Why Use Paint When You Can Have A Full Carbon-Fiber Mustang?
You know how young car enthusiasts often dream up wild ideas, like, 'Why don't they just make a whole car out of carbon fiber?' Well, Ford has actually done it. That childish fantasy has now become a road-going reality in the form of the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon — a machine that wears its carbon weave proudly and unapologetically. The Mustang GTD was already the most radical Mustang ever built, but Ford wasn't done. The new Liquid Carbon variant ditches paint altogether, leaving nothing but the raw carbon-fiber bodywork on display. Even the doors swap their sheet metal for bonded carbon fiber. The result? A weight saving of around 13 pounds compared to the Carbon Series with the Performance Package. It might not sound like much, but in the world of high-performance cars, every single pound matters. And then there's the look. With its flawless weave running seamlessly from hood to roof, across the wing and rear deck, the GTD Liquid Carbon is more than just a car — it's a piece of carbon art. Park it next to a Ferrari or a Porsche, and it doesn't whisper for attention, it shouts: bring it on. The Liquid Carbon package comes bundled with the Performance Package, meaning buyers get 20-inch magnesium wheels, Black Brembo brakes etched with the GTD logo, added aero elements, and reduced sound insulation to shave off more weight. Underneath, the beast is powered by Ford's supercharged 5.2-liter V8, pushing out a monstrous 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a rear-mounted eight-speed transaxle and a semi-active pushrod suspension system, this Mustang has more in common with a hypercar than a classic pony car. Ford even claims it's capable of a sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap — putting it in the league of racing legends. Step inside, and the theme continues. The cabin mixes black leather with Dinamica suede, while Hyper Lime stitching on the seats, doors, and steering wheel adds a sharp contrast. It's raw and performance-focused, but still unmistakably premium. Deliveries of the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon are set to begin in October, joining other exclusive editions like the Spirit of America. While pricing hasn't been revealed, expect it to soar well above the GTD's already eye-watering $327,000 starting price. So, is it worth it? For those who once dreamed of a car made entirely of carbon fiber — and for anyone chasing the ultimate Mustang experience — the Liquid Carbon is nothing less than a dream turned real.

Ford unveils new Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon at Laguna Seca
'Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon is the ultimate expression of the Mustang GTD's hi-tech, high-performance construction and is a reminder of the race derived, cutting edge capability that sits beneath the surface of every Mustang GTD,' said Mustang GTD chief programme engineer Greg Goodall. 'The Mustang GTD is a great-looking car and now it stands out more with its striking exposed carbon body and functional aero elements.' Like the Carbon Series, the Liquid Carbon's weave lines up down the midline of the bonnet, roof, rear deck and rear wing. The pattern carries through the fenders and side panels, giving the whole body a deliberate, uniform finish. Other bespoke details include black Brembo brake calipers, anodised body trim and gloss black GTD script. As with the Mustang GTD Spirit of America, Ford's Performance package is fitted as standard equipment. 'High-performance requires high-precision. When we were designing the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon, it was essential that these small details were present, because they speak to the care and attention required to build a vehicle such as the Mustang GTD and to compete and win on the world's stage with the Mustang GT3,' said Mustang GTD design manager Anthony Colard.

Ford unveils new Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon at Laguna Seca
California's legendary Laguna Seca Raceway provided the backdrop on Thursday for the debut of Ford's latest high performance Mustang, the GTD Liquid Carbon. It is the newest derivative in the GTD line-up and one that wears its carbon fibre bodywork unpainted, giving the car a raw, track-bred look while shaving off weight. Carbon fibre is no stranger to the racing world. It is the go to material in series such as IMSA, where the GTD's inspiration, the Mustang GT3, competes. On the Liquid Carbon, skipping the paint booth and replacing the doors' sheet metal with bonded carbon fibre cuts about 5.89kg compared with a GTD Carbon Series fitted with the Performance package. The interior mixes black leather with Dinamica microfibre suede, stitched in contrasting Hyper Lime across the seats, door panels, centre console, instrument panel and steering wheel. A reflective gradient strip down the centre of each seat adds a touch of contrast. With the Liquid Carbon's arrival, the Mustang GTD range now spans four variants: the standard GTD, Spirit of America, Carbon Series and this new exposed carbon edition.

