Ruth Langsford's savvy 'upside-down' salad trick explained

Loose Women star Ruth Langsford shared her 'upside-down salad' recipe with fans last year Ruth Langsford has taken to Instagram to share her ingenious 'upside-down salad' technique with followers. The 65-year-old Loose Women presenter divulged how her knack for stacking ingredients not only prolongs the salad's crispness but also prevents a dreary, soggy texture. In an Instagram post from September, Ruth provided a simple guide for putting together this creative salad with nine key ingredients. "So, now I'm going to make what I call my 'upside-down salad'," she said at the time, according to SurreyLive. ‌ "So, basically, I put everything in layers in one of these [glass tubs], which means that when I tip it out, the lettuce is on the bottom and everything else that I want is in layers. Anyway, you get the gist. ‌ "So, basically I put kitchen roll in the bottom [of the tub] because then any kind of juices from the tomatoes and cucumber soak a bit into that, so the whole salad doesn't get soggy. So, that's the gist, and let me show you how I do it." Kicking off her salad assembly, Ruth commenced by chopping a variety of little tomatoes along with onions, unperturbed by the tomatoes' minor squishiness as she combined them. She continued: "Tuna on top of that. ‌ "I like tuna in olive oil, maybe a bit more calorific, but I don't care because I love the taste. One hard-boiled egg, you can put them the other way around, so that when you tip it up the yolks' pointing up at you. It doesn't really matter. "Then some avocado, this is a bit brown, because I actually chopped it last night to use for something else and forgot it. It's been in the fridge, it's a bit brown, but it's fine because it will be covered in salad dressing. "Black olives, if you like them, I love them. There's the cucumber - I scraped the seeds out because they are very wet and watery and will make that [salad] go soggy. Cucumber in, and then all I've got to do now is put the lettuce on." ‌ Ruth presented her packed lunch to the viewers, displaying the colourful layers of her homemade salad creation. To complete the ensemble, she lavishly poured her treasured Brianna's Honey Mustard Dressing, a delightful extra flavour. "There you go! That's tomorrow's upside-down salad," she concluded, while adding in the video caption: "I take this to work most days….stops me grabbing unhealthy, processed food. ‌ "Even when you make a healthy choice and buy a salad, in my experience, they're mostly leaves!! This way you get a good, decent portion salad and you get to put all the things you like in it!" In addition to its delicious taste, Ruth's layered salad contains an impressive collection of 'superfoods', which are often defined as nutrient-rich foods considered beneficial for health and well-being. For instance, a 2024 study from the University of Bristol revealed that men who ate over 10 portions of tomatoes a week saw an 18% decrease in their risk of developing prostate cancer. Nutritionist Helen Bell from Help & Advice acknowledged this during a conversation with the Mirror, noting that cooking tomatoes could enhance their protective effects. ‌ "There is evidence suggesting that tomatoes might lower prostate cancer risk, largely due to lycopene," she said. "This antioxidant is thought to reduce inflammation and prevent cancer cell growth. When I've looked into it, cooking tomatoes seems to increase lycopene availability, so enjoying them in sauces or soups might be particularly beneficial." Moreover, health experts frequently praise avocados for their abundant omega-3 content, crucial fats for brain and heart well-being. Experts at the US-based University of Rochester Medical Centre previously explain ed: "Omega-3s are a helpful and important form of fat. Your body needs it but can't make it. Your body needs 2 forms of omega fatty acids. "These are omega-3 and omega-6. Omega-3 is the most important. Experts believe that omega-3s help prevent coronary heart disease (CHD) in healthy people. They also believe omega-3s can slow progress of the disease in those who already have it." GK Barry lands biggest career move to date as she takes on huge new role

