Eilis O'Hanlon: ‘Two decades on, Roy Keane's exit from Saipan remains as gripping as ever'
Television reviews Watching Dallas or Dynasty back in the day was to get a glimpse into a bigger, brighter world of skyscrapers, wide open spaces, the Oil Barons' Ball. Depictions of the United States on screen these days are considerably less appealing. Long Bright River (Channel 4, Sunday, 10pm) is set in the homeless tent cities of Philadelphia, and stars Amanda Seyfried – you know, the one from Mamma Mia! – getting as far away from type as it's possible to imagine by playing Mickey Fitzpatrick, a young single mom and patrol cop who begins to suspect the women being found dead in the neighbourhood did not die of drug overdoses as thought but were murdered by a serial killer.

You can binge all eight episodes of TV thriller that left fans 'wrecked'
Channel 4 today released all episodes of a gritty new crime drama starring Amanda Seyfried. Based on a New York Times bestseller by Liz Moore, Long Bright River is a suspenseful eight-part thriller starring the Mamma Mia! star alongside Top Boy's Nicholas Pinnock and The Wire's John Doman. The show sees Seyfried play Mickey, a police officer on the beat in Philadelphia, facing a city ravaged by the opioid crisis. After a string of murders, Mickey begins to piece together how her personal history is linked to the case. Head of Acquisitions at Channel 4 Polly Scates said they were 'immediately hooked' by the thriller, as well as Amanda Seyfried's 'scene-stealing performance'. The show has already been available in the US on Peacock, with viewers taking to social media to share their thoughts – and one fan even labelling it a 'masterpiece'. Taking to X to share their reaction to the show, @debrapalermo wrote: 'I was enthralled for all 8 episodes. It's a slow burn with lots of twists and turns. Amanda Seyfried is once again stunning and sublime. 'But the superstar of Long Bright River is Callum Vinson. Little dude deserves an Emmy. I adored him in Chucky but I worshipped him in this!' @shboogies chimed in, adding: 'I spent my entire day binging Long Bright River and omg. A masterpiece.' @effoff1988 compared the show to Mare of Easttown, writing: 'Long Bright River may not be as polished and impeccably paced as its closest comp, Mare of Easttown, but it is still a compelling, well-made miniseries with a stellar star turn from Amanda Seyfried, who deserves serious Emmy consideration. They added: 'The finale wrecked me.' 'Two episodes into Long Bright River and my blood is already boiling (in a good way). Amanda Seyfried can do no wrong and this needs to be talked about more,' tweeted @mkingsle. More Trending However, not everyone could get behind the new show, with @InDarkWeRisePod writing: 'Wanted to like this, but alas, it's not to be. A dreadfully slow story about a Philadelphia police officer searching for her drug addicted sister who has gone missing. 'Amanda Seyfried isn't terrible, but the writing is horrendously bad. Slow, filler, dull. 2/10.' Oof – we'll let you be the judge. View More » Long Bright River is available to stream on Channel 4. Got a story? John Oliver Mocks Trump Over Comments About Girls and What Ages They Play With Dolls
John Oliver again mocked President Trump and his 'stupid trade' war on Last Week Tonight, this time taking aim at comments Trump made about the prices of dolls going up due to tariffs. Last week the president explained the effects of the tariffs by using the price of dolls going up as an example: 'Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, you know? And maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally.' More from The Hollywood Reporter 'The Last of Us' Creator on Bella Ramsey's Intense "Baby Shark" Scene How 'Long Bright River' Star Amanda Seyfried and Showrunner Nikki Toscano Recast the True Crime Formula 'Lopez vs. Lopez' and 'Night Court' Canceled After Three Seasons Apiece at NBC Said Oliver: 'What a very weird thing to say. It's just another snapshot in the chaos album that is Trump having anything to do with children, because you can now put 'kids will have two dolls instead of 30' right up there with the lawnboy scream and that time he asked a kid if she believed in Santa Claus because, quote, 'At 7, it's marginal, right?'' The HBO show's host then noted that Trump reiterated his comments a few days later, saying: 'I don't think a beautiful baby girl that's 11 years old needs to have 30 dolls. I think they can have three dolls, or four dolls.' Oliver's take: 'OK, there is so much there. 