Teachers welcome govt bid to form commission for univs
Ranchi: The state cabinet has on Thursday passed a resolution related to Jharkhand State University Bill 2025, which fulfils the long-pending demands of university teachers for setting up a Jharkhand State University Service Commission (JSUC). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The Jharkhand University Teachers Association (JUTAN) said it is yet to go through the details, but welcomed the move. According to the bill, JSUC shall consist of a chairperson, member (administration) and three other members having terms of five, four and three years respectively. The JSUC would be responsible for recruitment and promotion of all teachers and non-teaching staff, officers, registrar, controller of examination, finance officer and principal of colleges but excluding vice-chancellor (VC), pro-VC and financial advisor. It said that VC, pro-VC and the financial advisor of the state would be appointed by the state govt. The commission would also have power to conduct Jharkhand Eligibility Test for subjects as may be decided by the state govt. It may be stated here that according to the bill, there would be two types of universities in the state, including affiliating universities which would be teaching intensive with powers to grant affiliation while the others would be unitary university which would be research intensive. The bill aims to introduce key reforms, including uniform governance model, digital transformation, industry- academia collaboration and transparency and accountability in higher education sector. Reacting to the decision, JUTAN convener Kanjiv Lochan said, "We hope that JSUC would ensure timely promotion of university teachers in the state. Lochan added, "I am yet to go through the nuances of the bill. The promotion of 700 assistant professors who joined in 2008 is pending before the Jharkhand Public Service Commission for three years. Hope a decision on the issue is taken soon." Notably, JUTAN is staging agitation over the delay in promotion of university teachers. On Thursday it staged a protest at Tribal and Regional languages section of Ranchi University.
