Michigan football lands linebacker from Ivy League
The post Michigan football lands linebacker from Ivy League appeared first on ClutchPoints. While an 8-5 record is good for some programs, it doesn't cut it for the Michigan football team. As the team looks to improve in head coach Sherrone Moore's second season, it's clear that a few positions could use more help. Luckily, more help is on the way for defensive coordinator Wink Martindale's unit. According to On3's Transfer Portal page on X (formerly Twitter), former Columbia linebacker Rocco Milia has signed with the Wolverines. 'BREAKING: Columbia transfer LB Rocco Milia has signed with Michigan, @PeteNakos_ reports,' posted the transfer focused account on Friday. 'Milia totaled 49 tackles last season.' Milia will join the Michigan football program after four years at Columbia. The 49 tackles he notched were over seven games. His best season was 2023, when he had 54 tackles and three interceptions. At the moment, it looks as if Martindale's starters at linebacker are close to being set. All four spots in his scheme have seniors or graduate transfers with the number ones. How big of an impact could Milia have with the Wolverines? Could Rocco Milia carve out role with Michigan football? Even if he's not in a starting role, Milia can still contribute. Especially if he can crack the second string. Martindale looks to rotate through his front seven defenders to keep them fresh. It's a technique that he utilized in the pros as well. As long as he stays healthy, Milia will have a chance to make his name with the Michigan football team. Moore and Martindale might continue to look to the portal to buttress their current roster. With the season opener just a few weeks out, the Wolverines will need to have all hands on deck. The team is looking to get back into Big Ten title contention, as well as compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff once again. As they attempt to live up to 2023's CFP winning squad, it will be up to Milia and the rest of the defense to help lead the way. Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.

34 DAYS TO 2025 KICKOFF: Weston Polk
Yes, I know today is actually 33 days until kickoff. Please bear with me this week as I work to catch back up. I had a medical emergency Friday night and have been out of commission for the past three days. In order for me to keep up with the Countdown, I will be taking an indefinite hiatus from the Protest Playoff posts until I'm feeling better. Position: Linebacker Previous College: None Projection: Redshirt Status: On Scholarship Weston Polk (b. Jan. 17, 2006) is a speedy young linebacker from Coppell (Texas) High School who plans on majoring in agribusiness. He is likely to redshirt and not play in 2025. Polk prepped under head coach Antonio Wiley at Coppell, where he was rated the 24th-best inside linebacker in the country for the Class of 2025 by ESPN. Named the district defensive player of the year as a senior, he also was a first-team all-district honoree as a junior and an honorable mention pick as a sophomore. Polk tallied 183 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, seven sacks, an interception, four passes defended, three forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in his career, which included an 86-tackle, 15-TFL effort as a senior, leading Coppell to the regional round of the state playoffs. He also competed in track and field in high school. Polk signed with K-State over offers from Arkansas State, California, Houston, Iowa State, Memphis, North Texas, Oregon State, TCU, Texas State, Tulsa and UTEP, as well as interest from Notre Dame. His lead recruiters were defensive coordinator Joe Klanderman and his new position coach, Steve Stanard. Said Gabe Brooks of 247Sports, regarding Polk's athletic potential at the next level: Athletic second-level defender with experience at linebacker, safety, and even edge. Perhaps his most impressive trait is ability to suddenly redirect in pursuit. Combine testing data reflect that attribute as well. More of a space defender than man defender at this point, but owns the athletic makeup to succeed in both in the long term. Instincts. Simply put, Polk is a natural at his position. You don't rack up the statistics that he did at that level in Texas without having a true feel of the game. Physical between the tackles, Polk processes his angles quickly and times his blitzes well. Watching his game is incredibly fluid for a high school linebacker. Rarely makes the wrong read.