After building a loyal following online and appearing on I'm A Celebrity, GK Barry is expanding her media presence with a major national radio debut on BBC Radio 1 Grace Keeling, better known as GK Barry, is stepping into a new role this summer—hosting her very own weekend show on BBC Radio 1 throughout July. Known for her rise from TikTok fame and I'm A Celebrity appearances, the 25-year-old influencer will be on air every Saturday and Sunday from 1–4pm starting July 4. 'This is completely different from podcasting,' she told MailOnline. 'I'm really excited to be presenting my own show with BBC Radio 1 this summer… I'm always listening to the radio when I travel, so I can't wait to interact with the listeners and get them involved in all the fun.' ‌ The BBC has teased that GK will be joined by 'special guests' throughout her run, offering fans a new side to the digital star. Meanwhile, fellow celebrity Jamie Laing is also returning to the airwaves - this time alongside his wife, Sophie Habboo, who'll co-host while his usual presenters are on maternity leave. ‌ Away from her growing media career, GK has spoken candidly about her childhood in the British Virgin Islands and her difficult transition back to the UK. Born Grace Keeling, she spent her early years in Tortola with her mother Loretta and stepfather Andrew, whom she considers her dad. 'From as young as I can remember, I was in Tortola and I was one of the only white girls,' she shared on the Loose Women podcast. 'All the aunties were doing my hair… little cornrows… I never saw anything different about that.' ‌ She described her school life there as racially diverse and inclusive. 'There were so many different races... I was friends with everyone. I had an incredible time.' But the move to Cambridge at age eight was a harsh contrast. 'We moved back to a predominantly white, small town, and I had a Caribbean accent,' she said. 'Now Jane, I don't know if you've ever gone into a small town with a Caribbean accent and be white, but it's vicious.' ‌ Struggling to connect with her peers, she recalled, 'Most people couldn't wrap their head around [it at school]... I'm talking about my life and people had no clue what I was on about.' She also remembered the racism her stepfather endured. 'My dad was getting a lot of hate at the time… so it was sort of just like, 'I don't really know where we all stand here'.' Host Jane Moore clarified, 'This is your stepdad, but he's your dad,' to which GK agreed.

Loose Women star has 'so many concerns' over kids on social media

Despite being one of the original YouTube stars, Louise Pentland has revealed that she is worried about kids life online in the modern social media world One of the 'original YouTubers' turned Loose Women star shared she now has has "so many concerns" about children being on social media. Louise Pentland, 40, amassed millions of followers online and shot to fame in the early days of the video-sharing website, but now a mum, she insists she has to be strict about the kind of content her children consume and share online. ‌ The social media star first launched her channel in January 2010 and has been watched more than 195 million times on the platform, amassing a staggering 2.17 million followers. ‌ She was one of the original stars of the platform, making a name for herself alongside the likes of Joe Sugg, Caspar Lee, Jim Chapman, Marcus Butler, Zoella and more - known as the Brit Crew. But now speaking on Loose Women, she voiced her worries about life online, she said: "I have so many concerns about children online. I try to find a really healthy balance, and some people would say I could share more, some people could say I could share less. ‌ "I don't do daily vlogging, or weekly vlogging or anything like that. I know my children. Darcy is a little showperson, she loves theatre and dance. Pearl, not so much. "Darcy has a TikTok, which is a private account; she has an Instagram, which is a public account, but she's not allowed to just post whenever she likes. It has to be well thought-out, and I have to check it out. "There's so many safety features if you know about them. I don't think they're obvious enough but I'm logged in to her things so I see everything that is coming in and everything going out. As much as you trust your child, you can't trust the world. ‌ "We're never gonna get rid of social media, it's here for good, so I would rather train her to use it wisely and sensibly while she still listens to me!" Despite the potential concerns she raised, she also shared how the website helped her through some "really dark times", keeping her motivated while having the support of her community around her. But again, she insists that having clear online "boundaries" is important when she decides what part of her life she shares on camera. ‌ She said: "There have been some really dark times in my life. I had a very difficult, turbulent childhood, and I have been divorced. During those times, not the childhood, but, say, when my marriage came to an end, YouTube was a really joyful distraction. "I do share the down bits, but also I think it's really important that we remember to have boundaries, and you don't need to share every single thing with every single person. "So I try and find a balance of not making everything look perfect and remembering what is personal. When you're dealing with your children and your family, you've got to have those boundaries."

