12 Celebrities Who Took Decades To Make It Big
We love a good rise to fame story, but the idea of an overnight success is kind of a every viral sensation or breakout role is usually a decade of side gigs, indie credits, and even straight-up rejection. Many celebrities have appeared out of nowhere, but in reality? They've been working their way up to the top for YEARS. Here are 12 stars and their journeys to becoming "overnight successes." She may be topping the charts with bangers like "Espresso" and "Please Please Please," but Sabrina Carpenter has been putting in the work for years. Starting out as a Disney star on Girl Meets World, Sabrina simultaneously acted and released music. She released five studio albums before the hugely successful "Short n' Sweet" became platinum in one month, and earned her a GRAMMY. Simu Liu may have become a household name from Shang-Chi and Barbie, but his climb to stardom began much earlier. Before Marvel came along, Simu worked as a stuntman, stock photo model, and actor in indie Canadian shows — including 5 seasons as Jung Kim on Kim's Convenience. He may be The Mandalorian and Joel in The Last of Us, but Pedro Pascal has been around for over two decades. Pedro spent the early 2000s appearing on basically every crime show known to man — NYPD Blue, Law & Order, and CSI to name a few. It wasn't until his role as Oberyn Martell in Game of Thrones that he was quickly on his way to superstardom. In 2019, Lizzo went viral for "Truth Hurts," but she had already been working in the music scene for a decade. "Truth Hurts" originally released in 2017, and only blew up two years later thanks to it's appearance on Netflix's Someone Great. When the song was confirmed eligible for awards that year, Lizzo celebrated online, acknowledging her hard work. Chappell Roan's meteoric rise in 2024 might've felt sudden, but she's been working towards it since 2015. After signing with Atlantic Records and launching her debut EP, she was dropped after releasing "Pink Pony Club" in 2020. She kept going and teamed up with producer Dan Nigro, eventually scoring a No. 2 album on the Billboard 200 with "The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess." After Normal People, Paul Mescal was EVERYWHERE. But, did you know that he did extensive stage work beforehand? He starred in productions like The Great Gatsby and The Plough and the Stars, before landing his breakout TV role on Normal People, which later opened the doors to Gladiator II and Aftersun! Speaking of theatre, Stephanie Hsu also took to the stage before hitting the big screen. She spent years performing on Broadway with Be More Chill and the The SpongeBob Musical before landing the part on Everything Everywhere All at Once. You may know him now as The Bear's Carmy, but Jeremy Allen White had a decade-long gig as Lip Gallagher in Shameless. He put in the work for years before receiving mainstream success, and has now won three consecutive Golden Globes for best actor in a television series. Before there was Lana Del Rey, there was Lizzy Grant. She began releasing music under that name in 2010, which wasn't well received. Still, she kept writing, recording, and developing her infamous aesthetic. It wasn't until she rebranded and released "Born to Die" where she exploded onto the music scene. Kesha's "TiK ToK" defined an era, but she was grinding behind the scenes long before that. She wrote for many artists and even sang uncredited background vocals on Flo Rida's "Right Round." After years of legal battles and setbacks, she's now an independent artist with new music and an upcoming tour! To many, Breaking Bad was Bryan Cranston's big break, but he had already spent decades in the industry beforehand. He starred on soap operas, did voiceover work, and appeared in smaller roles across numerous projects. It wasn't until his role as Hal in Malcolm in the Middle that he began to gain mainstream acclaim. After that, it was only a matter of time until Breaking Bad made him a legend. Bridesmaids might've made Melissa McCarthy a movie star, but she already had a developed comedy resume beforehand. She starred as Sookie on Gilmore Girls and appeared in a ton of early 2000s comedies before breaking through in Hollywood. Which celeb's career glow up surprised you the most? I need to catch up on some of their early work now...🎬🎵 Got another "overnight success" that actually took much longer? Let us know in the comments! Lizzo Credits This Type Of Massage For Helping With Her Body Transformation—And There's Real Science Behind It
Lizzo is many things—a singer, a songwriter, an actor, and, now, a cover star. When the entertainer, who's birth name is Melissa Viviane Jefferson, appeared in the Women's Health Summer 2025 issue, she appeared fit, healthy, and at peace. The last few years have been transformative for the 37-year-old, both inside and out. Lizzo is quick to point out that her body reinvention is not the result of Ozempic or weight loss surgery, but rather diet, exercise, and lifestyle changes. She loads up on protein-rich meals, works out five days per week, hosts spiritual relies on some help from a very special friend. The four-time Grammy winner has been outspoken on social media about the pivotal role celebrity lymphatic drainage specialist Flavia Lanini has played in her wellness journey. She's a regular at Lanini's eponymous Beauty Institute in Beverly Hills, indulging in her signature detox treatment once or twice weekly. The results speak for themselves, as seen in a recent before and after phot0 posted to Instagram. According to Lanini, it all comes to down to Lizzo's dedication and effort—and their ongoing relationship. 