably flouting the guidelines. Like Bella's gown, it also included a high leg slit and straps across her back, creating a cut-out effect. Julia Garner didn't exactly break the rules of the red carpet, but it was a daring look, prodding the limits of the nudity ban. The Wolf Man star attended the opening ceremony in a sheer black Gucci gown that she appeared to be totally starkers underneath. But we're sure bosses were thankful that wasn't actually the case, as she rocked a sequin-covered nude liner underneath to shield her body. Halle Berry may have changed one of her looks to avoid being scolded for a long train, but a follow-up look at the 2025 Chopard Universe Dinner threw that consideration out the window. The incredible maroon gown had an elegant, structured train that followed the Catwoman star. It featured a structured red corset and yet another leg split, with the star accessorising with matching red heels and earrings. Aishwarya Rai put in a stunning appearance on the red carpet for the History of Sound premiere, wearing a gown that was certainly close to the wire in terms of dress code. The Bollywood icon is known as the Queen of Cannes, with this look proving exactly why. Her elaborate ensemble paid homage to her heritage, with designer Manish Malhotra later revealing she and the actress were both aligned on a vision. 'I was very sure that I wanted her to wear something handwoven, something that takes India's textile heritage to the global stage.' She wore a handwoven Kadwa Banarasi handloom saree in ivory, threaded with real silver and also featuring hints of rose gold. As far as elaborate trains go, Wan QianHui took a major risk. Attending the opening ceremony of Cannes 2025, the Chinese musical theatre star made the bold move of wearing a pastel yellow strapless number. It was the very definition of business on top, party on the bottom, as the bodice flowed out into a multi-layered skirt complete with fur. We can only imagine what a nightmare it was for her to walk through doorways. Farhana Bodi was one of many stars going for a vibrant colour, rocking up at the opening ceremony in head-to-toe pink. The UAE model clearly wanted to be anything but subtle, her custom blush pink dress by Atelier Zuhra surrounded by sculpted ruffles. 'I felt like a blingtastic Barbie last night,' she said afterwards. 'My look for Cannes 2025 is a love letter to unapologetic femininity and high fashion.' Stella Maxwell knows how to work a risqué piece of clothing thanks to her successful modelling career. More Trending And there's no doubt about whether her Cannes look pushed the boundaries, as she arrived for the Phoenician Scheme screening in a dress that we can't be sure organisers would be thrilled about. The sheer black number featured strategically placed embroidered flowers and lace ruffles to cover her body, but she still showed plenty of skin. Stella showcased her toned Victoria's Secret model figure, sweeping the floor with the train of her frock and adding to the sultry vibe with dark eye makeup. Got a story? British supermodel risks breaking Cannes' naked outfit rule with sheer dress

Supermodel Leomie Anderson dared to bare as she arrived on the red carpet in a rather revealing dress. The model, 32, looked incredible at the premiere of Highest 2 Lowest at the 78th Cannes Film Festival. With her hair piled in sleep curls on her head, she wore a silver metal beaded high-neck dress. The gown was entirely see-through and showed off the model's incredible figure, which was a particularly daring move this year at the French festival. Earlier this month, Cannes banned nudity and 'voluminous ensembles' from its red carpet under new rules. 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the festival,' it was announced by the event organisers. 'Voluminous outfits, in particular those with a large train, that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre are not permitted.' 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' Cannes has always had strict dress codes, specifically for screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière, where the most glamorous events are usually held. Black tie and evening wear are required for those screenings, but while navy-blue suits and 'elegant sandals' are permitted, 'tote-bags, backpacks or large bags' are not. More Trending Cannes has hosted some pretty daring outfits in the past, with the likes of Bella Hadid, Heidi Klum, and Kendall Jenner all making an effort to make a statement on the red carpet in years gone by. Leomie is a supermodel from Wandsworth who is best known as an activist and presenter. The star was a Victoria's Secret model between 2015 and 2018, becoming an official Victoria's Secret angel in 2019. At previous premieres, she has not shied away from wearing revealing looks and has confidently freed the nipple and showed off her fantastic physique. Got a story? Leomie Anderson risks breaking Cannes Film Festival's new stricter nudity rules as she poses in see-through mesh dress at premiere

