Jonquel Jones, Leonie Fiebich and Emma Meesseman power Liberty to an 85-76 win over Wings
NEW YORK (AP) — Jonquel Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the New York Liberty to an 85-76 victory over the Dallas Wings on Tuesday night. Leonie Fiebich scored 14 points and Emma Meesseman, playing her first home game for the Liberty since her return to the WNBA, added 13. Chants of 'Emma!' broke out at Barclay's Center following the victory. Meesseman, a former finals MVP who last played in the league in 2022 before winning the EuroLeague Women's MVP the last three seasons, scored 11 points in her season debut on Sunday in an 87-78 win over Connecticut. Paige Bueckers had 21 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the Wings' first game since Dijonai Carrington was traded to the Lynx. Dallas forward Maddy Siegrist scored 13 points in her first game after missing two months due to a knee injury. Arike Ogunbowale scored 14. Last week the Wings (8-21) beat the Liberty 92-82, a game that became a distant memory Tuesday night. New York (18-10) grabbed the lead out of the gate and held on to it throughout most of the game. Two free throws by Bueckers tied the game at 34 in the final minutes of the first half, before Stephanie Talbot hit a 3-pointer to give New York a lead it never gave up the rest of the way. Talbot reached double digits with 13 points while Sabrina Ionescu was relatively quiet, scoring nine points, three in the first half and six in the second. The Wings stayed close for the first three quarter before the Liberty extended their advantage to double digits as the fourth wound down. ___ AP WNBA:

Sandy Brondello dubs Leonie Fiebich ‘most pure shooter' she's ever seen
The post Sandy Brondello dubs Leonie Fiebich 'most pure shooter' she's ever seen appeared first on ClutchPoints. It's too early to say if the New York Liberty have fully pulled out of their tailspin, but the team has won three of its last four games. Over the past week, Leonie Fiebich has been a major reason why. Fiebich had her best game of the season on Sunday in the Liberty's 79-72 comeback win over the Atlanta Dream, scoring 21 points on 8-9 shooting from the field and going 4-5 from three. Her performance was enough to earn high praise from her head coach, Sandy Brondello. 'We're encouraging her to shoot, obviously,' Brondello said after the game. 'I put her in the actions there cause she's the most pure shooter I've ever seen, and with her size at 6'4, her ability to come off a screen and just get balance and shoot it. It's beautiful.' Fiebich was a revelation last season as one of the best rookies in the WNBA. She quickly forced her way into the starting lineup and was a crucial player down the stretch as the Liberty captured their first championship in franchise history. This season, Fiebich got off to a slower start, joining the team just before the season opener when her overseas commitments ended. After scoring 20 total points through her first five games, she turned a corner to end May, putting in a 12-point, nine-rebound and three-block performance against the Washington Mystics. But even then, it was difficult for her to get into a groove, as she left to participate in EuroBasket in early June. The Liberty went 2-5 in her absence, with her return coinciding with the start of the team's recent 3-1 streak. 'If you haven't worked that out yet, I love everything about Leo and what she brings to this team,' Brondello added. 'She's the ultimate professional, how she comes ready to play and selfless.' Liberty forward Leonie Fiebich is showing her versatility Fiebich may be the most 'pure shooter' that her coach has ever seen, but she can do far more than shoot. In fact, when she's not scoring, Fiebich has made a gigantic impact defensively. Brondello had been critical of her team's defensive effort throughout its losing streak, but when Fiebich returned from EuroBasket, it became immediately clear that she is a difference-maker on that end. At 6'4, Fiebich has the length and versatility to guard anywhere on the court and has made a habit of getting into passing lanes or just disrupting the flow of the opponent's offense. 'She takes pride in defense, loves defense, so we love players like that, but we're gonna continue to grow on that offensive side,' Brondello said. From Fiebich's perspective, she likes defense because it's something she can control. As she explained, some nights her shot just isn't going to fall. Luck isn't nearly as much of a factor on the other end. 'If you go into a game with an offensive mindset, you never know if your shot's gonna fall or not,' she said. 'You never know if you will get the calls, and on defense you always know what you have to do, the aggression you play with and the intensity, that's just something you can control. I just don't want to rely on the uncontrollables on offense.' Related: Why the Liberty must sign Emma Meesseman