'I always tell my clients that they really need to trust in the process and trust me. If that happens, I can deliver results—and I'm so happy with Lizzo's results,' she says. 'We took a different approach to weight loss than she ever had before, using holistic treatments and targeting all-around health.' she says. Here, more on exactly what Lanini did to have Lizzo looking—and feeling—good as hell. The woman behind the woman. According to Lanini, Lizzo first came to see her about a year ago, with the goal of both losing weight and improving her overall health. 'We really wanted to take the natural approach because she hates needles and can't handle pain,' she says. That meant regular sauna sessions, drinking Lanini's detoxifying teas, several non-invasive muscle- and skin-tightening treatments, and a re-framing of her attitude toward food and nutrition. At the crux of their protocol? Lanini's signature detox treatment. 'This was really the best process for Lizzo because it helped boost her metabolism so much. We started doing it once or twice per week,' she explains. While Brazilian-born Lanini is a lymphatic drainage expert, and lymphatic drainage is involved, the treatment is far more than that. 'My technique is different because of my background and training. Being an esthetician in Brazil is nothing like being an esthetician here. I went to university for five years to earn my degree, and then spent 11 years working with doctors,' she explains. In fact, a similar protocol is even used on cancer patients in Brazil to help detox the body in between treatment rounds, she notes. The treatment includes: Ultrasound First up, an ultrasound treatment on the abdomen to help stimulate digestion. 'Think of your gut as an apple tree. The ultrasound works to shake it and remove the 'apples,' the build-up on the gut lining,' she explains. This not only helps get things moving, so to speak, but also boosts metabolism and can even help combat brain fog. When your body doesn't need to expend energy cleaning the gut, it can focus that energy elsewhere, Lanini claims. Massage Step two involves a head-to-toe rubdown. Rather than relying on traditional lymphatic drainage techniques (more on those in a moment), Lanini's method focuses on relaxing the fascia around the muscle to improve the muscle's functionality and movement, in turn stimulating the lymphatic system. The massage is paired with Lanini's proprietary topical sculpting cream featuring guarana, a caffeine-rich Brazilian plant. Post-massage, the cream is mixed with different salts and clay and applied underneath a wrap to boost additional detoxification. Sauna During a 20-minute sauna session, Lanini's clients sip on a detoxifying, lymph-supporting tea, which also boasts Brazilian ingredients including acai, guarana, and hibiscus, among others. 'It helps keep the body balanced, combats gut inflammation, and acts as electrolytes while you're in the sauna,' Lanini explains, who adds that Lizzo drinks the tea twice daily. When all is said and done, clients feel lighter, less bloated, sleep better, and have improved energy, she says. While this was Lizzo's standard regimen, Lanini upped the ante before a big event, like the Met Gala (or our cover shoot). 'When she wanted to be even more snatched we'd do the detox treatment three days in a row. You really do end up with a completely different body,' Lanini says. She adds that because Lizzo was also concerned with loose skin after losing so much weight, they also incorporated VelaShape, which tightens the skin using radiofrequency and other energy modalities. Bringing it all home. And for those of us who can't see Lanini regularly? Even the much more widely-available, traditional lymphatic drainage massages can help improve both health and aesthetic appearance. 'Think of the lymphatic system as your body's waste management system,' says Andy Wood, a masseuse specializing in lymphatic drainage massage at Chicago's Milk + Honey Spa. It helps to move and flush out a variety of toxins and debris, including excess fluid, cellular waste, viruses and more, he explains. Unlike blood, which is pumped by the heart, there's nothing actually pumping the lymphatic system. It moves when we move, or as a result of gravity, compression, or manual stimulation, adds Morgana Kemper, owner of La Brasiliera, a spa specializing in Brazilian lymphatic drainage massage with locations in Charlotte and Chicago. Lymphatic drainage massage is a way of manually boosting the lymphatic system and is ideal for combatting swelling and strengthening immunity, she says. As far as aesthetics go, it's important to point out that lymphatic drainage massage alone isn't going to actually cause any kind of real weight loss, Wood says. Rather, when paired with diet and exercise (as in Lizzo's case), it can help enhance the effects and appearance of that weight loss, he explains. Still, because it does flush out excess fluid, it can help make the body, particularly the abdomen, appear slimmer and more contoured, Kemper says. And while lymphatic drainage is generally very gentle (think subtle tapping and soft, sweeping motions), Brazilian techniques in particular can be a bit firmer and help redistribute fat cells for an even greater contouring effect, she adds. Regardless, both experts we spoke with say getting a lymphatic drainage massage monthly is ideal for those looking to make it a part of their wellness or weight loss routine. Can't get to the spa? Kemper is a big fan of trampoline rebounding: 'It can make the lymphatic system flow 15 times faster,' she says. Or, try dry brushing, another easy, at-home, lymph-boosting option. The picture-perfect proof. Ultimately, Lizzo is the best advertisement for an integrative, holistic approach as the gateway to healthy, long-lasting changes. 