Insurer rejects mediclaim citing 'mismatch' over Google Timeline; consumer forum gives man relief

Valsad: A Gujarat resident was shocked when an insurance company rejected his mediclaim on the grounds that his Google Timeline did not match the location of the hospital that had treated him. The man from Silvassa had to knock on the door of the Consumer Dispute Redressal Forum in Valsad district, which ruled in his favour and directed the company to settle the claim with interest. In its order of July 14, made available recently, the president of the consumer forum, B G Dave, directed the firm to pay Rs 48,251 (mediclaim amount) with 8 per cent interest within 30 days of the order. Vallabh Matka, who had a mediclaim policy from Go Digit General Insurance Limited, was admitted to a private hospital in Silvassa in September 2024 for four days after he contracted viral pneumonia. After his discharge, Matka submitted medical bills to the insurance company for reimbursement. However, it rejected the claim, saying there were discrepancies over his Google Timeline. Google Timeline, earlier called Location History, creates a map of the places a person has been and the routes the individual has taken on each of their devices. Left with no option, Matka approached the consumer forum, a quasi-judicial body with the power to make decisions and resolve certain disputes like a court. After being issued a notice, the company told the forum that there were many inconsistencies concerning Matka's claim. "Upon internal verification of the claim, we noted that there are multiple discrepancies in submitted bills, indoor case papers and we have also noted discrepancies from insured statement to his verified Google Timeline," the company told the forum. As per the customer's statement, his phone was with him during hospitalisation, but as per Google Timeline, "the hospital location was not found in the patient's Google Map", it said. The forum, however, relied on the hospital's statement and other records. "In the report by the insurance company, it has said that the patient was admitted to the hospital and received treatment but it seems that they wanted to reject the claim and are giving false reason that the Google map timeline is not matching," the forum said, ordering the firm to settle the claim and pay 8 per cent interest. Glastonbury DJ reveals the surprise pop acts she's been told will perform

DJ Sarah Story has revealed her top tips for those attending the star-studded festival, and the big names that could take to the stage at Worthy Farm. This week marks another year of Glastonbury Festival, with the likes of The 1975 and Sir Rod Stewart set to perform. DJ Sarah Story, who has been attending since 2016, has shared some of the more glamorous moments of the iconic festival, which even led to a hilarious encounter with Location, Location, Location star Kirstie Allsopp. And as rumours continue to swirl over this year's surprise acts, fans could be treated to Lady Gaga or Gary Barlow, according to Sarah, who is set to DJ at the festival on Thursday and Friday. She revealed: 'Rumours sweep through the industry, and someone told me yesterday that Gary Barlow will perform. I just hope he does Take That material! 'I've also heard Lady Gaga is going to make an appearance. She would fit right in with Glastonbury. I bet she'd end up dancing in NYC Downlow.' After being a regular at Glastonbury since 2016, Sarah also shared her top tips for surviving the whole weekend, including what to avoid packing, before lifting the lid on the secret tunnels at the festival. 'If you have a production pass, you can cut through a lot of areas with these hidden tunnels and passageways,' she told Betway. 'It makes everything so much faster. There's not a lot of access to the South East corner, though, so one year it took me two hours on foot to make it from one DJ set to the next. It was so crowded, and you just had to push your way through.' And there's plenty of time for celeb-spotting while at the festival, with Sarah revealing exactly what the VIP area is like. 'There's an area called Moonbow, which is where a lot of celebs stay. Glastonbury is an event loads of celebrities want to attend, so you do see them mingling about in the crowd,' she explained. 'I remember one year seeing Kirstie Allsopp waltzing through the crowd with a crown on her head. I screamed, 'I love you!' and she laughed. That's Glastonbury for you!' More Trending 'A lot of the celebrity campsites are very glam. I've stayed in one that had hairdressers on site, makeup artists and even a massage spa. My friend had acupuncture done.' As for Sarah's best tips for a first-time festival attendee, she explained how important preparation is when heading to Glastonbury. 'You just cannot wrap your head around the size of the staff. There are so many people that work at Glastonbury and teams behind everything. There are hundreds of people on the ground and tons of lorries that pass through the backstage area. 'It takes a lot of prep and obviously they've been throwing this festival for a while now, so they're all pros.' Got a story? Phil Spencer urges house hunters to do the '10p test' before buying

It's important to look out for cracks in the walls when viewing a potential new home – but just knowing that they're there isn't enough. As property expert and Location, Location, Location presenter Phil Spencer exclusively tells Metro, you should be testing those cracks with the 10p test. In Phil's opinion, not all gaps in the walls or ceilings are created equal, and while they can sometimes be harmless, they could also be symptomatic of something much more concerning. 'Often, they may just be a cosmetic issue, but they can also be a warning sign of a serious problem called subsidence [when the ground starts to sink, impacting the foundations of the property],' Phil explains. This is where Phil's 10p test comes in. While it has nothing to do with the value of the home, you will at least need to remember your wallet for the house viewing. 'If the crack is less than 3mm wide — which means you can't fit a 10 pence piece into it – it may not be serious,' Phil says. You can access completely fee-free mortgage advice with London & Country (L&C) Mortgages, a partner of Metro. Customers benefit from: – Award winning service from the UK's leading mortgage broker – Expert advisors on hand 7 days a week – Access to 1000s of mortgage deals from across the market Unlike many mortgage brokers, L&C won't charge you a fee for their advice. Find out how much you could borrow online Mortgage service provided by London & Country Mortgages (L&C), which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (registered number: 143002). The FCA does not regulate most Buy to Let mortgages. Your home or property may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage. 'Plaster sets hard and can crack over time as the property shrinks or swells in different weather conditions. 'The key thing is to not jump to conclusions, and the '10p test' is a useful rule of thumb.' Phil adds that cracks can actually happen more frequently in new-build homes. 'During the first year after it's built, a property will gently 'settle' and the plaster will contract as it dries out. These tiny movements lead to cracks forming in the plaster, which are nothing to worry about and can be filled and repainted.' The cost of repairing cracks in the ceiling can vary between £1,400 and £1,700, according to statistics from Checkatrade. But if it turns out to be a subsidence issue, you could end up parting with £12,500 on average to cover the cost. Ouch. Likewise, cracks measuring more than 3mm wide should be a red flag, as well as diagonal ones, and those which are wider at the top than the bottom. Wondering where to start? Find a surveyor and arrange an inspection of the property. They'll then be able to identify whether the building has subsidence and advise on what to do next. Phil also warns to watch out for cracks that are noticeable not only from the inside of the home, but the outside, too. 'Cracks caused by subsidence tend to appear at 'weak points' in the home – typically around windows and doorframes, or where an extension has been added. If you notice cracks in these areas, keep a close eye on them and take action if they get bigger,' Phil notes. More Trending 'Subsidence can be caused by lots of things and isn't a problem limited to older properties. If you think your home might be affected, don't panic, but act fast. The sooner it's investigated and fixed, the less damage will be done to the property.' It's time to get rid of those excessive trinkets – even including photographs and various personal items that, as Phil says, make the home look 'cluttered.' 'When potential buyers view your home, they want to imagine themselves living there, and it's hard to do that if the property looks a little too lived in,' he previously told Metro. View More » 'That's not to say you need to depersonalise, but removing clutter and making everywhere tidy will get every viewing off to the best possible start.' Do you have a story to share?
