LifeServe encouraging first-time donors to be a part of Blood Donor Day

DES MOINES, Iowa — LifeServe Blood Center kicks off Blood Donor Day next week. The event encourages first-time and regular donors to roll up their sleeves to save lives. You can donate blood at LifeServe's locations in Des Moines, Urbandale, and Johnston on June 19th. How Polk County health officials plan to defend against measles Organizers say that the event allows those who haven't donated before to learn about the different ways to give blood. 'You know, there are different components. You give whole blood. That's the traditional spend five, 10 minutes in a chair, and then you walk out. Double red cells are a little more, you know, it's about double the time, but you're giving red cells to, you know, trauma patients, to newborns who need those transfusions, to mothers who had difficult birthing issues. And then there's platelets. And that's every two weeks you can give platelets, and that's removing the white blood cells and the platelets. And those are going to help cancer patients, you know, treating life-threatening illnesses,' said Tim Paluch, Lifeserve Blood Center. LifeServe is working with community partners to host raffles for items like Adventureland passes, botanical garden memberships, and even Hinterland can sign up to participate in Blood Donor Day here. Augustana Lutheran Church holding rummage sale to raise money for new HVAC system

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A local church is trying to raise funds for a new air conditioning system. Augustana Lutheran Church held the first day of a two-day rummage sale on Friday night in the church's gymnasium. The sale had many items to choose from, including furniture, kitchenware, and children and adults' clothing. Some of the larger items were a couch, a rocking chair, and two electric fireplaces. LifeServe partnering with local firefighters for blood drives Church officials say they hope to raise around $180,000, which is the estimated cost for a new HVAC system. 'We've had this HVAC system for about 50 years, and so the fact that it's kind of giving up on us is not completely unexpected,' pastor Chuck Meyer said. 'The fact that it is giving up is a bummer though, so raising this money and having all these people come has been a blessing for us.' The rummage sale continues Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church will also celebrate its 150th anniversary later this year. The building is not only a local landmark, but is also on the National Register of Historic Places. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. LifeServe partnering with local firefighters for blood drives

JOHNSTON, Iowa (KCAU) — LifeServe Blood Center is partnering with area firefighters for Firefighter Appreciation Blood Drives this May. International Firefighters' Day is observed every year on May 4 and to celebrate, LifeServe Blood Center is partnering with firefighters from Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Illinois for a slew of blood drives. There will be multiple mobile blood drives held from April 23 through May 2. Additionally, from May 1 through 3, there will be blood drives hosted at all 14 LifeServe Blood Center Donor Centers. The goal of this event, according to LifeServe, is to honor firefighters while helping provide much need blood to community hospitals. Governor Reynolds not seeking reelection 'Firefighters are committed to the protection of life and property and put their lives on the line regularly for the sake of others,' Life Serve Blood Center Director of PR and Marketing Tim Paluch said. 'Their commitment is something that everyone can appreciate and support. To make sure we're prepared for every situation, it's important that donors give blood regularly, especially as we head into the summer.' Mitchell Technical College blood drive brings in 23 units

Feb. 28—MITCHELL — Organizers of the blood drive held Wednesday, Feb. 26 at Mitchell Technical College are touting the event as a success, with the drive bringing in nearly two-dozen units of life-saving blood. The 23 units collected, donated by 18 students and staff at the two-year college, are enough to save up to 69 lives. Young donors continue to be a vital resource for blood donation, said Abbie Arneson, territory representative for LifeServe Blood Center. Mitchell Technical College students are playing a large role in the local community by taking time to donate. Their efforts help maintain a stable blood supply for local hospitals, and faculty members serve as role models by demonstrating the importance of giving back, she said. "While only 3% of the population donates blood, an astonishing 90% of people will need a transfusion at some point in their lives. Many of our most dedicated donors are aging out of eligibility, which is why young donors are crucial in ensuring hospitals have the resources they need," Arneson said. In addition, event organizer LifeServe recognized several individuals for their contributions to the cause. Five individuals were recognized as first-time donors, including Connor Bender, Michael Gerving, Adam Kanable, Henry Putterbaugh and Autumn Marsh. Donna Appletoft was recognized as a Galloneer, as well. "It's inspiring to see new donors stepping up, as well as loyal donors reaching incredible milestones," Arneson said. "Every donation counts, and we are so grateful for the commitment of the Mitchell Tech community." Arenson stressed that although the most recent blood drive was another success, the demand for blood is constant. She said all eligible donors are encouraged to continue giving, noting that blood has a limited shelf life and hospitals rely on ongoing donations to meet patient needs. Those interested in contributing can schedule an appointment at the LifeServe Donor Center, located at 819 E. Spruce Street in Mitchell. The center is open Mondays from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Donors can schedule an appointment by visiting or by calling 1-800-287-4903.

Iowa woman saved by blood donations has special reunion with donors

WEBSTER CITY, Iowa — An Iowa woman whose life was saved by blood donations had a special Valentine's Day reunion with the very people who donated. In 2021 Beth Ades was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), which is a serious blood disorder. As a result, Ades had to undergo multiple stem cell transplants and blood transfusions before receiving a bone marrow transplant. Now, Ades says she's thriving and is celebrating the blood donors who helped save her life. Record number of vehicles crashed into Iowa snowplows in Wednesday's storm On Friday, in partnership with LifeServe Blood Center, Beth's 3rd ReBirthday Bash Blood Drive took place at P&P Electric in Webster City. In attendance were the very people who donated the blood that then went to saving Ades' life. Both Ades and one of the donors said the reunion was an incredible experience. 'It was incredible. I've been looking forward to this day for so long, and I couldn't hold it together I was a mess, lots of crying and hugs, but they're forever apart of me. They're a huge part of the reason that I'm alive and I'm here today,' Ades said. 'It gives a face to a receiver. I donate to try and help people and everything and by meeting Beth it makes me feel good, like I'm doing something,' James Henning said, who donated platelets. If you'd like to sign up to donate blood you can do so by visiting LifeServe's website.
