Ling Ching shocks fourth seed, Justin flops at Canada Open

KUALA LUMPUR: There were contrasting fortunes for Malaysia's rising shuttlers at the Canada Open on Wednesday, as Justin Hoh suffered another early exit, while Wong Ling Ching pulled off what is probably the biggest upset of the day. World No. 43 Justin, touted as Malaysia's next big hope in men's singles, fell to Taiwan's world No. 71 Wang Po Wei 25-23, 21-10 in the opening round, a result that underlined growing concerns over his inconsistency on World Tour. World No. 87 Ling Ching produced a stunning comeback to shock fourth seed and world No. 31 Line Christophersen of Denmark 12-21, 21-18, 21-18, marking one of the biggest wins of her career and sending her into the second round of the women's singles. Justin was one of four Malaysians handpicked to compete in the back-to-back North American Super 300 tournaments, with many top contenders opting to skip the swing. But the 21-year-old failed to capitalise, having only reached the second round of the US Open last week. Against Po Wei, Justin held the upper hand in the first game and led 19-16, even holding game point at 21-20 and 22-21 but failed to close it out. The missed opportunity appeared to affect his morale, and he faded in the second game. To lose in such fashion, especially to a lower-ranked opponent in a favourable draw, is a wake-up call for the former junior world No. 1. In contrast, 21-year-old Ling Ching showed grit and composure to come back from a game down to take out Christophersen - a former European Championhips' silver medallist and a regular on the World Tour. The win sends a strong signal of her potential at the senior level. At the US Open, Ling Ching had also defeated world No. 32 Hsu Wen Chi of Taiwan in the first round. Elsewhere, world No. 98 Eogene Ewe received a walkover from Japan's world No. 40 Takuma Obayashi and will face Germany's world No. 81 Matthias Kicklitz next. The 20-year-old is bidding to reach his second World Tour quarter-final after the Vietnam Open Super 100 last year. K. Letshanaa also continued her solid form by brushing aside American Ishika Jaiswal 21-13, 21-5. The 21-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 45 this week, will take on India's Shriyanshi Valishetty in the second round as she eyes back-to-back quarter-final appearances.

Letshanaa stuns ex-world champ Okuhara as Malaysians shine at US Open

KUALA LUMPUR: National men's singles shuttler Justin Hoh enjoyed a flawless start at the US Open, but it was women's singles duo K. Letshanaa and Wong Ling Ching, who truly stole the show in Council Bluffs, Iowa on Wednesday. World No. 43 Justin needed just 27 minutes to dispatch Belgium's Julien Carraggi 21-10, 21-10 in the Super 300 tournament's opening round, but all eyes quickly turned to Letshanaa and Ling Ching after their shock wins over seeded opponents. World No. 50 Letshanaa turned on the style to beat Japan's eighth seed and 2017 world champion Nozomi Okuhara 21-8, 21-19. While Okuhara, 30, is no longer the force she once was - having also reached world No. 1 and won a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics - the victory remains a big feather in Letshanaa's cap. Ling Ching, meanwhile, pulled off an even bigger upset by edging world No. 30 and fourth seed Hsu Wen Chi of Taiwan 21-17, 19-21, 22-20 in a 66-minute battle. It marked one of the most significant wins of the world No. 96's career. Letshanaa will next face world No. 49 Aakarshi Kashyap of India for a place in the quarter-finals, while Ling Ching aims to build on her momentum against Bulgaria's Kaloyana Nalbantova, ranked No. 75. The last time Ling Ching made it to a Super 300 quarter-final was at the 2023 Syed Modi International in India. Letshanaa, meanwhile, will be eyeing her second last-eight appearance of the season after reaching the same stage at the Taiwan Open last month. Justin, too, will be looking to maintain his strong form when he takes on Taiwan's world No. 76 Liao Jhuo Fu in the second round.

Eogene and Ling Ching capture titles in Slovenia

Previous Next KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian shuttlers Eogene Ewe Eon and Wong Ling Ching won a title each at the Slovenia Open on Sunday. Eogene captured the men's singles title while Ling Ching bagged the women's singles title in the International Series-level tournament — their first senior achievements. World No. 113 Eogene beat South Korea's world No. 252 Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in a hard-fought, hour-long final. The win came as a much-needed morale boost for Eogene, who suffered exits in five previous tournaments earlier this year. World No. 100 Ling Ching enjoyed a more straightforward path to her title, dispatching Indonesia's world No. 140 Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15 in just 38 minutes. The Sarawak Malaysia Games champion's Slovenia success is a vindication of her decision to resume her badminton career. Ling Ching left the national set-up in November to focus on her studies, but rejoined the Academy Badminton Malaysia earlier this year. Eogene and Ling Ching will next compete in the Austria Open — which begins on Thursday.