Liberty's Leonie Fiebich breaking out of her shell with expanded offensive game
We've got you covered on the Liberty beat Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Madeline Kenney about all things Liberty and WNBA. tRY IT NOW After Leonie Fiebich squeezed by Breanna Stewart's screen and left Allisha Gray stumbling behind her during Sunday's game, the German wing saw an open runway to the basket and attacked it like a running back through a hole. Fiebich laid it in for the Liberty's first basket of the game. Advertisement Later in the first quarter, Fiebich got a steal and then on the other end of the floor Stewart fed Fiebich, who, after a brief hesitation, knocked down a 3. That first quarter set the tone for the type of game Fiebich was going to have. Fiebich had eight points in the first half and played a major role in the Liberty's third-quarter rally that eventually led to their 79-72 win. She finished with a regular-season career-high 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting and 4-of-5 from deep. Leonie Fiebich reacts during the Liberty-Dream game on July 13, 2025. Michelle Farsi/New York Post Advertisement It came just a few days after Fiebich dropped 15 points in a win against the Aces. The past two games have been growth for Fiebich. She was determined and attacked the basket with velocity. She finished strong and was confident. 'Leo has a bag that's deeper than just a 3-and-D player and you're starting to see it especially in these past two games when she takes an iso opportunity and really gets downhill, gets to the basket,' Stewart said. 'But for Leo, it's all about confidence.' Advertisement With the way Fiebich plays, it's easy to forget that this is only her second WNBA season. The 25-year-old plays like a seasoned role player. But Sandy Brondello knows Fiebich has another level to reach. 'Love everything about Leo and what she brings to this team. She's the ultimate professional, how she comes ready to play and selfless,' Brondello said. 'We're encouraging her to shoot obviously, and put her in the actions there because she's the most pure shooter I've ever seen. And with her size, at 6-foot-4, her ability. If you come off a screen to just get balance and shoot it, it's beautiful.' Leonie Fiebich makes a layup during the Liberty-Dream game on July 13, 2025. Michelle Farsi/New York Post Advertisement Fiebich was annoyed last week because everyone had been pestering her — from her coaches and some teammates to media and fans — to be more aggressive in hunting for her shot. But that's never been Fiebich's approach to the game. On offense, she's a great floor spacer and the ball moves smoother when she's out there. But Fiebich prioritizes defense and shutting down opponents. She loves doing the dirty work and handling the unsung duties that often make her teammates shine. 'Honestly, I just have fun on defense. I'm just annoying my opponent,' Fiebich said. 'For me, if you go into a game with an offensive mindset, you never know if your shot is going to fall or not. You never know if you get the calls and on defense, you really always know what you have to do — the aggression you play with and the intensity — and that's just something you can control, and yeah, I just don't want to rely on the uncontrollables on offense.' Fiebich isn't a player that Brondello and her staff have to worry about when it comes to shot selection. The objective now is for the Liberty to continue to build up Fiebich's confidence as a scorer. 'Everyone is really happy when Leo is playing like that,' Marine Johannès said. 'Every night, she's just doing a great job, but she's also doing the dirty job. So yeah, tonight, seeing her get shots and be comfortable on the court was really good for us and I hope that it can be like that every day for her because it was really great.'

NEW YORK (AP) — Leonie Fiebich scored 21 points and the New York Liberty rallied from a 19-point deficit in the first half to beat the Atlanta Dream 79-72 on Sunday. Breanna Stewart added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Liberty (14-6). Advertisement Fiebich's hot shooting helped rally New York from an 11-point halftime deficit. Her consecutive 3-pointers near the end of the third quarter gave the Liberty their first lead since early in the game. New York was up 60-58 early in the fourth quarter before using a 12-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game. Kennedy Burke had five points during the burst and Nyara Sabally hit a 3-pointer that made it 70-60 with 5 minutes left. Atlanta (12-9) was able to get within four, but could get no closer. Allisha Gray scored 16 points to lead the Dream, who were missing All-Star Rhyne Howard because of a knee injury she suffered in Atlanta's previous game against Indiana. Brittney Griner added 10 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double with the Dream. SPARKS 92, SUN 88 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Kelsey Plum scored 18 of her 23 points in the second half, Azurá Stevens finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds and Los Angeles beat Connecticut to snap a 13-game losing streak against the Sun. Bria Hartley had a season-high 25 points and rookie Saniya Rivers scored a career-high 20 for Connecticut (3-18). Jacy Sheldon added 13 points and Aneesah Morrow 10. Morrow scored inside to give Connecticut an eight-point lead with 1:46 left in the first half but Jackson made a layup, Julie Allemand hit two free throws and Jackson made another bucket to make it 49-47 at halftime. Stevens scored eight points — including two 3-pointers — before Plum capped a 10-1 spurt with a layup that made it 57-50 with 6:47 left in the third quarter and the Sparks never again trailed. The Sun shot 50% from the field, while Los Angeles made 47%, but the Sparks grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and scored 14 second-chance points. Advertisement MYSTICS 74, STORM 69 SEATTLE (AP) — Brittney Sykes scored 10 of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, Sonia Citron added 17 points and Washington beat Seattle. Kiki Iriafen finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Washington (11-10) and her six double-doubles this season are tied with Chamique Holdsclaw for franchise's single-season rookie record. Ezi Magbegor scored a season-high 19 points, Nneka Ogwumike added 16 and Skylar Diggins had 10 for the Storm. Tiffany Mitchell, who was signed by Seattle on Thursday after the nine-year veteran was waived by Las Vegas on June 30, finished with 12 points. Advertisement Ogwumike made a layup to cut the deficit to 70-69 with 40.8 seconds to play but Sykes answered with a driving layup late in the shot clock before Diggins stepped out of bounds with 17 seconds remaining. Sykes made to free throws to cap the scoring. Diggins finished with four assists and moved into a tie with New York's Natasha Cloud for eighth in WNBA history with 1,638 career assists. The Mystics used a 15-4 run to take a 62-61 lead with 4:28 left in the game. Citron capped the spurt with a 3-pointer and then a driving layup.