'Not only has she lost half of her body weight, she's also so much more conscious of her health now. And that's because we went from the inside-out,' says Lanini of her poster-child client. Lizzo echoed these sentiments when she spoke with WH. Yes, she's surpassed her goal weight, but she's also released the mental weight of feeling judged by others—and herself. 'It's not just about before-and-after photos. It's about consistency, discipline, and self-love. I'm beyond honored to be a part of your transformation and your healing process. You're not just inspiring others, you're leading the way,' Lanini captioned the recent Instagram post where she showcased Lizzo's results. We couldn't agree more. Lizzo Is Rested, Restored, and Ready to Rumble on ‘My Face Hurts From Smiling'
*** The last decade of Lizzo's career has been a microcosm of the modern American fame arc. The Houston-raised MC/singer/songwriter/flautist has gone from Prince-cosigned cult phenomenon to bona fide pop star to full-on backlash recipient and workplace-harassment-suit defendant, a process given extra intensity by the always-on news cycle and the constant hum of social-media chatter. While she's had her successes — she's accumulated chart-topping singles, Grammys and an Emmy, a shapewear line, and a nascent acting career — the highs and lows take a toll. More from Rolling Stone Lizzo on Her Surprise Rap Mixtape: 'I Feel Like a Brand-New Bitch' Sly Stone Believed Everybody Is a Star: The Massive Legacy of an Avant-Funk Revolutionary SZA Brings Out Lizzo for 'Special' Performance in Los Angeles As she told Rolling Stone, there was only one way for her to get out of her head: She had to get in the studio and work on music on her own terms. Over a two-week period, she took time out from making the follow-up to 2022's Special and busted out a hip-hop mixtape. While hip-pop cuts like the fizzy anthem 'Juice' and the summer-song kiss-off 'Truth Hurts' showed off Lizzo's dexterity with hooks and rhymes, My Face Hurts From Smiling is all about swagger, from the double-middle-finger salute Lizzo flaunts on its cover to its closing declaration, 'It's a Lizzo summer, bitch.' In May, Lizzo laid some verses atop the Atlanta rappers Pluto and YK Niece's viral hit 'Whim Whammiee,' a pumping cut with a playful braggadocio and a glittery Zaytoven-produced beat. Lizzo's additions promoted her clothing line ('Bitch, it's summer, we outside, put some Yitty on your titties,' she orders), shouted out Labubus and Kendrick Lamar's 'N95,' and flaunted her sexual prowess in unbridled fashion. Getting back in touch with her hip-hop roots — and receiving raves — inspired her to dig in deeper and craft a mixtape, a form that allowed her and her collaborators — including longtime producer Ricky Reed—more space to play. The raunchy, high-energy My Face Hurts From Smoling, which clocks in at just over half an hour, starts off with a bang — or, really, a 'Crashout': 'We outside, ho! We outside!' her friend and former groupmate Lexo taunts as Lizzo big-ups her ability to go 'through the bullshit, turn it to a boppin'.' That idea, where the only way out of a rough patch is through music, persists throughout the tape, with Lizzo sending fire in the direction of her naysayers and reveling in how unstoppable the idea of complete creative freedom makes her feel. 'Just 4 Fun' pairs schoolyard taunts and trap snares with Lizzo in high-speed mode, stealing a girl from a Call of Duty-glued mark and kicking another hapless game-player to the curb; 'Bend it Ova' is a giddy bedroom romp set to a sparse beat that's part roller-rink jam, part abstract vocal art. Doja Cat drops in for 'Still Can't Fuh,' which combines chopped-up gospel choirs with a withering assessment of a man who doesn't quite measure up, while SZA adds heat to 'IRL,' a call to touch grass—'I can't let no comment section ever fuck with my vibe,' Lizzo declares. Lizzo's return to her roots and willingness to get dirty might surprise some of the listeners who came to her in the wake of her 2019 breakthrough Cuz I Love You. But her overwhelming charisma was a large part of what helped propel her ascent of the charts all those years ago, and on the frothy, bawdy My Face Hurts From Smiling she sounds newly energized — and ready to rumble with all comers. Lizzo's Lawyers Call Stylist ‘Brazen Liar,' Seek Full Dismissal of Discrimination Suit
Lizzo's lawyers say the lawsuit filed by a wardrobe assistant over alleged discrimination and wrongful termination during the Grammy winner's 2023 European tour is 'meritless,' so all remaining allegations against Lizzo's touring company should