Livvy Dunne Gives an Inside Look at that ‘Iconic' Split on the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Runway
Olivia 'Livvy' Dunne, a former LSU gymnast and non-stop social media sensation, performed a stunning split during her debut at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Runway Show in Miami back in May. Readers of Sportsnaut are familiar with it. Now, during an appearance on Stephanie McMahon's podcast, Dunne is opening up about what she describes as the 'iconic moment.' She told listeners of 'What's Your Story? With Stephanie McMahon' that she was nervous about performing the stunt but became increasingly convinced that she should pull the trigger based on the support she had received. 'I've never walked a runway a day in my life. I've only ever walked in my bedroom mirror after watching the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show growing up,' Dunne explained. 'I've literally never walked a runway.' Livvy Dunne's Iconic Split Livvy decided to do the split after consulting with her sister and SI editor MJ Day, who encouraged her to have fun and show her personality. 'I kinda think dropping into a split would be fun and show my athleticism. And I don't think I've ever seen anybody do it,' she said of her mindset heading into the event. Dunne, a 2025 SI Swimsuit cover model alongside Lauren Chan, Salma Hayek, and Jordan Chiles, described the experience as a fun moment in her post-gymnastics career. 'When watching a fashion show like Sports Illustrated, they wanna see personality, they wanna see movement, they wanna see you having the time of your life, because it really was in the moment. It was so fun,' she said. 'And yeah, I oiled myself up and dropped into a split … It was so much fun.' It was so much fun for the viewers as well, Liv. RELATED: An Amazing Moment Livvy Dunne, as she is wont to do, captivated the audience at the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Runway Show with her athleticism and charm. Everything she did, the audience devoured. Especially the 'oiling up and dropping the split' part. McMahon was also impressed, calling the moment 'amazing.' Despite performing the flawless split, things behind the scenes for the photoshoot itself were anything but perfect. The peppy gymnast revealed in a video about the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit shoot that she was dealing with a knee injury, which made some poses rather difficult. 'Fun fact, I was shooting on a fractured kneecap, so poses like this and the cover shot kind of hurt, but it was honestly so worth it,' she said in an Instagram clip. Livvy Dunne has been one of the most marketable stars in college sports history, thanks significantly to Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) payments. A New York Post report has described Livvy as a '$9.5 million NIL legend.' Blessed ‘SI' Swim star risks too-small bikini top in slow-mo pool exit
Penny Lane is hands-down one of the most well-endowed Sports Illustrated swimsuit models, and she wasn't afraid to show it in a recent social media share. In a stunning, slow-motion video posted to TikTok Monday, July 15, she brushes back her wet hair while still underwater before exiting the pool in a barely-there triangle bikini top that could have been a little bit bigger. She is also draped in beautiful rows of necklaces, her makeup somehow flawless even after being underwater. The British model, 30, didn't even caption the sexy share. 'Most beautiful woman in the world,' wrote a fan in the comments. Lane is one of the most decorated models on the Sports Illustrated circuit. In 2023, she won the iconic magazine's Swim Search competition, and the next year was crowned the coveted Rookie of the Year title. Livvy Dunne again calls out New York Times for story about her with infamous 'Sex Sells' headline
Former LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne is still not letting The New York Times off the hook for a controversial 2022 story on her that used a headline which included the phrase "Sex Sells." The November 2022 article, titled "New Endorsements for College Athletes Resurface an Old Concern: Sex Sells," described Dunne as "a petite blonde with a bright smile and a gymnast's toned physique." The article went on to argue that Name, Image and Likeness business in women's college sports "rewards traditional feminine desirability over athletic excellence." Dunne spoke out against the newspaper in an interview on the "What's Your Story?" podcast. She recalled the paper's staffers allegedly telling her to wear the outfit that they ended up putting the infamous headline over. "They came to our gymnastics facility at LSU, took pictures of me. They said, 'wear your team-issued attire, put on a leotard,'' and they took a picture of me standing in front of the beam, like any gymnast would, and then they blew it up on the screen and put the headline, 'Sex Sells,'" Dunne alleged on the podcast. "Okay, well, you just came into the facility and took pictures of me in our team-issued attire and blew it up on a screen… So I was like, 'okay, well, this is crazy.' And there was obviously a lot of backlash to the New York Times because of that." Dunne then recounted how she mocked The New York Times on social media for the design decision, and ended up getting a modeling