This Morning's Alison Hammond leaves co-host Paddy McGuinness in hysterics as she suffers huge make-up blunder live on air

This Morning's Alison Hammond left her co-host Paddy McGuinness in hysterics with a huge make-up blunder live on air during Friday's instalment of the ITV show. The pair presented the latest episode of the much-loved programme and spoke about a range of different newsworthy topics and even some famous faces. After an advert break towards the end of the show, Alison, 50, and Paddy, 51, returned live from the studio to talk about what was left to enjoy. Giggling away to herself, Alison said to viewers: 'Welcome back!' Paddy couldn't contain his laughter and chimed in: 'We've got spuds waiting for us in the kitchen...' He then pointed at Alison and said: 'I've got to say, Alison just sprayed her face with something over there that's full of glitter. She didn't realise. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Can you see it?' Alison confessed: 'I thought it was setting spray! I looked over there, I thought it was setting spray so I thought I'd setting spray myself. 'It's actually glitter!' Paddy said: 'Oh brilliant. I love that!' Alison started to pat her hair down and said: 'I sprayed myself with glitter! I'm so sorry.' Paddy then changed the subject and said: 'We've got spuds waiting for us in the kitchen with Claudia next. 'But first, it's time to find out what those Loose Women are cooking up this lunch time...' Anchor Kaye Adams, 62, replied: 'Hi Paddy! I love the look, Alison. It suits you.' Despite the huge mishap, many watching at home rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share how much they loved her new look. One person joked: 'Alison looks like a glittery Christmas card character now #ThisMorning.' 'Just wanted to let you know that your hair was extremely sparkly, I could see it from my big TV! You looked beautiful. #ThisMorning #AlisonHammond.' 'Glitterspray? Are we going back to the 80's??' Earlier on in the episode Paddy opened up about a terrifying health scare that saw him rushed to hospital as a teenager. Alison started the conversation by saying that research has highlighted that doctors should trust parents' gut instinct about their children's health. This led them all to share their own stories and views on the matter. Paddy, who has presented the show three times this week while Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard are on half-term, said: 'I don't want to throw shade on doctors and nurses, because they do an amazing job... Many rushed to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their love over Alison's amazing look on the show 'A very similar thing, when I was about 17 I keeled over in agony, I didn't know what it was. 'I had really bad stomach pains. The doctor came to our house, he said: "Just give him these tablets" and left.' Paddy's dad decided to take matters into his own hands and took him to seek medical help because he knew his son wasn't well. He continued: 'It was my dad who went "somethings not right". 'Took me to hospital... Within two hours, I was being operated on, I had a burst ulcer!' Paddy also joked 'where do I sign up?' in a cheeky interview with two Mormon Wives stars as they told him all about the cast's swingers lifestyle. Alison and Paddy chatted to two stars from The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives - Whitney Leavitt and Jessi Ngatikaura. The American Disney+ reality show, the second series of which came out earlier this month, follows a group of Utah-based Mormon mothers and TikTok influencers. The programme captured attention after cast member, Taylor Frankie Paul, went viral for admitting her husband and she had been swinging with other Mormon couples. But Paddy, who split from his wife and mother of his three children Christine in 2022 after 11 years of marriage, didn't appear dissuaded as he joked about joining the show and becoming a Mormon husband. Seemingly referring to the so-called 'soft-swinging' scandal - with the term denoting romantic and sexual intimacy outside a partnership, without full intercourse - Paddy joked: 'Where do I sign up? I'm in!' As he thanked the guests for coming on the show, he then did a double fist pump. During the interview, Alison made it clear that Whitney and Jessi no not participate in the swinging lifestyle, clarifying: 'Let's be clear, Whitney and Jessi did not "soft swing".' Paddy then cheekily interjected, referring to other cast members who are swingers as he quipped: 'Doesn't make them bad people.'