be dismissed before a trial. In a scathing new filing, Lizzo's lawyers call plaintiff Asha Daniels a 'brazen liar' and 'disgruntled former employee with an inflated ego' who harbors 'personal vendettas' against Lizzo, her tour manager Carlina Gugliotta, and wardrobe manager Amanda Nomura. The lawyers claim Daniels sued with 'absurd allegations' because she was upset her assistant job did not 'grant her direct access to Lizzo' to pitch costume ideas and play with designs. More from Rolling Stone Writer and Activist Patrice Griffin Seeking Damages Against X Clan's Brother J in Child Sex Abuse Case Trump Sues Wall Street Journal, Rupert Murdoch Over Report on Epstein Birthday Letter See SZA and Lizzo Perform 'IRL' for the First Time in Paris 'Once [Daniels] joined the tour, it was immediately evident that she felt the role was beneath her,' the 34-page filing obtained by Rolling Stone reads. 'To add insult to injury, Daniels got no closer to Lizzo than occasionally smiling at her in passing.' In response to the new motion for summary judgment, Daniels' lead lawyer, Ronald Zambrano, says he's not worried. 'We fully expected the defense to file a motion to dismiss. We also fully expect the judge to deny the motion, and we look forward to taking this case to trial and winning,' Zambrano says in a statement. 'The motion is meritless, and the defense knows it, but their modus operandi is to treat all lawsuits as having no grounds to proceed by repeatedly blaming the victim. It won't work.' According to the new motion filed in federal court in Los Angeles, Daniels has not produced 'a single witness' to back up the complaints of a hostile work environment she started making involving Nomura during her first few days on the job. Lizzo's lawyers say Gugliotta took the complaints seriously from the start, investigated, found nothing illegal and instructed the two to get along. 'Daniels could and would not do so,' the paperwork filed Friday says. The new filing further seeks to discredit Daniels' claims she faced disability discrimination in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The lawyers say Daniels' allegations that she never received accommodations for an ankle injury, an allergic reaction, and two broken acrylic nails that caused her nail beds to bleed were baseless. The lawyers fault Daniels for wearing slide-on gym shoes or Crocs during her work hours, not asking for crutches, and failing to request a ladder for her bunk bed on the tour bus. 'She could not reasonably believe that a rolled ankle, broken acrylic nails or feeling 'woozy' are disabilities under the ADA,' the new filing reads. The lawyers say Daniels 'may not have liked the way Nomura allegedly behaved,' but 'none of the complained-of conduct that allegedly offended Daniels is actionable discrimination or retaliation under federal law.' With the new motion, Lizzo's lawyers are asking the judge to step in and rule that the superstar's touring company, Big Grrrl, has no liability based on the stated claims and evidence so far. Last December, the court granted a similar motion in Lizzo's favor, cutting her loose as an individual defendant, apart from her company. Daniels first filed her lawsuit in Sept. 2023, alleging the atmosphere on Lizzo's tour subjected her to 'racist and fat phobic comments,' sexual harassment, and disability discrimination. She claimed Nomura physically injured her by rolling a 'heavy clothing rack' over her foot. In a text exchange included in court documents, Daniels told Gugliotta that Nomura 'ran over' her foot with the rack and pushed her. She said she wanted Nomura to 'stop bullying' her. 'It's not lost on me that I'm one of the only black women working behind the scenes & I feel like she is treating me like I'm a slave and can't have a voice,' one message said. 'I'm going to talk to her today for you. We don't want anyone to feel like they are being bullied or not having a nice time,' Gugliotta responded. 'Also, you aren't the only black woman just so you know. We are very female heavy behind the scenes on this tour which is great and we do have another black lady in video/lighting.' Daniels filed her complaint in the wake of a similar sexual harassment and hostile workplace environment lawsuit filed by three of Lizzo's former dancers. Lizzo has denied the claims. In a March 2024 Instagram post, the 'Truth Hurts' singer said she was considering quitting the industry. 'I'm getting tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet. All I want is to make music and make people happy and help the world be a little better than how I found it,' she wrote. 'I'm constantly up against lies being told about me for clout & views.' In a ruling last year, a judge clipped some of the dancers' lawsuit but allowed the rest to proceed. Lizzo and her lawyers are appealing that ruling. Speaking to Keke Palmer on the actress' podcast last December, Lizzo addressed the legal claims head-on. 'I was literally living in my dream and then the tour ended and three ex-dancers just completely blindsided me with a lawsuit,' Lizzo said on the Baby This Is Keke Palmer podcast. 'The hardest part about all of this is that none of these things are true,' Lizzo said, calling the claims 'ridiculous' and 'very silly.' 'I could go through every single one. The sexual harassment one is really the one that upsets me the most,' she said.
