Paul McCartney's 1985 Live Aid performance, his first live show in five years, was nearly derailed by a tech glitch

Paul McCartney hadn't taken the stage in over five years when he sat down at his piano to sing 'Let It Be' for Live Aid on July 13, 1985, in a performance that was almost totally derailed by a single tech glitch. There the music legend was – performing live for the first time since his post-Beatles band Wings had broken up, and his lifelong friend and Beatles bandmate John Lennon had been assassinated – to sing 'Let It Be,' one of the last songs the Fab Four ever released… and minutes into the performance, McCartney's microphone died. 'One guy. A mic and a piano (and) a mic for the voice. Really simple. What happened?' Live Aid organizer and musician Bob Geldof recalled thinking at the time in CNN's 'Live Aid: When Rock 'n' Roll Took On the World.' Geldof added that he thought, 'Oh no, it's going to be a disaster.' All of the estimated 1.8 billion viewers tuning into the mega benefit concert couldn't even hear McCartney, let alone the massive crowd that stood before him at London's Wembley Stadium. Then something magical happened: the crowd started to sing along and help pick up the song for McCartney. But it wasn't just the crowd who saw that McCartney needed help, either. 'There were a bunch of people standing around and either Pete (Townshend, of The Who) or David (Bowie) said to me, 'Come on, let's help him.' Literally if you can think of a moment where 'I am not worthy' is beyond true, it's that moment,' Geldof recalled. Townshend, Bowie, Geldof and singer Alison Moyet huddled behind McCartney on stage to help him sing the song's final verses when the microphones started to work again, allowing the impromptu quintet – along with the singing Wembley crowd – to complete the song. Afterward, Townshend and McCartney hoisted Geldof on their shoulders before the Wembley Stadium headliners, including George Michael, Bono, members of The Who, Bowie, McCartney, Queen and many more, all joined together on stage to sing Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas' to close out the show. Return to the stage The Live Aid benefit was organized by musicians Geldof and Midge Ure to draw attention to a famine in Ethiopia. It spanned multiple locations, drew nearly two billion viewers around the world and raised more than US$125 million for relief efforts. While Geldof had already secured a lineup of the most famous and revered rock 'n roll musicians for Live Aid, he said in an interview with Ultimate Classic Rock earlier this month that he felt he needed a Beatle to participate and wrote McCartney a letter at the time outlining his case, asking him to play one song at the end of the show. 'I knew he must get a hundred requests to do things, but I really felt like the program would not be complete without him there. I was not writing to Paul McCartney, the man, I said, but to PAUL MCCARTNEY, the phenomenon,' Geldof explained. 'If he played, millions would watch who would not otherwise watch. That would mean money would come in that would not otherwise come in.' McCartney and his band Wings hadn't performed since 1979's Concerts for the People of Kampuchea, and shortly thereafter disbanded in 1981. McCartney hadn't taken the stage after that but did continue to release new music over the next few years. So when Geldof approached him about Live Aid, McCartney recalled telling him, 'I can't Bob, I haven't got a band together now.' Geldof, according to McCartney, didn't find that to be a problem at all, telling him, 'Well, you just sit at the piano and play your own number.' Ultimately, McCartney agreed. 'I just had to come. Simple as that,' McCartney said, adding that Geldof was also the person who chose the song that McCartney would sing. 'He's running the whole bloody show!' Geldof told Ultimate Classic Rock that 'there is a hierarchy in rock 'n' roll,' with the Beatles being at the top. 'So he goes on, one song, to give U.S. the benediction, to give U.S. the Beatles imprimatur, and of course it's 'Let It Be,' which I had asked him to do.' Live Aid wound up not just being McCartney's return for a one-off performance. He's been touring regularly ever since – even up until today, as McCartney, now 83, is set to continue his Get Back tour in the U.S. this fall. Turns out, the legendary musician isn't quite ready to just let it be. By Alli Rosenbloom, CNN

