Defamation case: AAP leader's wife penalised over non-appearance
A Delhi court on Wednesday imposed a fine of ₹5,000 on Lipika Mitra, wife of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti, for skipping the hearing of her criminal defamation case filed against Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. In a final opportunity for the complainant to file a response, the court will next hear the matter on August 2. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal of the Rouse Avenue district court noted that the date and time were fixed according to the convenience of both parties in the last hearing. 'None is present on behalf of the complainant side, and even none appeared on behalf of the complainant side through videoconferencing (VC),' the judge said. The matter pertains to a complaint filed by Ms. Mitra, who had alleged that during the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Ms. Sitharaman had made and published 'defamatory, derogatory and libellous remarks' in print and electronic media against her, which–– tarnished the image of Mr. Bharti and impacted his chances of winning from New Delhi constituency.

The complaint claimed that Sitharaman made "defamatory, false, and malicious statements" in a press conference on May 17, 2024, with the sole intention to tarnish the reputation of Bharti and weaken his chances of winning in the general elections. According to the complaint, the utterances were made "solely with an intent to hurt the complainant and her husband" for political gains to the BJP's candidate and political loss to the complainant's husband during the 2024 Lok Sabha election. The accused, it said, spoke about the matrimonial discord of the complainant and her husband but withheld the information of their reunion and living together happily.

Delhi court issues notice to Nirmala Sitharaman in defamation case by Somnath Bharti's wife
A Delhi court has issued notice to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a criminal defamation case filed against her by Lipika Mitra, wife of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti's wife. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Paras Dalal of Rouse Avenue Courts on Thursday (May 22) issued notice to Ms. Sitharaman. 'Matter is at the stage of cognisance and in compliance of first proviso to Section 223 BNSS, the proposed accused is to be given opportunity of being heard,' the court said. The complainant had alleged that, during the Lok Sabha polls in 2024, the Minister had made and published defamatory, derogatory and libellous remarks in print and electronic media against her and the same were broadcasted in two TV channels. It is alleged that the statements made by the Union Minister were intended to tarnish the image of the complainant's husband and impact his chances of winning from New Delhi parliamentary constituency as the INDIA bloc candidate. It added that the statements caused immense mental anguish to Mr. Bharti and damaged his public standing as an elected representative. The case is filed under under Sections 356(1) and 356(2) of BNS. The next hearing of the case will take place on June 12.

Somnath Bharti's wife Lipika Mitra files defamation case against FM Sitharaman
Lipika Mitra , the wife of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Somnath Bharti , has filed a criminal complaint against Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman before a court here and accused her of defamation. Noting that "the proposed accused is to be given opportunity of being heard", Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Paras Dalal issued notice on May 19 to Sitharaman for June 12. "Fresh case for making and publishing defamatory, derogatory and libelous remarks in print and electronic media against the complainant received by way of assignment. It be checked and registered," he noted.
