Carnoustie Golf Links snaps up popular town centre restaurant
Carnoustie Golf Links has bought a popular town centre restaurant in a move it hopes will restore the venue as a favourite with locals and visitors. Links bosses have confirmed the purchase of the former Maxibell tapas bar at 5 Park Avenue. It sits just off the High Street and close to the legendary Championship Course. The premises have been a busy spot since its original days as the Golf Inn. But the restaurant closed last year and was later offered at auction with a £150,000 starting price. Links management are now developing new plans for the restaurant. The move comes after major changes to the running of the Open Championship venue. A new company has been formed to run the courses and resort hotel. Carnoustie Golf Heritage and Hospitality Group Limited has promised huge investment to secure the return of the event to Angus. And the Links said it is 'excited' about a comeback for Maxibell's. A spokesperson said: 'This decision reflects our ongoing commitment to supporting the community and preserving valued local institutions. 'Maxibell's has long been a place of connection and joy for many. 'We felt it was important to safeguard its legacy, ensure its continued success and to contribute positively to the community. 'We believe that this is a special opportunity for us to support something that means a lot to people. 'We're excited about the positive impact this will have both now and into the future.' 'We are currently in the process of exploring renovation works, including carrying out necessary surveys to assess the building and its facilities. 'We are working through this as quickly as we can and our aim is to re-open and welcome guests as soon as possible.' CGHHG now operate the golf assets and Carnoustie Golf Hotel as a single entity. In January, Angus Council agreed the biggest ever change to the way the council-owned courses are run. The Links said a new deal was essential to secure the external investment needed for Carnoustie to retain its place on The Open rota. A £3 million spa upgrade at Carnoustie Golf Hotel was completed earlier this year. Links chief executive Michael Wells said the investment was a 'sign of things to come' from its new owners.

More than $95K in scholarships awarded to local students by Crown Jewels Links chapter
More than 20 local students cashed in on money for college thanks to an organization of women dedicated to community service. The Crown Jewels Chapter of the Links awarded more than $95,000 to area high school seniors. From education to employment, Charlotte program offers jobs, benefits Scholarship recipients completed applications and interviews to compete for the funds to continue their education. Jade Smith plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill and received $20,000. 'I'm really passionate about community service, leadership,' Smith said. 'I'm so excited to be honored here by the Links. It's an incredible honor and opportunity and I'm so grateful for this experience.' The students were recognized at the 10th Annual Crowning Achievements Program, along with some important community partners. Bucs second in regional, Purgahn ties for third place

(Rodrick Anderson / American Press) The Barbe High girls golf team didn't get the regional title they wanted, but they kept their hopes for a state championship alive after placing second at the Division I, Region I tournament on Tuesday at Mallard Cove Golf Club. 'I think they will play better next week because they know what is on the line now,' Barbe coach Bob Corley said. Blustery conditions led to no under-par rounds. Barbe finished with a 160, eight shots behind regional champion and defending state champion Benton. Corley said his players did well against the windy conditions. 'This course usually plays pretty tough because the wind blows so much,' he said. 'They play on it some, but not a ton. 'If you get yourself in bad positions, your score can go up really quick. They didn't have any real big blowups. Couple of them had some doubles, but they held it together. They can play better. They just wanted a chance to play next week.' Mattie Purgahn led the Bucs with a 78 to finish tied for third with Ruston's Kate Boersma. After bogies on Nos. 10 and 12, Purgahn finished her round with six consecutive pars. Maggie Dressler and Cassidy Scroggins finished tied for fifth place with Tioga's Morgan Goudeau at 82. Benton had the top two medalists in Abigail McWilliams, who had the low round of the day at 2-over 74, and Grace Goodwin (77). The state tournament tees off Monday and Tuesday at Les Vieux Chenes in Lafayette. Sam Houston's Emmi Marceaux and South Beauregard's Brielle Grant qualified for the state tournament as individuals. Grant shot a 91, while Marceaux finished with a 92. Division II, Region I Southwest Louisiana had a one-two finish at Frenchman's Bend in Sterlington. Westlake won its second consecutive regional team title and beat runner-up St. Louis Catholic 172-180. St. Louis' Reese Crooks edged Westlake's Ali Evans for individual medalist honors by one stroke with a 9-over-par 81. St Andrews to cut Old Course fees to £42.50 a round for Scottish golfers