Loose Women star lands massive new gig just days after ITV daytime telly bloodbath

A Loose Women star has landed a massive new gig just days after ITV announced massive cuts to its daytime television schedule. Hosts of the female-led lunchtime chat show will see major cuts to their airtime from January in a desperate bid by the broadcaster to save cash. The huge programming changes announced earlier this month will see the talk show air for only 30 weeks a year, instead of its current year-round timetable. Lorraine Kelly 's self-titled chat show has also been subjected to the same cuts - along with a slash in run time, from an hour to 30 minutes. It makes it a good time for Loose Women host Judi Love, 44, to have branched out - by starting a podcast called Our Table, with the first episode released on Friday. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. It makes it a good time for host Judi Love, 44, to have branched out - by starting a podcast called Our Table (pictured), with the first episode released on Friday The talk-show style format will see her invite creatives from across the world to join her for a fine dining Caribbean meal - and tell-all chats about their rise to stardom. Guests on the first episode will include fellow Loose Woman Charlene White and The Diplomat actor David Gyasi. They will also be joined by comedian Michelle de Swarte, who created and starred in BBC series Spent, and actress Deborah Ayorinde, known for Amazon Prime horror series Them. The food will be provided by renowned chef Dominic Taylor, known for starring on Channel 4's Five Star Kitchen: Britain's Next Great Chef in 2023. The comedian announced her new gig in a series of Instagram posts earlier this week, one of which read: 'Our Table will launch on Friday the 30th on YouTube and all major podcast platforms! 'We have an exciting series lined up, featuring incredible guests and engaging conservations. Join us at Our Table!' Another of her posts showed a glamorous group shot of the stars due to feature on the first episode. It comes after Loose Women was left in chaos, with some of its top presenters doing the show 'through gritted teeth' as they faced a 60 per cent pay cut. The huge ITV programming changes announced earlier this month will see Loose Women air for only 30 weeks a year, instead of its current year-round timetable Some of the stars are believed to be 'furious' and 'insulted' over the shake-up, and are already fearing inevitable job losses. A source told The Sun: 'It's very tense backstage as the cast are all fuming. It's like they're putting on a brave face and doing the show through gritted teeth. 'Some people's pay could be cut by 60 per cent as some get paid by the episode and they'll be slashed next year. 'For some it's their main source of income and it's worrying to everyone.' Anchors Ruth Langsford and Kaye Adams, both 65, and presenters Nadia Sawalha, 60, and Denise Welch, 66, are believed to be 'angered' and 'panicked' about their livelihoods being at stake, causing uproar behind the scenes. Other top ITV talents including Lorraine, 65, whose career spans over 40 years, are believed to be 'furious' and 'insulted' over the shake-up. The new regime, set to come into effect in January, will cost a potential 300 staff members their jobs, with an ongoing consultation period lasting until September, before employees are finally let go in December. Insiders have revealed to MailOnline it is Christine Lampard, 46, who fears she will be most affected given she presents for Lorraine when she is on holiday and also anchors Loose Women, meaning her yearly work is now in jeopardy. A TV source told MailOnline: 'All of the presenters are in a state of panic and up in arms following ITV's announcement. 'These shows make up a large part of their livelihoods, so they are just as stressed and angry as the production staff, who have been told over 300 jobs are at risk. 'Ruth, Kaye, Nadia and Denise, in particular, have been reaching out to the production team in a panic and to express how angry they are that ITV had made this decision.' MailOnline understands the cast of Loose Women, which includes more than 20 presenters like Charlene White and Coleen Nolan, feel there will be no option other than for the broadcaster to let go of key, long-serving talent. It is also believed younger panellists, like former Love Island contestant Olivia Attwood, 34, and influencer GK Barry, 25, could be favoured over veteran stars including Janet Street-Porter, 78, and Jane Moore, 63. A Loose Women insider added: 'At the moment there are about 20 presenters at the show, some are contracted, like Ruth, Kaye, Nadia, Denise, Janet, and Jane, and others are more ad hoc, like Myleene Klass and Sue Cleaver. 'It is hard enough right now to give every contributor a fair number of shows and to keep everyone happy and on screen as much as they would like. 'Now, the show will air just 30 weeks a year, so a lot of people are going to lose their jobs. 'There won't be enough shows to go around, so it means presenters who have been on the series for 25 years may be kicked off the panel.'