offer from Sports Illustrated as a result. "I decided I was going to put that same picture that they posted and captioned 'sex sells' on my Instagram story and write 'at The New York Times, is this too much?' Because, come on, you know what you're doing. You just put a picture of me in a leotard for clicks and then caption it 'sex sells," Dunne said. "And then people loved that. They were like this is so great because no, it's not too much. You're in your team-issued attire, which is a leotard for gymnasts. There was a lot of positive feedback from that. So, Sports Illustrated reached out to my agent. I was so excited about that. That was always a dream of mine. There's some legends and some amazing athletes that have been in Sports Illustrated." Dunne has previously spoken out against the newspaper for the piece. During an appearance on the "Full Send Podcast" in summer 2023, she called the piece "BS," and claims the reporter asked her "weird" and "odd" questions. "It was complete BS. I mean, they called me on the phone in November and they told me that they were going to write about my accomplishments and stuff and I was like, 'OK, for sure. That's awesome. The New York Times. That's huge,'" she said. "The interviewer called me and he was asking me very odd questions. It was worded quite weird," she explained. "He was like, 'So, how does it feel to be a small petite blonde gymnast doing so well with NIL.' I was just like, 'Why does it matter that I'm petite and blonde.' You can just ask me about NIL without you having to use these weird ways of saying it." Dunne has been one of the most-followed athletes on social media since she joined LSU. She boasts more than 8 million followers on TikTok and another 5.4 million on Instagram. She helped the Tigers to a national championship in 2024, but her final year with LSU was derailed because of an injury. Since then, she's been spotted cheering on her boyfriend, Paul Skenes, as he makes waves in MLB with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Livvy Dunne opens up on feud with New York Times after 'sex sells' photoshoot
Livvy Dunne has lifted the lid on her bitter feud with the New York Times, almost three years after the outlet suggested she uses her sexuality to make money. Dunne, 22, was left furious in November 2022 when The Times published a profile on the then-LSU gymnast with the headline: 'New Endorsements for College Athletes Resurface an Old Concern: Sex Sells'. And years later, the social media sensation opened up on the fury that the article triggered in her, before admitting that the negative experience opened up new opportunities for her. Sitting down with WWE 's Steph McMahon on her 'What's Your Story?' podcast, Dunne revealed the role the article played in clinching her first-ever Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover. Speaking about her work with Sports Illustrated, Dunne said: 'It all started because of a hit piece [that] the New York Times wrote about me. 'They came to our gymnastics facility at LSU, took pictures of me. They said, "wear your team-issued attire, put on a leotard," and they took a picture of me standing in front of the beam like any gymnast would and then they blew it up on the screen and put the headline, "Sex Sells".' Dunne continued: 'Okay well, you just came into the facility and took pictures of me in our team-issued attire and blew it up on a screen. So I was like, well this is crazy. And there was obviously a lot of backlash to the New York Times because of that. 'I decided I was going to put that same picture that they posted and captioned "Sex Sells" on my Instagram story and write "@ The New York Times, is this too much?" Because, come on, you know what you're doing. You just put a picture of me in a leotard for clicks and then caption it "Sex Sells." 'And then people loved that. They were like this is so great because no, it's not too much. You're in your team-issued attire, which is a leotard for gymnasts." [...] There was a lot of positive feedback from that. 'So, Sports Illustrated reached out to my agent. I was so excited about that. That was always a dream of mine. There's some legends and some amazing athletes that have been in Sports Illustrated.' In May, Dunne, who called time on her athletics career last month, was named as one of four cover stars for SI Swimsuit's 2025 edition after appearing in two previous issues. Her first cover shoot with the magazine, which was carried out in Bermuda, showed Dunne her in tropical conditions while wearing a collection of skimpy bikinis. The main cover shot saw her kneeling in the water in a zebra-print bikini top and green bottoms while staring directly at the camera. Dunne confided to McMahon that she captured that particular shot while kneeling on a fractured kneecap - an injury that heartbreakingly cut her fifth and final season with LSU short. Despite soldiering through injury, Dunne gushed over the experience, insisting that shoot left her feeling confident. In her five years at LSU, Dunne became the most-followed and highest-paid female college athlete with over 13 million combined TikTok and Instagram followers and a NIL (name, image and likeness) valuation of $4.1million. However, in April her gymnastics career finally came to an end as she bid an emotional farewell to the Tigers.
