The secret to a (very) long life: 'Never argue', says 115-year-old British woman
An undated picture of Caterham, who is now the world's oldest woman, according to LongeviQuest. — Hallmark Care Homes/AP For Ethel Caterham, the trick to a long life – and in her case, it really has been – is not to argue. Caterham, who is 115, became the world's oldest living person, according to the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), after Sister Inah Canabarro, a Brazilian nun and teacher, died on April 30 at the tender age of 116. 'Never arguing with anyone ... I listen and I do what I like,' Caterham said from her nursing home in Surrey, southwest of London, on the secret to her longevity. She was born on Aug 21, 1909, in the village of Shipton Bellinger in the south of England, five years before the outbreak of World War I. She was the second youngest of eight siblings. Travel has been in her blood, it's clear. In 1927, at the age of 18, Ethel embarked on a journey to India, working as a nanny for a British family. She stayed there for three years before returning to England, according to the GRG. She met her husband Norman, who was a major in the British army, at a dinner party in 1931, and they were stationed in Hong Kong and Gibraltar, the GRG said. They had two daughters whom they raised in Britain. Norman died in 1976. Hallmark Lakeview Luxury Care Home in Camberley, where Caterham is a resident, posted pictures of her cutting a cake and wearing a '115' tiara in a Facebook post recently. 'Huge congratulations to Lakeview resident, Ethel on becoming the oldest person in the world! What an incredible milestone and a true testament to a life well-lived,' it said in an accompanying statement. 'Your strength, spirit, and wisdom are an inspiration to us all. Here's to celebrating your remarkable journey!' The title of the oldest person ever is held by French woman Jeanne Calment, who lived to 122 years 164 days, according to the Guinness World Records. – AP

Born on June 8, 1908, the Teresian nun was the oldest person in the world, according to LongeviQuest, a group of researchers that studies centenarians. She lived in Porto Alegre, in the Santo Enrique de Ossó Shelter, located next to the provincial house of the Teresian Sisters of Brazil, a community she joined in 1927 at age 19. In a March 2024 interview with ACI Digital, CNA's Portuguese-language news partner, she mentioned that one of the secrets to her longevity was praying every day for all the people of the world. Originally from São Francisco de Assis in Rio Grande do Sul state, Inah was the great-niece of Gen. David Canabarro, one of the main leaders of the Farroupilha Revolution (1835–1845) that took place in the same state. She studied at a convent school and at age 19 entered the novitiate with the Teresian Sisters in Montevideo, Uruguay. Over the course of more than a century, she experienced numerous changes in the world and in the Church. The nun lived through two world wars and 10 popes. The year she was born, St Pius X was pope. As a teaching sister, Inah taught Portuguese, mathematics, science, history, art, and religion in Teresian schools in Rio de Janeiro, Itaqui, and Santana do Livramento, a city where she is much loved because it was where she spent most of her life. A notable achievement in her life was the creation of the Santa Teresa School marching band in Santana do Livramento. The band featured 115 musical instruments and performed in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. She also collaborated in the creation of the renowned Pomoli High School marching band in Rivera, Uruguay, sister city of Santana do Livramento. With her death, the world's oldest person, according to LongeviQuest, becomes Englishwoman Ethel Caterham, who is 115 years old, born on Aug 21, 1909. --CNA

Elizabeth Francis witnessed it all, as she lived a full, healthy, and long life. Francis, the third-oldest person in the world, who celebrated her 115th birthday in July last year, passed away in October 2024. As old as history goes: Francis officially became the oldest living American after Edie Ceccarelli died at the age of 116 in February last year. She was awarded a plaque as well by LongeviQuest, an organization that tracks and compiles information about the world's oldest people. Ben Meyers, CEO of LongeviQuest, referred to her as "America's grandmother," highlighting her resilience throughout her extensive life experiences. Although Francis passed away a few months after she rang in her 115th birthday last year, her life hack for longevity still remains relevant. Take a look. The secret behind a long life: Born in 1909 in St. Mary Parish, Louisiana, Francis raised her now-95-year-old daughter as a single mother and operated a coffee shop in Houston. Harrison detailed that her faith was one of the factors that helped her be up and about despite her old age. So did her diet and lifestyle. Francis maintained a routine of walking and refrained from smoking or consuming alcohol. She consistently focused on her health, continuing her walking habits into her 90s and avoiding cigarettes and alcohol, as shared by her granddaughter, Ethel Harrison, in an interview with Today. She prepared meals using vegetables from her own garden, including collard greens, mustard greens, carrots, and okra. Harrison mentioned to ABC13 that she never witnessed her grandmother eat fast food. "Whenever you visited her home, regardless of the day, she would be cooking. I really believe that played a significant role in her longevity," she remarked about her grandmother's lifestyle. Nutritionists often advise people to base their diets on whole foods, with one study indicating that consuming more plant-based and less processed foods could potentially extend a person's life by a decade. Francis also dedicated significant time to her family; Harrison would frequently visit her mother and grandmother at their home, and she told Today that they were consistently engaged in activities together as a family unit. Research indicates that having solid relationships and social interactions can contribute to a longer, healthier life. Francis also diligently worked to support her family as a single mother and remained active even after retirement. "She was an incredibly hard worker. That's the most vivid memory I have of her. Even post-retirement, she continued working. Though she did domestic tasks, she was always engaged in work," Harrison reflected. Tips and tricks for longevity: To summarize, Elizabeth Francis' longevity tips revolve around mental and emotional well-being, a strong faith, a positive outlook, and enjoying life to the fullest, while also emphasizing the importance of hard work and strong social connections.
