BREAKING NEWS Bass guitarist for iconic punk band Comeback Kid dies after short health battle

Former Comeback Kid bassist Matt Keil has died after a year-long battle with the incurable degenerative neurological disorder, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Keil, 39, from Minnesota, played with the Canadian punk band from 2008 to 2004 and was featured on two of their albums, 'Symptoms + Cures' and 'Die Knowing.' The father-of-two was diagnosed with the devastating neurological disorder on May 2, 2024. ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, impacts the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control. It is a fatal disease with no known cure. Comeback Kid posted a heartfelt tribute to the former bassist on social media, confirming he passed away on Sunday. 'It's with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to our longtime friend and previous bass player Matt Keil,' the band said. 'He was such an amazing friend and musician. Just the greatest guy to tour with, be around, and explore the new countries in the world with. 'We are sending our love to his wife Maddie and his two daughters and want to honor his memory for our all years to come. We love you Matt K.' About half of ALS patients have a life expectancy of three years after the initial onset of symptoms, though some can survive for decades. The rare and incurable degenerative condition impairs the nervous system over time and causes the muscles to increasingly suffer from paralysis. After his diagnosis, Keil's loved ones launched a GoFundMe to support his wife Maddie and their two daughters, Ellie, 9, and Zoey, 7. 'You may know Matt Keil as a loving husband of 12 years to Maddie, or as a dedicated father,' the fundraiser said. 'You may also know him as a successful realtor, impassioned musician, and member of the Twin Cities community. However Matt has been a part of your life, you know that he is one of the kindest, most generous, hilarious, and genuine people. 'Matt would love nothing more than to live the rest of his years spending time with his family, traveling to the lake in Wisconsin, golfing, making music with friends, cheering on his daughters at soccer and gymnastics, or watching silly movies with the love of his life.' His wife released a heartbreaking tribute reflecting on their marriage after his passing. 'It is with a shattered heart that I share that the love of my life and my very best friend passed away yesterday afternoon after a 19-month-long battle with ALS,' she said. 'We shared a harmonious marriage filled with laughter and joy. He was an amazing parent, my own personal comedian, and the very best partner. I will miss you for the rest of my life. I love you forever.'

Famous drama actor battling ALS says he has lost use of his arm

Former 'Grey's Anatomy' star Eric Dane is dealing with some major side affects amid his ongoing battle with ALS. 'I have one functioning arm,' the 52-year-old said in an interview with Diane Sawyer that aired Monday on "Good Morning America." 'My right side [has] completely stopped working,' Dane said. While the actor still has mobility of his left arm, he added that he is slowly starting to lose function of it as well. 'It's going,' Dane said. 'I feel like maybe a couple, few more months and I won't have my left hand either.' The actor is walking fine right now, but is already thinking about how the disease will impact his legs. 'I wake up every day and I'm immediately reminded that this is happening,' he told Sawyer. 'It's not a dream.' ALS, otherwise referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, impacts the nervous system. The non-curable disease affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, eventually causing paralysis and restricting essential bodily functions such as speaking, eating and breathing, according to the Mayo Clinic. The CDC estimates roughly 33,000 people are fighting ALS in the U.S. Dane called his battle with ALS 'sobering.' His journey started when he first started experiencing weakness in his right hand more than a year ago. The actor didn't think much of it at first, until it worsened over the course of a few weeks. Dane then went from hand specialist to hand specialist, then neurologist to neurologist. After nine months of being in the dark, Dane was finally diagnosed with ALS in April. The actor, who shares two teenager daughters with actress Rebecca Gayhart, said he is focused on his family and work. 'All I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can,' Dane said. 'I don't think this is the end of my story. I just don't feel like, in my heart, I don't feel like this is the end of me.' Dane appeared in television programs in the 1990s and 2000s, including ' Children,' 'Roseanne' and 'Charmed.' He rose to fame when he was cast as Dr. Mark Sloan (a.k.a Dr. McSteamy) on 'Grey's Anatomy' in 2006. The actor stayed on the show until 2012, appearing in more than 130 episodes and receiving several accolades. Dane landed his first leading film in role in the 2006 German-made feature, 'Open Water 2: Adrift.' He was also a co-star in 'Marley & Me' (2008) and 'Valentine's Day' (2010) as well as appeared in 'X-Men: The Last Stand.' The actor has most recently appeared as Captain Tom Chandler in 'The Last Ship' and as Cal Jacobs in HBO's 'Euphoria.' 'And then I realized in that moment I'm not safe in the water anymore,' he said. 'She dragged me back in the boat,' Eric said of his daughter who saved his life and pulled him out of the ocean. Diane asked him about the aftermath of the incident: 'What did you say to each other?' 'I was like breaking down in tears, so I made sure she got back in the water with her friend and continued on with the snorkeling with the guide. But I was just heartbroken,' he said. Eric Dane shares update on his ALS diagnosis

Actor Eric Dane is opening up about living with ALS. In his first television interview since revealing he has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, Dane, 52, recalled the symptoms that led to discovering his diagnosis about a year and a half ago. 'I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand,' Dane told 'Good Morning America.' 'I didn't really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I had been texting too much or my hand was fatigued. A few weeks later I noticed it had gotten a little worse, so I went and saw a hand specialist who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist who sent me to another neurologist who said this is way above my pay grade.' ALS progressively affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that make the muscles of both the upper and lower body work, according to the ALS Association, a non-profit organization which works to research the disease and offer resources to people living with it. There is currently no known cure. 'I will never forget those three letters. It's on me the second I wake up,' Dane told ABC. Dane said his right arm and hand have 'completely stopped working.' 'I feel like maybe a couple, few more months, and I won't have my left hand [functioning] either,' Dane said, adding that he's worried about the eventual loss of his leg mobility he described as 'sobering.' Dane rose to fame as the handsome Dr. Mark 'McSteamy' Sloan on 'Grey's Anatomy' from 2006 - 2012. His credits also include film roles in movies like 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die.' More recently, Dane plays Cal Jacobs, the troubled father to Jacob Elordi's character in the HBO drama 'Euphoria.' Dane shares two teen daughters with actress Rebecca Gayheart. They married in 2004 and though they separated for a time remain close. 'I talk to her every day,' Dane said of Gayheart. 'We have managed to become better friends and better parents. And she is … probably my biggest champion and my most stalwart supporter. And I lean on her.' He said he is focused on his family and continuing to work as long as he can. 'At the end of the day, just, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can,' he said, later adding, 'I don't think this is the end of my story. I just don't feel like, in my heart, I don't feel like this is the end of me.*