Paul McCartney hints at Got Back Tour 2025

Sir Paul McCartney appears to be teasing a 2025 Got Back Tour. The Beatles legend began the jaunt back in 2022 in the US, before hitting up South America and Australia, while he played a bunch of dates in the UK last year. In February this year, meanwhile, Macca put on a series of intimate concerts at New York's iconic Bowery Ballroom. The Let It Be hitmaker is now seemingly teasing new live dates after posting an image of guitar picks, one with his name on and the other reading "Got Back in 2025", on his Instagram Story on Wednesday (09.07.25). Macca also posted a link for fans to sign up to his mailing list for the latest tour news. Meanwhile, McCartney has co-authored a book about his time in Wings, set for release in November. The icon formed the rock band in 1971, after the Beatles split, and McCartney has shared his experiences in a new book called Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run. The chart-topping star said: "I'm so very happy to be transported back to the time that was Wings and relive some of our madcap adventures through this book. "Starting from scratch after the Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better I thought, 'OK, this is really good.' We proved Wings could be a really good band. To play to huge audiences in the same way the Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz." McCartney formed Wings with his wife Linda, drummer Denny Seiwell, and guitarist Denny Laine. The group released seven studio albums - including 'Band on the Run', 'London Town' and 'Venus and Mars' - between 1971 and 1981. McCartney co-authored the tome with historian Ted Widmer, who said: "Wings was about love, family, friendship and artistic growth, often in the face of tremendous adversity."

Social media praise Akash Deep and skipper Shubman Gill after India beat England: ‘Pressure? Handled. History? Made'

Social media exploded in celebration as India secured a thumping 336-run victory over England at Edgbaston — their biggest away win by runs and their first-ever Test triumph at the iconic venue in Birmingham. The win, which levelled the five-match series 1-1, saw fans and cricketers alike showering praise on the team, with Akash Deep, Shubman Gill, and Mohammed Siraj earning the loudest applause online. Akash Deep took 10 wickets in the match Right-arm fast bowler Akash Deep, in particular, stole the spotlight with a dream performance. The pacer picked up six wickets in the second innings and returned with a 10-wicket match haul — becoming only the second Indian bowler to achieve the feat in England. His journey from Sasaram in Bihar to the international stage has become the stuff of legend. Outside the stadium, an English fan captured hearts with a musical tribute to the rising star. In a now-viral video, the supporter sang a cheeky reworking of The Beatles' Let It Be: 'Akash Deep, Akash Deep, Bowling England Out, Akash Deep.' The video was widely shared, with fans applauding both the sentiment and the performance it honoured. The new captain for team India in Tests, Shubman Gill too, made headlines with a sensational batting display, scoring 269 and 161 across the two innings — a rare feat that made him only the second batter, after Australia's Allan Border, in the history of International cricket, to register 150-plus scores in both innings of a Test match. He also became the youngest captain from Asia to rigester a win in Siraj chipped in with a crucial six-wicket haul in England's first innings, ensuring India maintained control throughout the match. From viral songs and personal milestones to a landmark team win, India's Edgbaston triumph wasn't just another Test victory — it was a cricketing moment that lit up the internet and etched itself into the history books.

A fan dedicated a special song to India pacer Akash Deep who made the England batters dance to his tunes on Day 5 of the 2nd Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The 28-year-old pacer registered match figures of 10/187 as India beat England by 336 runs to level the five-match series at 1-1. After the match, an England fan dedicated a special song for Akash outside Edgbaston. In a viral video, the fan was seen singing his own version of Let It Be by The Beatles, honouring Akash. "Akash Deep Akash Deep Bowling England Out Akash Deep," the fan was heard singing. The video caught the attention of fans on social media, and the man was praised for serenading a song in Akash's honour. The Poms do have a sense of humour : 'Akash Deep Akash Deep Bowling England Out Akash Deep' (In Let It Be tune) — Sameer (@BesuraTaansane) July 6, 2025 Akash dedidcated his stellar show with the ball to his sister, who is battling cancer for the past two months. "I have not spoken about this with anyone but two months back, my sister was diagnosed with cancer. She will be very happy with my performance and this will bring some smiles back," he controlled his emotions while talking to Cheteshwar Pujara on 'Jio Hotstar'. "Every time I picked up the ball, her thoughts and picture crossed my mind. This performance is dedicated to her. I want to tell her, 'Sis, we are all with you'," he added. Speaking about the match, he was happy that the plans and the processes that he put in place worked out wonderfully during the game. "My main aim was to hit the seam on hard lengths and let the ball move in. In case of Joe Root, my aim was to bowl from wide off the crease and get it to shape away. "In case of Harry Brook, I knew that he is committed on the backfoot and wanted to hit the seam hard and on fuller length, getting it to move in," he explained the planning behind his wicket-taking deliveries.