Ford reveals a new race car inspired trim for its $325,000 Mustang
Ford Motor Co. has revealed a new trim it will offer on its most expensive and fastest Mustang — the Mustang GTD. The Dearborn-based automaker revealed the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon trim on Aug. 14 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, California. Ford chose this location for the reveal because this new trim is race-inspired. Ford spokesman Brandon Turkus said the Mustang GTD has a starting price of $325,000. The company is not sharing pricing for specific trims or options, but the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon trim is expected to come to market in October. This Liquid Carbon trim will use lightweight carbon fiber, a technology that plays a critical role in the GTD's body and performance, the company said in a release. Ford noted that carbon fiber is preferred for race cars' bodies. The Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon "skips a trip to the paint booth" Ford said by replacing paint with sheet metal in the doors. The bonded carbon-fiber saves 13 pounds of weight compared to a Mustang GTD Carbon Series with the Performance package. This weight reduction delivers better aerodynamics. 'Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon is the ultimate expression of the Mustang GTD's high-tech, high-performance construction and is a reminder of the race-derived, cutting-edge capability that sits beneath the surface of every Mustang GTD,' Mustang GTD Chief Program Engineer Greg Goodall said in a statement. Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon will have an exposed carbon body and functional aerodynamics, Goodall said. It features a black Brembo brake caliper, matching an anodized body with gloss-black GTD script. Anodizing is a process that converts a metal surface into "a decorative, durable, corrosion-resistant, anodic oxide finish," according to Ford said the performance package will be standard on the Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon trim. The new Ford Mustang GTD ‘Liquid Carbon' is here to terrorise 911 GT3s
The new Ford Mustang GTD 'Liquid Carbon' is here to terrorise 911 GT3s Featuring a carbon fibre weave fit for a T-1000 Skip 13 photos in the image carousel and continue reading Turn on Javascript to see all the available pictures. 1 / 13 This is not a car. This is a Porsche 911 GT3 RS's nightmare fuel. Welcome to the Ford Mustang GTD 'Liquid Carbon', a machine so scary it needs its own horror movie. Despite being named after a friendly diesel Golf, it's Ford's way of making its Nürburgring charger even more badass, because clearly the regular car is way too tame. Advertisement - Page continues below And lo, Ford's skipped the paint booth and replaced the sheet metal in the doors with bonded carbon fibre. The result is a car shod entirely in exposed carbon fibre. Indeed, 'the carbon weave of the hood, roof, rear deck and rear wing match up perfectly down the midline of the vehicle,' said Ford. Ford's also thrown in the optional 'Performance' pack as standard, which means to this body of exposed carbon fibre comes new dive planes, a bigger splitter, a DRS flap for the rear wing, underbody flaps, and a meeting betwixt the car's sound deadening and a really big bin. Inside, you'll find black leather and Dinamica microfibre suede on the door cards, centre console, dash and steering wheel. Plus some lime stitching. There's also a 'reflective centre gradient down the middle of the seats', because, well, at this point why the heck not. As a result of all this meticulous lightweighting, the Liquid Carbon shaves just under 6kg (around 13lbs) versus a GTD Carbon Series with the Performance Pack. Don't spoil it all by having a massive lunch. Advertisement - Page continues below In fact, just don't eat at all. Because the GTD comes with a very badass 5.2-litre supercharged V8 sending 804 American horses to the rear wheels. It's the fastest production Mustang. Heck, it's the fastest ever Ford. And it was briefly the fastest American car around the Nürburgring, before the wild Corvette ZR1X knocked it off its perch. 'When we were designing Mustang GTD Liquid Carbon, it was essential that these small details were present, because they speak to the care and attention required to both build a vehicle like Mustang GTD and to compete and win on the world's stage with Mustang GT3," said GTD design manager Anthony Colard. That's right, this car's been inspired by the Mustang GT3. Though as we said up top, we're not sure it's actually a car… Top Gear Newsletter Thank you for subscribing to our newsletter.