Leomie Anderson risked breaking Cannes Film Festival 's new stricter nudity rules as she posed in see-through mesh dress at the Highest 2 Lowest premiere on Monday night. The British model, 32, opted for a daring look as she slipped into a silver mesh number which revealed her physique. She boosted her height with strappy heels and swept her dark tresses up into a sleek style. Over recent years the Cannes has arguably won more attention for the outfits worn by its celebrity guests than the roster of feature films being screened on the Croisette. But new nudity rules, devised for 'the sake of decency,' have been implemented at this year's festival. According to organisers, the austere move is an attempt to stifle the celebrity trend for 'naked dresses' - namely provocative outfits that reveal considerably more than they conceal - on the red carpet. The British model, 32, opted for a daring look as she slipped into a silver mesh number which revealed her physique 'For decency reasons, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as any other area of the festival,' states a Cannes festival document. 'The festival welcoming teams will be obligated to prohibit red carpet access to anyone not respecting these rules.' The surprise new policy features in a recent festival-goers charter - released with a series of outlines regarding expected public behaviour. Guests are expected to converge on the Grand Auditorium Louis Lumière for some of the highest profile film screenings across a packed two-week schedule in Cannes. It's understood that the iconic venue now adopts a more conservative dress code, with suits, dinner jackets and floor-length evening gowns generally favoured over headline grabbing ensembles. Classic little black dresses, cocktail dresses, pant-suits, dressy tops and elegant sandals, 'with or without a heel', will also be permitted. While the decision to implement a more stringent policy will be a first, it is not known if French TV broadcasters, wary of airing nudity, played a role in its enforcement. Major red carpet events, including the Cannes Film Festival, are aired in France by France Télévisions. Recently attracting more models and influencers than actors and filmmakers, the annual ceremony has seen an increase in risqué red carpet fashion statements. In 2021, American supermodel Bella Hadid bared her cleavage in a plunging black gown while attending a screening of Tre Piani (Three Floors). She pulled a similar stunt three years later, with guests at the 2024 gala left speechless after she attended the premiere of Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice completely braless beneath a sheer brown evening dress. This year's Cannes Film Festival is taking place in the wake of Trump's vow to enact tariffs on international films. Cannes, where filmmakers, sales agents and journalists gather from around the world, is the Olympics of the big screen, with its own golden prize, the Palme d´Or, to give out at the end. Filmmakers come from nearly every corner of the globe to showcase their films while dealmakers work through the night to sell finished films or packaged productions to various territories. 'You release a film into that Colosseum-like situation,' says Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho, who's returning to Cannes with 'The Secret Agent, a thriller set during Brazil 's dictatorship. 'You've got to really prepare for the whole experience because it's quite intense - not very far from the feeling of approaching a roller coaster as you go up the steps at the Palais.' Trump sent shock waves through Hollywood and the international film community when he announced on May 4 that all movies 'produced in Foreign Lands' will face 100 percent tariffs. The White House has said no final decisions have been made. Options being explored include federal incentives for U.S.-based productions, rather than tariffs. But the announcement was a reminder of how international tensions can destabilize even the oldest cultural institutions. The Cannes Film Festival originally emerged in the World War II years, when the rise of fascism in Italy led to the founding of an alternative to the then-government controlled Venice Film Festival. In the time since, Cannes' resolute commitment to cinema has made it a beacon to filmmakers. Countless directors have come to make their name. This year is no different, though some of the first-time filmmakers at Cannes are already particularly well-known. Kristen Stewart (The Chronology of Water), Scarlett Johansson (Eleanor the Great) and Harris Dickinson (Urchin) have all unveiled their feature directorial debuts in Cannes' Un Certain Regard sidebar section. Many Cannes veterans have returned, including Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning), Robert De Niro - who received an honorary Palme d´Or 49 years after Taxi Driver premiered in Cannes - and Quentin Tarantino, who paid tribute to low-budget Western director George Sherman. Meanwhile Scarlett's directorial debut Eleanor The Great, will be unveiled on May 20.

Glow Up's Ailish McBride on being a colour-blind make-up artist

Whether it's trying to cover up blemishes, match your foundation to your skin tone or create a bold eye look, picking out the right colours is an important part of doing your make-up. But what if you can't tell some of them apart? That's something Ailish McBride struggles with as a partially colour-blind make-up artist (MUA).The 20-year-old didn't find out she had the condition, also called colour vision deficiency, until a couple of years she says it runs in the family - with her dad and sister being fully colour-blind."Being a make-up artist is hard for me," Ailish tells BBC Newsbeat."Red and orange look the same to me and light blues I kind of see as grey," she says. That makes mixing purple particularly tricky and she also struggles to see pastel colours. The cosmetics student from Belfast features on the latest series of BBC Three's Glow Up, where she opens up about her show, hosted by model Leomie Anderson, sees 10 contestants from across the UK battle it out through weekly industry assignments and creative briefs to become the country's next make-up star."I didn't see me being colour blind as a setback in the competition because I know my skillset," Ailish says. "It was a bit tricky in certain situations but I'm proud of how I worked through it."In the first episode Ailish decided not to hold back, experimenting with an explosion of colour inspired by her own creativity."I love to challenge myself," she says. "I don't like to settle into a little box."I wanted to show people that even if you are colour-blind, you can still do big, bold, creative looks." In the first episode, judges Val Garland and Dominic Skinner said her final look was flat and simplistic and Ailish ended up in the Face Off, going head to head against contestant Joe Tiernan to stay in the competition. However, Val told her: "I think it's amazing you've got this much colour down being colour-blind"."That is showing a very determined make-up artist."Ailish thinks she was able to execute her looks after learning more about colour theory, helping her understand how to mix together the shades she after freelancing in the industry for a few years, she's become used to labelling all of her palettes with the names of corresponding colours. It's estimated that about 3 million people living in the UK are affected by colour blindness, according to Colour Blind Awareness. It affects more men than women - with about one in 12 males having the condition compared with one in 200 no cure and it's also not clear what causes it, the NHS says, but often it runs in families and is something people are born with and adapt to. After finding herself in the red chairs and at risk of elimination for two weeks in a row, Ailish became the second MUA to leave the competition on was seen getting emotional in the second episode, needing a hug from judge Val after her look failed to impress. "I get quite bad anxiety," Ailish tells Newsbeat."It was overwhelming at the time and I really let myself get in my head during the show."But Ailish was still proud to have even featured on Glow Up, which has been her dream since she first watched the show aged 14. Having recently finished her degree, she's looking forward to pursuing more of her goals by picking up work on films and in while she may not have got one on series 7, as she starts this new chapter, Ailish asks: "Can I get a Ding Dong?!"Glow Up: Britain's Next Make-Up Star is on BBC Three at 20:00 on Wednesdays and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Listen to Newsbeat live at 12:45 and 17:45 weekdays - or listen back here.
