DAP to sponsor giant Jalur Gemilang for Penang shop in flag row

The 59-year-old hardware store owner was arrested last week after he was filmed holding the flag upside down in a video which went viral. PETALING JAYA : DAP today said that it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang to be displayed at a shop in Penang that recently came under fire for allegedly hoisting the national flag upside down. DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said the flag would be installed this evening so that the public could see that it had been put up correctly. In a statement, he also said that Penang DAP members would distribute 831 Jalur Gemilang flags for free as a show of unity during the Merdeka Day celebration, should anyone attempt to disrupt the peace at the shop's premises. 'This is an act of outright bullying that is completely unacceptable. Bullying must be opposed not only in schools but also when it targets senior citizens,' he said, criticising certain quarters for threatening to stage a protest at the shop if charges were not filed. 'However, in dealing with such immature behaviour, we must demonstrate greater rationality and adopt peaceful, respectful approaches.' Loke also slammed the same group of people for pressuring the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) to prosecute the shop owner, calling it 'an act of interference and an attempt to influence prosecutorial decisions without due consideration'. 'The AGC must be given the freedom to make decisions without political pressure,' he said. Although he did not name anyone, Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh yesterday warned that he would hold a protest at the shop if the owner was not charged by Thursday. He also said that he would 'teach this 'Ah Pek' how to correctly put up a flag' himself. The 59-year-old hardware store owner was arrested last week after he was filmed holding the flag upside down in a video which went viral. He said it happened while he was measuring an iron pole and that he corrected the mistake immediately, but was still arrested before being released on bail. Acting Penang police chief Alwi Zainal Abidin said the investigation paper would be referred to the deputy public prosecutor for further action. Penang DAP chief Steven Sim also pledged that the state chapter would be on the ground to protect peace and harmony. 'The issue of the upside-down flag in Kepala Batas has been handed over entirely to the police to investigate and manage according to the law. There is no space for any third party to exploit or inflame the situation,' he said in a statement. 'If anyone comes to threaten or harass Penang residents over this matter, Penang DAP will stand with the people and greet the provocateurs by handing out the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of unity and love for the country.'

'To deal with such immature parties, we must show higher rationality and act in a peaceful and courteous manner,' he added. The incident began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was found hanging upside-down outside his premises. DAP slams alleged pressure on AGC to charge Penang shopkeeper over flag blunder

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 — DAP today criticised alleged attempts to pressure the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) into prosecuting a Penang shopkeeper who mistakenly displayed the Jalur Gemilang incorrectly outside his premises. In a statement, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said such actions amounted to interference in prosecutorial decisions and called for the AGC to be allowed to operate independently without political influence. 'Threats by certain parties to stage a protest in front of the shop if no charges are brought are blatant bullying and unacceptable, particularly as the shopkeeper is a senior citizen,' he said. 'To deal with such immature parties, we must show higher rationality and act in a peaceful and courteous manner,' he added. DAP said it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang to be installed at the shop this evening to demonstrate that the flag is now correctly displayed. The party added that if any group attempted to disturb the peace at the premises, its Penang members would respond by distributing 831 Jalur Gemilang flags for free as a gesture of unity ahead of National Day on August 31. The incident began when a 59-year-old hardware shop owner in Kepala Batas, Penang, was investigated after the Jalur Gemilang was found hanging upside-down outside his premises. KTMB reaffirms commitment to Johor on ETS expansion

KTMB said it is working with the relevant contractors and authorities to ensure its ETS service from Segamat to Kluang will be ready as soon as possible, with trial runs currently under way. PETALING JAYA : Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) is committed to fully expanding its Electric Train Service (ETS) to Johor as soon as possible. However, the company said it will only be done in phases, after ensuring the safety and reliability of the service to the southern sector, Bernama reported. 'KTMB's primary responsibility is to ensure safety, reliability and readiness before opening any new segment to the public,' it said in a statement today. KTMB said it is working with the relevant contractors and authorities to ensure the next segment of its service, from Segamat to Kluang, will be ready as soon as possible, with trial runs currently under way. The three phases for the ETS extension in Johor are to Segamat, Kluang, and JB Sentral in Johor Bahru. The service currently runs from Padang Besar in Perlis to Segamat. 'The transport minister (Loke Siew Fook) had announced last March, when launching the service to Segamat, that the extension in the southern sector will be done in phases, depending on several critical technical milestones and regulatory approvals,' KTMB said. The company said it wanted to reassure the public of its commitment to delivering a safe, modern and transformative rail service for the southern corridor, following recent reports on the service being extended to Johor Bahru. KTMB said the ETS service to Segamat has been operating successfully since March this year, offering improved travel options and stimulating local economic activity. 'KTMB wishes to thank all passengers, local stakeholders and the public for their patience and continued support. We remain fully committed to making ETS travel to the south a success,' it said.