'A beautiful baby girl that's 11 years old'? Don't call an 11-year-old that. First, it's creepy, and second, I promise, you call an 11-year-old girl a baby, she'll fucking kill you.' He continued: 'To think the prime age for playing with dolls is 11 is almost impressively wrong. Everyone knows the breakdown of what people play with by age goes: blocks from ages 1 to three, dolls from ages 3 to 7 and our phones from ages 8 until we die.' But Trump didn't stop there. He continued to explain himself during remarks made later on Air Force One. 'All I'm saying is that…that a young lady, a 10-year-old girl, a 9-year-old girl, a 15-year-old girl, doesn't need 37 dolls. She could be very happy with two or three four or five,' Trump said. Opined Oliver: 'Every single way this man refers to girls makes my skin want to turn inside out. That said, I did also want to see him keep going there, just to see how many variations of ages and numbers he could cycle through: 'All I'm saying is a young lady, 10-year-old girl, 9-year-old girl, 15-year-old girl, 45-year-old girl that's still young at heart, doesn't need 37 dolls. She could be very happy with two or three or four or six or eight, but also nine, and in its own way, 10 — 10 dolls, she could be happy with, couldn't she? Or maybe 11. We can't rule out 11 dolls, or 12 — 12's a good number, isn't it, folks? Twelve apostles, 12 days of Christmas, 12 Angry Men — Henry Fonda, great guy, right? The other men, very angry, very angry men. That's what we've got to get out of this country that's coming over illegally. Or, you know what? 13 dolls, that's my final offer.'' Oliver went on to jokingly question whether Trump had ever come into contact with a 15-year-old girl, given that most girls have given up dolls by then: 'Has he ever met a 15-year-old girl? That's a dumb question. Of course he has. He was friends with Jeffrey Epstein.' Oliver also quipped that sticks are about to 'make a comeback' as a popular toy given the tariffs: 'Throw it, catch it, set it on fire. Just look at it. The stick's the only toy you'll ever need, which is lucky 'cause it's also the only one you'll ever have.' 'Compelling' US drama with finale that 'wrecked' viewers now available to stream
The popular US drama is now available to stream for free in the UK and fans are already obsessed. Channel 4 has subtly released an adaptation of Liz Moore's top-selling crime thriller, Long Bright River. Viewers are already loving the drama-filled show, which is fully available on the channel's streaming platform and is scheduled to broadcast in late May. Actress Amanda Seyfried, who is best known for her roles in Mean Girls, Veronica Mars, Dear John and Mamma Mia! movies, is taking the lead role in the series. The eight-part miniseries will see Amanda's character Mickey Fitzpatrick, a complex police officer torn between her job and her troubled family life, particularly her sister Kacey's addiction struggles. When a string of murders rocks Philadelphia, Mickey becomes fixated on uncovering the truth, especially as the killer seems to be targeting people like her sister. The show, released on Peacock in the UK earlier this year, has already generated social media buzz among fans and they have wasted no time sharing their reaction. One viewer commented: "#LongBrightRiver may not be as polished and impeccably paced as its closest comp, Mare of Easttown. "But it is still a compelling, well-made miniseries with a stellar star turn from Amanda Seyfried who deserves serious Emmy consideration. The finale wrecked me." Another fan praised: "'#LongBrightRiver is fantastic so far (3 episodes in) and obvs Amanda Seyfried is great in it but the child actor Callum Vinson who plays her son Thomas might need to get some major recognition come next awards season!" A third person raved: "I'm on episode 4 and i just wanna say u all have to watch this. It is SO GOOD and our girl is AMAZINGGG #LongBrightRiver." Discussing her personal connection to the show, Amanda revealed to Variety: "The characters in this story are struggling with the opioid crisis, and maybe I connect in a deeper way to this character's journey because of my relationship to a lot of the subject matter. 'What I didn't expect is to feel like this experience grounded me as well. It lit a fire within me. " She further added: "I wasn't looking for something grounded and heavy and dark, but it was therapeutic in a way. "The storytelling, the perspective was so unique, and it knew exactly what it was. It felt like if this knows exactly what it is, then maybe I will find something new within my own journey." Polly Scates, who is Head of Acquisitions at Channel 4 added: 'We were immediately hooked by this propulsive thriller and Amanda Seyfried's scene stealing performance as Mickey. "We're thrilled that Channel 4 will be the home of Long Bright River in the UK and to bring this compelling series to our viewers across both streaming and linear.'
