File Photo by Vince Mignott/EPA-EFE June 6 (UPI) -- Arsenal signed Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes to a four-year contract extension, the Premier League soccer franchise announced Friday. "It's an amazing club," Gabriel told the team website. "I'm so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club. I love the fans, my teammates, I love this stadium. "I'm so proud. Thank you for all the support." Gabriel, 27, joined the Gunners in 2020. He helped anchor a defense that allowed the fewest goals (34) in the Premier League for the second consecutive season in 2024-25. He also contributed 20 goals over 210 career appearances for the Gunners. The veteran center back made his senior career debut in 2016 for Brazil's Avai. He also played for Lille of France's Ligue 1 before loans to Ligue 2 club Troyes and Croatia's Dinamo Zagreb. "I arrived here as a young player and it's almost five years at this club," Gabriel said. "I've learned a lot here. I'm so proud of myself as well to have worn the captain's armband. It's an amazing journey. "I'm so happy to continue this journey and hopefully win some trophies for this club." The Gunners (20-4-14) finished second in the 2024-25 Premier League standings, 10 points behind first-place Liverpool (25-4-9). Gabriel sustained a hamstring injury during an April 1 win over Fulham and missed the remainder of the 2024-25 campaign, but said he expects to be healthy for next season. "It's going very well," Gabriel said of his recovery. "It was a bit difficult for me, but I know it's time to recharge. I'm feeling much better now and I'm so excited for next season." The Gunners will take on AC Milan in a friendly July 23 in Singapore.

MET IN THE MIDDLE Rangers face major battle to land key summer target as league champions plan to hijack swoop Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) RANGERS face a battle to land Brazilian midfielder Metinho. SunSport revealed last month how the 22-year-old is on the radar of new Ibrox owners 49ers Enterprises as a major summer target. Sign up for the Rangers newsletter Sign up 1 Metinho in action for Basel last season Credit: Alamy Metinho has flagged up to them on the back of his performances for Basel during a successful loan from Troyes. The midfield man was outstanding as they landed their first title since 2017 so the Swiss champions have indicated they want to keep him permanently. Ligue 2 side Troyes, part of the City Group, are willing to do a deal for the player, who arrived in Europe aged 18 for £4 million from Fluminense. Metinho has had previous loans to Lommel and Sparta Rotterdam in Belgium and Holland, but it's in Switzerland he's found his best form. Rangers are one of the clubs who have expressed an interest in securing his signature, but Champions League-bound Basel are serious rivals. They are keen to move first and with interest from Scotland as well as the English Championship, are preparing to launch a bid. 49ers bosses have had new sporting director Kevin Thelwell working on recruitment plans while they waited on the takeover being officially ratified. And despite not having a new boss in place, they have been preparing a comprehensive list of players to present to him on day one in the job. Metinho is prominent in their thoughts, but other clubs are circling now ahead of a summer battle for his services. Saint-Étienne make Irvin Cardona move permanent
Foot Mercato understands that AS Saint-Étienne have made Irvin Cardona's (27) move to the club permanent. The Frenchman returned to Saint-Étienne, where he spent the second half of the 2023/24 season, on loan in January. He had joined Espanyol on loan at the start of last season, however, that loan was cut short by parent club Augsburg in the winter, allowing Cardona to re-join Les Verts. Advertisement Despite netting five goals in 15 Ligue 1 appearances, he could not prevent Saint-Étienne from making a swift return to Ligue 2. However, he will still make his move to the club permanent. As per Foot Mercato, ASSE have triggered the buy option included in the deal. He will therefore join in a deal worth €2.5m and sign a contract that will run until the summer of 2028. The centre-forward will be looking to guide Les Verts back into the first division next season. GFFN | Luke Entwistle

Dunkerque's Luís Castro wants to join Lens after rejecting Shakhtar Donetsk
USL Dunkerque's Luís Castro turned down the opportunity to become Shakhtar Donetsk's new manager, however, the Portuguese technician is interested in another job in France, according to a report from Foot Mercato. Castro exceeded all expectations this season, taking Dunkerque into the promotion play-offs in Ligue 2. His side came unstuck against FC Metz in the dying moments and, as a result, will compete in the second tier once again next season. However, will that be with or without Castro? Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk had hoped to recruit the Dunkerque manager as a successor to Marino Pusic, however, Castro refused. Arda Turan has now been confirmed in the post. But that does not mean that the Portuguese manager won't leave Dunkerque during the off season. RC Lens remain without a manager. Will Still left the club to join Southampton earlier this month after just one season. Castro is open to joining Les Sang et Or. Castro's representatives have held talks with the club's new sporting director, Jean-Louis Leca, however, there are other candidates in the running, notably former Olympique Lyonnais manager Pierre Sage. Lyon's Malick Fofana a target for Liverpool
It is no secret that Olympique Lyonnais need to sell this summer. There is still an administrative relegation to Ligue 2 looming, whilst, despite qualifying for the UEFA Europa League, it is yet to be confirmed that the authorities will give the club the green light to compete in the tournament. Rayan Cherki is the player being most heavily linked with a departure. The Lyon academy product confirmed that he was likely to depart this summer, following OL's win on the final day of the season. He is attracting interest from across Europe, including from Premier League champions Liverpool. The Merseyside club are also interested in his teammate, Malick Fofana (20), according to The Belgium international is considered as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz, should the Colombian winger leave the club during the of-season. Despite Liverpool's interest, Fofana isn't considered a 'priority' for now, as per Tavolieri. The Belgian scored 11 goals in 41 games in all competitions for OL last season. GFFN | Luke Entwistle
