Son Heung-min draws penalty for LAFC in MLS debut
Son Heung-min marked his Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) debut with a strong performance as a second-half substitute in an away match, drawing a key penalty that led to his team's equalizer. Son came off the bench in the 61st minute to replace David Martinez for his first Major League Soccer (MLS) match against Chicago Fire FC at SeatGeek Stadium Bridgeview, Illinois, on Saturday (local time), as LAFC fought back for a 2-2 draw. Some 10 minutes after firing a weak left-footed shot from outside the box in the 67th minute, Son made his presence felt, with LAFC trailing 2-1. He was sent on a counterbreak after Brian Gutierrez hit the left goal post at the other end, and was brought down by a hard challenge from Carlos Teran. Referee Ricardo Montero let the play continue first, but after a call down from the video assistant referee, Montero reviewed the play and awarded LAFC a penalty. Denis Bouanga converted the ensuing spot kick to level the score. Son had a right-footed shot blocked by Chicago's Jonathan Dean during stoppage time as the teams ended in a stalemate. Son said afterward he was "a bit disappointed" with not coming away with a victory but he felt everyone "put in a lot of effort." "Happy I made my debut and I hope the goals come soon," he said. "It was a decent 30 minutes in my legs, so getting ready for next week. We'll see how I progress with the training sessions and with the players and we'll see if next week I can start the game and make a big impact." LAFC will next play New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, at 7:30 p.m. Saturday (local time), or 8:30 a.m. Sunday in South Korea. Son was unveiled as the newest member of LAFC on Wednesday, after ending his 10-year tenure with Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League. The 33-year-old was greeted by South Korean fans waving their national flags and also several Tottenham fans in Son's old Spurs shirt. (Yonhap)

LAFC announces Son Heung-min's arrival, former Tottenham star meets LA. See the photos
LOS ANGELES — Los Angeles Football Club officially unveiled Son Heung-min, their reportedly record-breaking signing, at a press conference at BMO Stadium on Wednesday, Aug. 6. "I'm here to win, I will perform. I will definitely show you something exciting," Son said. Son, 33, is considered to be arguably the greatest Asian soccer player ever, having appeared for South Korea 134 times (scoring 51 goals). In a decade with Tottenham, Son scored 173 goals and added 101 assists, captaining the London-based club to its first trophy in 17 years as Spurs won the 2024-25 Europa League final in May. Son is one of the highest profile signings in the club's – and arguably league – history following the footsteps of Carlos Vela, Gareth Bale and Olivier Giroux into the Hollywood spotlight. The event drew city dignitaries, including Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and Councilwoman Heather Hutt – who made an awkward ask of Son to bring the U.S. a victory in the 2026 World Cup. The former Tottenham star will continue to play South Korea in international competition. Here's a look at Son Heung-min's announcement press conference. California dreaming: Son Heung-min wants to go down as legend for LAFC
Having just completed a decadelong career in England as a veritable legend for his former club, South Korean football star Son Heung-min says he now wants to go down as a legend for his new club too. Son was unveiled as the newest member of Los Angeles Football Club in Los Angeles on Wednesday. The Major League Soccer club said they had acquired Sonny, as he is widely known, on a permanent transfer from Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League through 2027 with an option for 2028 and an additional option through June 2029. Son ended his 10-year Spurs tenure as the fifth-best scorer in club history with 173 goals in 454 matches in all competitions. He won the Premier League Golden Boot as its top goal scorer for the 2021-2022 season, and only three months ago, he captained Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League title and ended the North London club's 17-year trophy drought. Now 33, Son said he will embrace new challenges that lie ahead. "There is no guarantee that I will play well here, just because I had success in Europe. I am getting a fresh start, and my dream is to finish my time here as a legend," Son said at his introductory press conference at BMO Stadium. "Many people in the ownership group put in so much work to bring me here. I always want to give back what I receive, and that's just the way I've lived my life. When the time comes to leave the club, I want to be called a legend on my way out." Son revealed that LAFC "was not my first choice" as his next destination after his 2024-2025 Premier League season ended, with his status for the next season -- the final one of his contract -- in doubt. But a conversation with John Thorrington, LAFC's co-president and general manager, "changed my heart and my brain." With a massive Korean community in Los Angeles already welcoming him with open arms, Son said he wants to bring joy to his Korean fans. "Obviously, as a Korean athlete, I feel very fortunate to be able to have a career in a foreign country, and my objective is to make Korean fans here proud," Son said. "That was a major factor for me in choosing to come here." Son said he got an early glimpse of LAFC's passionate fan base when he attended the club's Leagues Cup match against Tigres UANL at BMO Stadium on Tuesday. Son drew a thunderous ovation when he was shown on the video board with the message "Welcome Son Heung-min" above the words "LAFC Forward." "Yesterday, I was at the game, watching you guys supporting (the team) like crazy. I just wanted to run onto the pitch and show my performance," Son said of his new team's supporters. "I'm here to win, and I will perform, and I will definitely show you some exciting football, and we definitely will have success. In football, you will have ups and downs, but for sure, I can guarantee that I will give everything when I wear this shirt, and I will make them proud." Though he struggled to recapture the magic from his Golden Boot season in the ensuing years, Son said he still has "good legs and good quality." "Obviously, I'm here to perform, but also, I want to give some advice to young players for their improvement," Son added. "I can't wait to see all the teammates." One of those teammates is former Tottenham goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris, who played with Son for nine seasons before joining LAFC in 2024. Son said conversations with the French keeper did play a role in his decision to come to Los Angeles but also cracked, "He's back to being my captain, so I have to say something good about him." The playing calendars in Europe and MLS are different. Tottenham just played a preseason match in Seoul on Sunday for Son's final match and will kick off their new season next week. The MLS regular season, though, kicked off in February. Son will have to jump onto a moving train, but he dispelled any concerns about his fitness. "I just had a good preseason, and I don't think people should worry about my physical condition," he said. "We have some paperwork to take care of. And I am here to play football, not do anything else. My goal is to put on a good show for our fans as soon as possible. I can't wait for the day when I get to meet them at our stadium." (Yonhap)

