Aamir Khan Says He 'Discouraged' Junaid Khan From Learning Acting: 'Want Him To Be...'
Last Updated: Aamir Khan addressed the backlash received by Junaid Khan in Loveyapa. Junaid Khan, son of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, made his theatrical debut with the romantic comedy Loveyapa, co-starring Khushi Kapoor. Directed by Advait Chandan, the film was marketed as a Gen Z love story, promising a fresh take on modern relationships. However, upon its release in February 2025, Loveyapa faced significant backlash, primarily due to its perceived lack of originality and the ongoing nepotism debate in the industry. In a recent chat, Aamir Khan addressed this backlash and revealed he had advised Junaid not to formally learn acting. Aamir Khan told Raj Shamani, 'When Loveyapa released, I really liked the film and thought Junaid had done a good job. The role he played was quite different from his real personality. Junaid has this quality — he transforms into the character. I think uss film ko bohot negative backlash aaya. It was heavily trolled, nepotism mein bohot chali gayi ki yeh nepo kids hai (I think the film received a lot of negative backlash. It was heavily trolled and got dragged into the nepotism debate, labelled as a 'nepo kid' film)." The actor added, 'But Junaid and I are not like that. Until now, I've not interfered in his career, nor do I want to. In fact, I discouraged him from formally learning acting." Aamir also mentioned that he is now more focused on Junaid's success. 'I want him to succeed, to be happy, and to get the recognition he deserves for the work he's doing. As a father, that's a very strong emotion," he said. Loveyapa's promotional material, including its title track 'Loveyapa Ho Gaya," received widespread criticism for its outdated visuals and awkward choreography. Social media users described the song as 'cringe" and 'painful to watch," with some questioning the authenticity of the performance. Loveyapa also faced criticism for its perceived lack of originality, being a remake of the 2022 Tamil film Love Today. This led to discussions about the industry's reliance on remakes and the challenges faced by newcomers attempting to establish their own identities amidst the nepotism debate. After Maharaj and Loveyapa, Junaid Khan will not star in Ek Din. The upcoming film is backed by Aamir Khan and also stars Sai Pallavi. First Published:

Aamir Khan blames nepotism debate for son Junaid Khan's Loveyapa box office failure: ‘Bhut negative backlash aaya'
Aamir Khan's son Junaid Khan made his acting debut with the Netflix film Maharaj, earning praise from both critics and audiences. However, his theatrical debut, Loveyapa, failed to perform at the box office. In a recent interview with Raj Shamani, Aamir blamed the nepotism debate for Loveyapa's failure. (Also Read: Aamir Khan feels bad Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Hrithik Roshan don't get as much credit as him, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman) When asked what affected him more, his own films failing or Junaid's, Aamir said, 'I always felt that I was deeply attached to my work, almost obsessively, and what happened to my projects really mattered to me. But when Junaid entered the industry, I realised that a father's emotions take over. These days, I'm more concerned about Junaid's work. I want him to succeed, to be happy, and to get the recognition he deserves for the work he's doing. As a father, that's a very strong emotion.' He then went on to discuss Loveyapa's failure, saying, "When Loveyapa released, I really liked the film and thought Junaid had done a good job. The role he played was quite different from his real personality. Junaid has this quality — he transforms into the character. I think uss film ko bhut negative backlash aaya. It was heavily trolled, nepotism mein bhut chali gayi ki yeh nepo kids hai (I think the film received a lot of negative backlash. In fact, I discouraged him from formally learning acting." Directed by Advait Chandan, Loveyapa is a remake of the 2022 Tamil film Love Today. The romantic drama stars Junaid Khan and Khushi Kapoor in the lead roles and tells the story of a young couple forced to swap phones before marriage. The film earned only ₹8.85 crore worldwide at the box office but found some appreciation after its OTT release. It is currently streaming on JioHotstar. Aamir will next be seen in Sitaare Zameen Par, a spiritual sequel to his 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par. The film also stars Genelia D'Souza in the lead role and is scheduled for release in cinemas on 20 June.

Now, there's a lot of confusion about what the audience wants: Aari
Aari is currently playing the lead in 4th Floor , directed by LR Sundarapandi, an assistant of Hari. Actor Aari Arujunan says he finds a deep sense of fulfillment in balancing the demands of film shoots and hosting a TV show. In a conversation with us, Aari opens up about his upcoming action-thriller 4th Floor , how he manages his dual roles in cinema and television, the comparisons between his show, Vaa Thamizha Vaa , and Neeya Naana , and on the recent success of low budget films over high-budget productions... 'TODAY, MARKETING A FILM WELL IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS MAKING A GOOD FILM' Reflecting on the current trends in the film industry, Aari says he's inspired by the growing success of low-budget films at the box office. 'Films like Lubber Pandhu and Love Today are great examples of low-budget movies that have done really well at the box office. They may not be ₹100 crore projects, but they've made a big impact,' he says and adds, 'The film industry is going through a phase of change. There's a lot of confusion about what the audience really wants, which makes it hard for producers and actors to choose the right scripts. Promotion has also become a big challenge. Today, marketing a film well is just as important as making a good film. Even getting media attention is harder now, as many promotions are paid. Speaking about the project, he says, ' 4th Floor revolves around the blurred line between dreams and reality. The protagonist faces a psychological dilemma — he's unsure if the problems he faces are the result of a dream or just illusions. After moving to the fourth floor, a series of strange dreams and issues unfold, forming the crux of the story. It is an action-thriller with emotional and psychological elements.' 'HOSTING A TALK SHOW GIVES ME A SENSE OF FULFILLMENT' Aari admits that he was initially hesitant about managing both TV and cinema. 'I have two shoot schedules per month for the show, and I plan my film work accordingly around that,' he shares. 'Each episode gives me the opportunity to interact with around 50 individuals, where I can engage with people from diverse backgrounds. That gives me a deep sense of fulfillment. Witnessing the positive impact of the show on people's lives brings me joy,' he adds. 'I HAVE IMMENSE RESPECT FOR GOBINATH SIR' Addressing the comparisons between the show and Neeya Naana , Aari says, ' Neeya Naana 's contribution to fostering diverse discussions is truly commendable. I have immense respect for Gobinath sir. Hosting a show consistently for over 15 years is no small feat. I cannot replicate what he does. The real question I ask myself is: what kind of identity am I building for myself? This isn't about competition — it's about crafting a meaningful show that resonates with people and offers thoughtful solutions.' The actor feels that talk shows serve as important platforms for public dialogue. He elaborates, 'In a densely populated state like ours, such avenues are essential for sharing varied perspectives. Even if there are thematic similarities between the shows, there is always something meaningful to take away from each. Over the years, people have identified me through many roles — initially as an artiste, then as Bigg Boss Aari, and now, as Vaa Thamizha Vaa Aari. These titles were bestowed upon me by the audience, so I wear them with pride.' On his upcoming projects... Talking about his upcoming releases, Aari shares, 'My next film is with Hansika. The shooting is complete, and post-production is currently in progress. I'm also working on Goli Soda 3 with Bharath and Paal Dabba . It's a multi-starrer featuring Telugu actor Suniel along with several other Telugu stars.' Addressing the delay in some of his projects, he explains, ' Bagavan is a mythological period film. We've completed a few portions, but we need more time to work on the CG. As for Aleka , the film is complete, and ready for release.'