Thieves scaled fence, busted window before ransacking Brad Pitt's L.A. home, sources say
LOS ANGELES — Police are investigating a reported burglary at 'F1' actor Brad Pitt's home, two law enforcement sources familiar with the incident told NBC News on Thursday. Pitt was not home at the time, the sources said. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed a break-in at 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at a Los Feliz neighborhood residence but did not identify who lived there or who owned the home. Thieves ransacked the home and took an unknown amount of miscellaneous property, officials said. The value of the items was not immediately disclosed. Police were looking for three suspects who climbed over a front fence and broke in through the home's front window, the sources said. It's the latest in a wave of burglaries in recent years that have targeted high-end neighborhoods across L.A. and Southern California, where VIPs and celebrities have been victimized. On Valentine's Day, the L.A. home of actress Nicole Kidman and musician Keith Urban was burglarized. A week before that, the Southern California home of Los Angeles Football Club star forward Olivier Giroud, member of the French National Team that won the 2018 World Cup, was burglarized. In that case, thieves made off with what a source described as 'a significant amount' of jewelry and other items. Authorities have not said whether any of those crimes are connected to South American burglary crews that have been targeting high-end homes from coast to coast and have been a fixture in the L.A. area for more than a decade.

Owen Wilson Reveals the 2 Unique Careers His Younger Son Wants to Explore
During a Monday, June 2, appearance on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live,' Owen Wilson made some rare comments about parenthood The actor revealed that his younger son Finn is interested in being a DJ or opening a prank shop Wilson is dad to sons Ford, 14, and Finn, 11, and daughter Lyla, 6Owen Wilson's son has some interesting career goals. During a Monday, June 2, appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Wilson shared some rare insight into fatherhood. The 56-year-old actor is a dad to three kids: sons Ford, 14, and Finn, 11, and daughter Lyla, 6. In particular, he revealed two jobs that Finn has been considering for the future. "My youngest, first he wanted to be a DJ, and then he said he wanted to open a prank shop. He even had the name of the prank shop: Wilson's Wizzbangs. You know, he had the gun where you grab it and it could give you a little shock," Wilson shared. He continued, saying, "I think there's an age that kids go through where they're really... you know, they love the idea of doing a prank," he said, prompting host Jimmy Kimmel to declare that he "[hadn't] graduated from that stage." While on the show, Wilson also recalled attending a Los Angeles Football Club soccer game with his kids, where they met legendary soccer star Lionel Messi. "I am out of body. First of all, when he was leaving the field, it was like a John Hughes movie. Like Pretty in Pink. He looks over, and I'm like, 'Is he looking at me?! Is he looking at us?'" He continued, recalling, "Then he starts coming over, and the next thing there he was. And signed Ford's shirt." Wilson made it very clear that he was a fan, adding, "It's the most excited I've ever been to see someone." The actor's day was made even better when he got a hug from the professional athlete. In fact, he even used the opportunity to brag a bit about having a better experience with Messi than his kids did. "We were talking about that because the kids on the way home were like, 'Did you see he signed my shirt?' and 'He gave me a high five.' I was like, 'Guys, did you not see he hugged me?!' You know, classic middle child." Wilson's big takeaway from hugging Messi was about his skin: "The first thing I felt when I hugged him is like... His skin is really soft." "He's not just a great soccer player; he has beautiful skin," he added. While he and his sons have attended a few soccer games together, the actor has largely kept them out of the spotlight.
